Many people argue if going to college is worth it or not. They question if the decision of investing Their time and money on college is going to be the right decision for them. Will it payoff with success, and leaving them richer than an average highschool graduate?. Well in David Leonhardt’s “Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Data Say” and Chris Matthews’s “Why college isn't for everyone, explained in a single chart”, They both talk about that, if college is worth it or not.

Students often leave high school with the mentality that they must enter a college. However, in the book, Is College Worth It?, by William J. Bennett and David Wilezol debates the positive and negative aspects of attending college. It is not known which was the first university to appear in the United States, but the most notorious college to be established in the 1600s was Harvard University. Since the 1600s, colleges have only been increasing in an abundant of states in the United States. Unfortunately, Bennett and Wilezol, first two chapters introduce the negative aspects of college; and, chapters three and four are universal arguments that go against each other.

Is college worth it? Recently people have debated endlessly over this juggernaut of a question. Whether it's worth the debt and the added 4 years of stress and insanity when discovering the perfect future. There are many antagonistic claims that prove each other wrong but in the long haul college offers loads of added benefits that come into play when looking for a steady high paying job. Therefor proving that college is worth it because graduates tend to make higher salaries and prove to be more employable than those lacking a college degree.

The Value of a College Degree Having a college degree is arguably one of the most important things you can achieve in your lifetime. In today’s society, it is getting much more difficult to survive without one. Most places of business that offer substantial wages and benefits require some sort of college degree. This is a problem for most people in the United States due to the fact that only 17% of the U.S. population has earned a college degree (Odland).

All your life you are told you need to go to college to be successful. In reality college is a chance to be successful but, doesn’t mean that you will be. In his article “Americas Most Overrated Product” Marty Nemko talks about college student statistics stating, "College is a wise choice for far fewer people than are currently encouraged to consider it” (527). Nemko states, “Among high school students who graduated in the bottom forty percent of their classed, and whose first institutions were four-year colleges, two thirds had not earned diplomas eight years later” (523). People who end up getting college diplomas hardly ever work in the career that they have a degree in, let alone can get jobs that require a degree.

In the article, “Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Data Say” by The New York Times explains that college is more valuable than ever. The New York Times explains how "college graduates are feeling more overqualified for the job that they do. " Due to the fact that they are not getting paid as much, as they would at a job using their degree.

In the world we live in today. Going to college is no longer a choice, or privilege, but rather a need for a brighter future . So the big question that happens to be going around is, “Is College really worth it?”According to Andrew J. Rotherham’s article “Actually, college is very much worth it.”, “5 Ways Ed Pays”produced by (The College board), and “Why College Isn't (And Shouldn’t have to be) For Everyone” written by Robert Reich. The answer to that question is yes.

, “Experts that have researched the performance and job success of college graduates have concluded that, nationwide, college graduates with a bachelor's degree earn 74 percent more per year than those who only complete high school.” This seems very logical when you look at the big picture, having furthered your education will open you up to more jobs that that require more education that will most likely pay more. The University of North Texas in their article “Why Go to College?” shows a graph from The U.S. Census Bureau that shows a professional degree could earn you around 4.4 million dollars compared to less than a high school diploma could earn you around 1 million dollars for a whole worklife. There is an ample amount of information that leads people to believe that college is a great choice. In Source F, it is shown that, “Adults who graduated from a four-year college believe that, on average, they are earning $20,000 more a year as a result of having gotten that degree. Adults who did not attend college believe that, on average they are earning $20,000 a year less as a result.” Also, provided in Source F, “...55% say it [college] was very useful in helping them prepare for a job or career.” While these statistics are true, the negatives still outweigh the positives.

Adequate amounts of college education will be key in being prepared for the future job market. If future generations aren't properly prepared for their future careers with the prerequisites a college education provides for, they'll be left floundering and surprised at their lack of skill needed for their career. College can be beneficial to the amount of earnings you may be able to make over the course of your career. Information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that people who have an associate's degree compared to those who have only a high school diploma make nearly $8,000 more per year. Furthermore, those who have went as far to acquire a bachelor's degree earn approximately $24,000 more a year.

Parents and teachers in highschool make it seem like the only way to get a good job and make a living is to go to college and get a degree. In the past this might have been true and that the only way to have a solid future. College education is not worth the cost because it can be vastly expensive, create a large amount of debt, and leave the person unprepared for the job. College today can create lots of debt for the student even years after they graduate from college. Although people may argue that a person can take care of the debt faster the person may not have the ability to do so.

As a High School Junior looking at jaw dropping tuition prices, my family and I often ask ourselves a question I’m sure many other American households are challenged with: Is a college degree actually worth it? Once you look past the recent unemployment rate for college grads, you’ll find that a college degree proves to be highly beneficial once placed in a career. Degree holders often enjoy benefits such as higher pay, higher-skilled work, and an intellectual advantage over their coworkers that do not have a degree. These benefits often outweigh the seemingly outrageous cost of college, making the price tag more than worth it.
