In the world today, morality is not black and white anymore, it has developed into a gray area in which can scarcely be defined. The dictionary definition of morality is stated as "the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct." Be that as it may, everyone has a contrasting opinion or view of right and wrong. This disagreement of opinion on what is moral causes controversy, such as the topic of abortion. Since abortion is simply put as the killing of an unborn child, why are women that kill their children convicted as murders when women who abort their children are not convicted as murderers? In fact, abortion is destroying the life of a child; therefore, it should be expressed as morally wrong, except when circumstances …show more content…
The reasoning of this belief is that the woman is who will have the responsibility of caring for that child and it is her body. The issue, however, with this reasoning is that it does not deal with the morality of the issue or take into consideration whether abortion is right or wrong. In Webster 's dictionary, abortion is defined as the "termination of a pregnancy often accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of an embryo or fetus." It is the killing of an unborn child. Even though morality is hard to describe, the bulk of society complies that murder is wrong; therefore, abortion should be expressed as immoral as well. In Carol Gilligan 's essay, "Concepts of Self and Morality," a college student answers the question of what morality should be by stating, "The basic idea that I cling to is the sanctity of human life" (171). When a woman decides to have an abortion, she overlooks the sanctity of human life and she forgets her morals. Therefore there should not be a question of choice in the matter of …show more content…
Janet Harris wrote in her piece, shared by Washington Post, that when she was faced with the decision to get an abortion “it wasn’t “Should I or shouldn’t I?” but “How quickly can I get this over with?””(Harris). Where have a woman 's values and morals gone if she can knowingly make the decision to kill a child that is a part of her own body? Statements like these are prime examples of why abortion shouldn’t just be an option women can chose whether or not to receive . Janet’s reasoning is that when it was time for her to make this “decision” in her life it “was in the mid-1980s, when abortion was about women having control not just over their bodies but over their destinies” (Harris). Never mind the morality of abortion, even the health risks are unbelievable. When a woman receives an abortion she runs a 65 percent higher risk of clinical depression and 160 percent more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric treatment. Abortions create more complications than going full term with a
When faced with an unintended pregnancy, women find themselves in complex and challenging circumstances. Some may lack the financial resources, emotional support, or stability necessary to provide a nurturing environment for a child. Surprisingly, around 45% of all abortions are unsafe, where 97% of them take place in developing countries.(WHO) By allowing legal access to abortion, women can make informed decisions about their reproductive health, taking into account their personal circumstances and overall well-being. Prohibiting abortion does not eliminate the need for it.
A fetus is also a life. All lives are equal and a fetus also has the right to live. It is inhumane to deprive a life’s basic rights. It is even immoral to kill animals that have human characteristics,
In “Roe v. Wade-- Abortion Won the Day, But Sooner or Later That Day Will End,” by Frederica Matthew-Green, the author describes how abortion is changing the way society values human life. The writer goes on to explain that at the time abortion was being legalized, they could not comprehend how high the rate of abortions would go up, from the perspective that it would be a last resort measure. She claims that once abortion is made an option, it then becomes the most convenient choice that could be made in that situation, rather than parenting or adoption. In the article, Frederica Matthew-Green goes on to refute the argument that life does not begin at conception, by describing how the zygote is formed. The writer made the connection between abortion and death very clear, saying, “How could I think it was wrong to execute homicidal criminals, wrong to shoot enemies in wartime, but all right to kill our own sons and daughters?”
This is because when a woman has a high risk pregnancy, having to carry a baby to full term and giving birth, can be detrimental to her body or even cause death. High risk pregnancy can imply so many different things, like being more prone to infections and miscarriages. If a woman has HIV, diabetes or high blood pressure, this can all complicate the pregnancy, making the woman more prone to miscarriages or complicated birth. Miscarriages are a common thing, but if the woman's body can handle it, it can cause serious internal issues or even death. So without having the resource of abortion for medical reasons, it could go as far as death for some women.
