How Did Mercantilism Establish Its Colonies

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the British government was in control of the North American colonies. The prime reason for the British government to control the English colonies was so Britain could trade with the colonies. The English colonies had crops like sugar and tobacco that couldn’t be grown in England so the British relied on the colonies to ship these products to them. The colonies were able to use the British ships in trade for the colonies’ crops. With the policy of mercantilism developing in the 17th century, Britain said they could help the English colonies become a strong country by trading, even though the trading mostly helped the British.

Jamestown. Jamestown was the first established colony by England, after one of there earlier colony disappeared. The voyage from England to Jamestown was very long and rough the 3 ships carried 144 men and boys who would become the first settlers. The ship crashed and luckily they swam ashore alive, but because of their unawareness Indians attacked them, although they fought them off, there was a big insecurity among them.

There are many reasons why England’s colonies were found but I believe the colonies were founded because of different religious beliefs, lack of resources, and just expanding rule not only in England but in another territory. The first settlers from England left their homeland because of their different views on religion, so rather than being tried for different crimes in England they came to North America. America was also full of resources that England didn’t have due to the climate. These resources made thee English government to expand the country’s rule in other territories, so the country’s journeyman settled in different colonies along the eastern seaboard. In November 1620, the Pilgrims sailed to Plymouth Rock after a long three-week journey from England. Many left England for religious freedom, to colonize a new world, or to escape persecution (Queen). Over the course of time, the colonists moved the Indians out, formulated a government, and created commerce. On the other side of the Atlantic, King Charles II was allowed to regain the throne of England. Within three weeks the colonists felt effects of tyranny (Jaycox).

In the early 1500s, European countries began attempts to expand into the new world, but many of the early settlements failed. The first two colonies to have been successfully established were from England; they were Jamestown, the first inaugurated colony, and Plymouth, the second colony founded by Pilgrims who were searching for religious freedom. There were many ways in which the settlements differed, but the also shared various commonalities that (may have) led to their colonial successes. The settlers of Jamestown and Plymouth were different, having their own ways and ideas as to how they would, together, grow and thrive.

Early Colonies the Models The colonization of America began with a series of attempts by the English to establish a colony in the New World which would serve to compete with the successful Spanish colonies in the south. In 1584, Queen Elizabeth the first charged Walter Raleigh with finding a suitable place that would fulfill these conditions. In turn, Walter Raleigh sent a voyage consisting of Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe across the Atlantic in 1584. The voyage resulted in the claiming of North Carolina in July later that year.

As colonies were being founded in the early 1600's, religion was a key factor in determining laws. Massachusetts was established in 1620 by Pilgrims. These Pilgrims had fled England to avoid religious persecution. However, The New World was not their first stop. The Pilgrims originally traveled to New Amsterdam, where they were tolerated.

The colonies were established for various reasons, including religious freedom, economic opportunities, and political freedom. The colonies were expected to provide raw materials for England's industries, and in return, England provided them with protection and a market for their goods. Initially, England tried to control the colonies by establishing strict laws and regulations, but this approach proved difficult to enforce due to the distance between England and the colonies. In the early eighteenth century, England adopted a policy of salutary neglect.

Even though most colonies were founded by fellow Englishmen, there were two regions that evolved into two distinct societies.

In the 17th century England, sent ships to North America to try and colonize North America. There were three regions of colonies set up in the England colonies. There were the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies. Each region was different in many ways. Settlers brought their values with them, and their personal reasons for coming over to North America.

This actually benefitted the colonies because it caused the English to subsidize American assets. Although some aspects of mercantilism hurt the colonists, they found loopholes in the system so it didn’t have as bad an impact which helped improve the economy in the

New England was a colony that was settled because the people that came from England wanted to find their freedom from their country. The people that came to the United States was to find freedom through religion, which the people from Mother England were not given the freedom to pursue their religious believes. The first settlement in New England was when John Winthrop came to the United States. In this settlement came the founders of the colony of New England. Basically the people from the first settlement were the ones that set up the way that the people were going to live and the type of government that they were going to establish and follow.

The colony of Roanoke consisted about one hundred and seven people. The Roanoke colony also known as the lost colony was established on Roanoke island which today is now known as North Carolina. In 1585 the english colony of Roanoke was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1584 Sir Walter Raleigh had been granted a royal decree by Queen Elizabeth the first to colonize North America.

Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the monarchy began to expand their power and influence, eventually becoming absolute rulers. Having support from the merchant class, the monarchy attempted to unify and stabilize the nation states. In the late seventeenth, early eighteenth centuries, with hopes of expanding English trade and acquiring a broader market for English manufactured goods, the nation states were wealthy enough to fund voyages of discovery and exploration. Over time, ten colonies were established along the Atlantic coast of North America. The first permanent English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and in 1620 a ship landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, marking it as the second permanent English settlement.

‘New money’ would allow upward social mobility. Also, there was lots of land that could be acquired, and that allowed for economic growth. Mercantilism was a way that the British kept economic control of the colonies. This way, the colonies would make money for Britain. The navigation acts and the sugar act were both laws enacted to restrict trade in the colonies.
