Shakespeare, the great playwright, has done many things to help him stand out, writing many plays, always keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. This suspense stands out in his play Romeo and Juliet, where he makes suspense through the recurring dramatic irony of Romeo’s and Juliet’s death and the audience wanting to know what’s next. Early on, the audience is clued in on Romeo’s death at many different points in the play. The talk of Romeo’s death is highlighted even in simple talk with Benvolio: “Of despisèd life closed in my breast / By some vile forfeit of an untimely death” (Shakespeare 1.4.117-118). This foreshadows the early death of Romeo, and it keeps the suspense because the audience already knows Romeo will die, but not when. This means that when the idea of death is brought up, it alerts them and keeps them on their toes. Later on, when Romeo and Juliet are together Juliet compares Romeo, who’s below her, to someone who is “one dead in the bottom of a tomb” (Shakespeare 3.5.56). This indicates to the audience that Romeo will die as one instead of with Juliet, catching the audience off guard …show more content…
This is first shown when Juliet is pondering whether or not to take the poison, she speaks to herself, grabbing her knife, “What if this mixture do not work at all? / Shall I be married then tomorrow morning?”(Shakespeare 4.3.21-22). The audience here knows that Juliet will die, but they still don’t know how. This makes them wonder if Juliet stabbing herself is the way she does it and makes them curious for what happens next. At the end of the story, when Romeo visits Juliet in her tomb, he kills himself, thinking that Juliet is dead: “Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die” (Shakespeare 5.3.120). The audience knows that Juliet isn’t dead, and Romeo killing himself for it makes them think about how Juliet is going to react when she wakes
Shakespeare creates suspense within his audience, when Tybalt first sees Romeo at the dance. As well as he foreshadows the future, an example of this is when Romeo has second thoughts about the party, because he had a bad dream. He makes curiosity through adding puns that help create the tone of Romeo's heartbreak and sadness. Romeo talks about how he is sore, as he shuts off the world in his room, and he refers to cupid's arrow of love. After this he cannot soar, because of love's burden.
The last reason for Romeo and Juliet's death is their love for each other. Romeo had been banished from Verona and did not receive the letter about Juliet faking her death. Romeo and Balthasar are looking for Juliet in her tomb. Romeo sees Juliet's lifeless body. “Death that hath sucked the honey of thy breath”, (act 5 scene 3) Romeo can't live without his wife Juliet so he decides to drink poison.
Romeo says, “Well, Juliet I will lie with thee tonight”(5.1.34). Romeo is saying that he is going to be dead with Juliet and to lie with her instead of being without her. This shows foreshadowing because when Romeo goes to see Juliet in the grave, they both end up being together but are both dead in the
Just before Romeo dies from the quick work of the poison, Juliet awakes from her unconsciousness, an effect of the potion the Friar laid her under, and believes her plan had worked. But, as she watches Romeo closer, she realizes their plan has failed as he falls dead upon her. Juliet is shattered by her lover’s death, pinking up his dagger she stabs herself leaving them both dead, all because of the love they share for each
When Juliet saw Romeo, she immediately knew that he had killed himself with the poison so she kissed his lips right away in hope that she would die from the poison too. This failed so as a last resort she grabbed Romeo’s dagger and screamed with the last breath of life “O happy dagger, / This is thy sheath” and stabbed herself (Shakespeare 5.3.171). When Juliet woke from her long nap, she had seen Romeo’s dead body and was in shock to see that the love of her life was dead and lying right in front of her. As a response to his death, she knew that she could not spend the rest of her life without him so made the quick decision to kill herself.
As a result, she had to watch Romeo die right next to her. The production of Romeo and Juliet modernizes Juliet’s death by having her commit suicide with a gun. Moreover, this makes Juliet seem more impulsive because her immediate reaction after losing a loved one was to kill herself rather than grieve. Also, she tried to smack the poison out of Romeo’s hand, unaware of what was in the vial from gut
Acting choices can transform a scene from a delighted one to a miserable one if done correctly. Specifically, during the death scene, Juliet wakes up and brushes Romeo’s cheek right after he finishes the poison. This choice amplifies the impulsivity of Romeo’s decision to take his own life. If he had taken just a few more seconds to look at Juliet more carefully rather than basking in her beauty, he probably would have seen some subtle movements that would have proved she was awake. In the original script, Romeo talks about how he is preventing death from loving Juliet.
Romeo goes to Juliet's tomb when he thinks she is dead and he sees her lying there he thinks to himself she looks like she may still be alive but he know nothing so he sits there at Juliet's Deathbed and drinks poison he says “thy drugs are quick thus with a kiss I die”( 5.3 120). So before Romeo dies he gives Juliet a final goodbye kiss as a token of his love. the decision he made to die with Juliet shows the true love that they had for each other that they couldn't live without each other. Romeo says before he dies “for here lies Juliet and her beauty makes/ this Vault a feasting presence full of light/ death lie tho here by a dead man interred” 5.3 85-88 . He is saying here lies this beautiful woman who has died and I have nothing to do but to die with her.
Juliet was being set up to marry another, Count Paris. To avoid marrying Paris she plans with Friar Laurence to fake her death, but when Romeo hears of her death he is unaware of it being fake. In the pain of losing Juliet and not wanting to be apart, he goes to her tomb, drinks poison, and kills himself. When Juliet awakes to see Romeo’s dead body, she stabs herself with a dagger and dies. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, written
Just before he leaves, Juliet informs Romeo about a premonition in her dream, that she sees Romeo, dead at the bottom of a tomb. The quote, “As one dead in the bottom of a tomb” (III,v,56) once again foreshadows another scene that takes place in the final moments/final scene of the play where Romeo is actually dead at the bottom of the Capulet's tomb and Juliet stabbed herself with a dagger that Romeo brought with him. Not only that, Juliet explains as if that she was actually present in the dream and asks Romeo if it was just herself getting the dreams or if it was also Romeo who also got that dream, “Either my eyesight fails or thou lookest the pale” (III,v, 57). She questions herself if she, in reality, saw Romeo dead or if it was just a fragment of imagination. In Juliet’s dream, she doesn’t actually see Romeo killing himself but instead gets a quick glimpse of his face before the dream wafted away.
Romeo and Juliet Essay Why does death happen so much in Romeo and Juliet and how does it contribute to the story? Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean tragedy about two star-crossed lovers whose love leads to their death and the end of their family feud. The suicide of Romeo and Juliet and other deaths throughout the play symbolize death in this Shakespearean tragedy. Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other caused death to not only them but the people they loved. Death was a symbol of Romeo and Juliet because the deaths caused by the feud made it harder for Romeo and Juliet to be together, every death added to the overall mood of the tragedy, and the deaths of loved ones caused Romeo and Juliet to be foolish and make impulsive decisions.
Once Romeo hears of Juliet’s death and vows to join her in her grave. He goes out of his way to see an apothecary to sell him poison. He decides to go back to Verona and “lie with thee tonight”(Act V, scene i, line 34). After Romeo sees Juliet ‘dead’ he is so emotionally distraught and shaken that chooses to drink poison and kill himself and decides that “Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.
After Juliet executes her plan to pretend to kill herself because her parents arrange marriage with a gentleman named Paris, Romeo hears the news and travels to the tomb. He finds Juliet lying supposedly dead, and proceeds to drink a poison he purchased later on in the day out of sadness. This, however, leads Juliet to wake up and find the love of her life dead right beside her. She is overwhelmed with a wave of sadness and desperation. She even attempts to drink the poison that is left off of Romeo’s lips to kill herself.