The Keynote Address: Untying the Moral Knot of Abortion, was given by Caitlin E. Borgmann at the Washington and Lee School of law on November 8, 2014. Borgmann’s main goal of her address was to bring back to attention that abortion should be seen as a woman’s own right in making decisions regarding her own body. She talks about how people have become so focused on the morality of the fetus that they have lost sight of the real reason that abortion should be legal. Borgmann feels that it is the woman’s right to have a choice and freedom over their body and the freedom to choose whether or not to have an abortion. The speaker asks why people question the age and status of the fetus, but do not concern themselves to question the rights of the woman that carries the fetus.
Pregnancy complications can include an ectopic pregnancy, preeclampsia and eclampsia, and so many more. In many cases, these symptoms and disorders can be so severe it can cost a woman’s life. “In 2021, 1,205 women died of maternal causes in the United States. ”(Donna L. Hoyert). Now imagine these numbers if abortion was off the table, the numbers would skyrocket.
Abortion is not only a fluctuating concept in our society, but an ethical and emotional debate, as well. The image I have chosen presents concepts from a cultural and historical background, as well as presents an ethical, emotional, and logical appeal to the audience. The debate about abortion has simply been overblown and exhausted. The truth of the matter is, abortion is murder. Ending a life, whether innocent or guilty, is murder.
Pregnancy, giving birth, and abortion are three interrelated topics. They offer moral dilemmas that aren’t easily solved or tackled. In this paper, I will discuss abortion and I will approach it from the point of view of a consequentialist, a deontological ethicist, and a virtue ethicist. I will start by defining abortion, provide some information about the reasons why women opt to abort a fetus, then give a specific example of a moral dilemma that a woman is facing, and explore the dilemma from the different points of view.
In fact, it is proven that babies can feel pain during an abortion. I believe abortions should be outlawed, as they are unethical for many reasons. One of the reasons abortion should be illegal is because human life does not start once a person is born, nor when the heart starts beating, but at conception. After conception, the baby grows and develops for about nine months, but this does not mean the baby is any less human than anyone else. In addition, it has been proved repeatedly that human life starts at conception.
Doris Gudino Professor Chounlamountry Political Science 1 27 July 2015 Pro-Choice Anyone? A woman has, undoubtedly, the freedom to procreate, but once a woman chooses to retreat from that freedom, a commotion arises. Abortion is a woman’s choice for many reasons. It’s her body, therefore, no one else can decide for said person.
Abortion is just a technical way of saying the murder of a unborn and should be abolished. Abortion is murder. According to lifenews.com, federal law prohibits the death penalty for a pregnant women until after the child is born. (18 U.S.C.A.S.3596). Doing this means according to the law, a innocent unborn infant cannot be sentenced to death for a crime he/she did not commit.
The loss of life is a great lose one can suffer from. The loss of life deprives the individual from experiences, projects, activities and enjoyments that would have been part of his/her future. So killing is wrong because it deprives the individual from his future. Therefore abortion is impermissible because it will deprive the fetus from his/her future. Third reason why abortion is impermissible is because it punishes the innocent fetus.
Another reason abortion is wrong is because It offends God by saying that he or she is not good enough to be apart of this world. Another reason abortion is wrong is because it can be both mentally and physically unsafe for the mother. Dr. Seuss once said that “a person's a person no matter how small.” So by aborting a baby you are killing a person and how is that no different from murder. There is no different.
Abortion has many pros and cons ha deserve to be properly discussed ad deliberated upon, before one makes a decision to support or oppose it. Every year man young women within the United States find themselves faced with an unplanned pregnancy. Whether it was unplanned or they were a victim of un consensual sex,it should naturally be the woman 's choice to have the baby or not. As young wom it can be more stressful to take on the responsibil of a child,i can even be life threatening. In some cases it is necessary to abo the baby
The consequences may not occur now but eventually in the future. Some women claim that abortion is an ordinary thing. They have a mindset to get rid of their own child. Maybe the pregnancy was unwanted or accidental.
