The Lost Colony Of Roanoke Colony

The Lost Ranoke Colony was an expedition by the English Government in 1587 in their first attempt the colonize North America. England had sent two previous expeditions to this area, both military in nature which where both run out of America by hostile Indians. The third expedition consisted of 90 men, 17 women, and 11 children who settled what is known as Ranoke Island. With supplies running low the Governor of Ranoke, John White left for England to retrieve supplies. Upon his return two years later, he found the colony had simply disappeared, no sign off the fort or homes that had stood before his departure.

In this set of materials, the author and the professor discuss the theory of the missing colonists of the Roanoke Island . The author states that the colonists moved to another island called Croatan, whereas the professor claims that this theory is not the most credible one. First, the author alleges that the missing colonists traveled to a neighboring island of Croatan. However, the professor argues that there is only one route to arrive to that place, and as there is no evidence that the colonists used that way, it is possible they decided to go to other location.

The lost colony of Roanoke It all started on August 9th 1590 when the English started to explore the island of Roanoke. Not sure what they were going to find or even have a clue of what they were going to find however they started there journey anyways. The natives were extremely friendly the English men.

Well many colonists died because of their water supply, their relationship with the natives, and because of their knowledge of survival. These factor lead to early death for most of the colonist. The water supply for Jamestown was brackish, or filthy, and lead to disease.

Before he left, John White, the former governor of the Roanoke Colony, had instructed the colonists to carve a Maltese Cross into a nearby tree if they were forced to leave. When he returned, there was no sight of a cross, just the words ‘CRO’ carved into a nearby tree as well as “CROATOAN” carved into the gatepost of one of the forts. This lead White and his team to believe that they had moved to Croatoan Island, present day Hatteras Island, with no sign of force.

What happened to the Lost Colony? There are many different theories and opinions on what really happened to the lost colony of Roanoke. Some are backed up by facts and science and others are total hoaxes. My opinion based on the documents, is that the colonists ran out of supplies, tried to leave the area for Croatoan, and sunk at sea because they couldn't build sufficient boats.

When the fleet left, it took a little over one month to leave spain, and actually set out to go to America. When they got there, they realized how hard it was going to be to survive, as the Indians started attacking. Eventually, they built a wall around their little settlement so that the indians couldn’t attack them. John Smith became the leader of the colony, and took a big gamble. He invited the Indians to trade with them.

When the men sailed back to Roanoke from the war they realized everything was once again gone, their families along with their belongings were no longer there. After the second failure Roanoke was nicknamed the lost colony, even though it was a settlement and not a colony. The second failure is unknown and has been a mystery that is yet to be discovered. There are conspiracy theories that are told about what caused Roanoke to fail.
