How Does Gun Control Affect Society

I. Introduction The Constitution's second amendment says, "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (Madison, 1971, para. 2). The second amendment was written as a part of the Bill of Rights and gave the citizens the right to bear arms and form militias to maintain a free state. However, since its adoption, the interpretation of the Second Amendment has been a topic of debate and controversy. Some people argue that the Second Amendment assures a person's right to own firearms for personal protection.

A decrease in incidence of gun-related violence has also decreased in the US during the time when the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was in effect. There are two arguments dominating the gun control issue. The anti-gun control people believes that the problem is with the people not with the guns and imposing heavier sanctions, harsher punishments on criminals, and more armed guards should solve the problem of gun violence. On the other hand, the pro-gun control people argues that the easy accessibility of firearms directly correlates gun-related violence and mass shooting (Lemieux, 2014). Gun control has been a big factor in today’s society, now days it is often to see people getting their lives taken from them due to guns. Having researched one side of the issue, that gun violence had increased over the last year. Having researched the other side of the issue, more gun owners are feeling their rights are being taken little by little. There is no question this is a complicated issue that will require a complicated answer.

Imagine enjoying a nice party at your local cabana, only for you to hear a loud bang, and look over to see your friend lying on the ground, dead. This problem you are facing is known as gun control, and is a issue that has faced the U.S for many years. gun control is the debate on whether or not laws around guns should be tightened or not. Today, I will prove to you what gun control is, who is affected by it, and what we can do to solve it. Gun control is a problem that tends to occur very often in the past few years, and is affecting the U.S very badly.

However, when gun control laws are implemented, it is proven that crime rates will not decrease. In 1999, 6.3 million violent crimes were committed in the U.S. (Laws.com) These violent crimes include rape, sexual assault, robbery, and assault. It was shown that only 8% of these crimes involved usage of a firearm. In the early 1970’s, around 19% of murders involved guns. When gun control laws were implemented, the rate raised to about 50%.

Although firearms are still highly debated as dangerous or, it has been proved many times that because of guns, the number of crimes have been reduced; plus having these firearms create a sense of safety and

In 2014, the CDC reported that 11,008 of the 15,872 homicides committed in the United States that year involved a firearm. Of the 42,826 suicides reported that year, 21,386 involved a firearm. These statistics have inspired efforts at the federal and state levels to enact gun control legislation to reduce crime and violence’’(‘’Gun Control’’). According to the statistic guns are held for over 33,000 deaths in the United States.

Lastly,gun are rarely used for self defense in a dangerous situation. Out of the 29,618,300 violent crimes that were committed between 2007 and 2011,only 235,7000 victims protected themselves with a gun. Between 2007 and 2011,84,495,500 property crimes that were committed only 103,000 people protected themselves with a gun. Thus,it is obvious that guns are unnecessary since they increase the number of crimes committed each year in America because even criminals own guns legally. According to the theguardian.com,in 2011,12,664 murders committed in the U.S.Out of 12,664,8,583 murders were committed by guns.

Gun Control Gun control over the years has been a controversial subject, with people arguing for both sides. The 2nd amendment states that everyone in the U.S. has a right to bear arms. Mass shootings and suicides by firearm have been a growing concern for many people living in the U.S. Numerous people making the argument that there should be more gun control. Having gun control would help lessen the deaths by firearms in the country for a variety of reasons.

One of the most controversial issues our nation faces today is gun control laws. On the other hand, we have does that believe that more controls laws should be implemented since the 2nd amendment was for the right of States to have an armed militia during wartime. Both sides have strong point, however, the safety of our children comes first, and a firearm means death in the wrong hands.

There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.

Gun Control in America Gun control in America is a highly debated subject. James Wilson speaks against gun control in his article “Gun Control Isn’t the Answer”. Gun laws need to be more restricted. Gun control reform is needed to safeguard children and prevent access to those with mental illness and a criminal background. Wilson talks about the shooting at Virginia Tech using it as a platform to talk about people not weapons being responsible for the tragedy.

Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.

The number of incidents of gun violence last year in the United States was about 60,000. In recent years, the number of mass shooting has risen to about one mass shooting per day in the United States. The country is divided with some wanting to reevaluate our gun control laws and either ban or add additional regulations to the purchase of guns. Others say it is our right for Americans to own guns and something the founding fathers considered important to put in the Bill of Rights. The number of firearm sales has risen with the number of mass shooting many Americans question if banning guns or certain guns could help decrease the number of gun violence deaths.

Generally, there are two attitudes towards the gun control in the United States. On the one hand, some people firmly urge the government to restrict the gun ownership and gun rights, in order to avoid gun violence. On the other hand, plenty of people still want to protect their rights of owning guns. As far as I am concerned, there is no doubt that the United States should put more restriction on gun ownership and use.
