Is Society Too Dependent On Technology?

Technology impacts society and individual relationships by making it harder for people to communicate and have relationships by distracting people from having conversations with one another which leads to people losing relationships. This is seen in Fahrenheit 451 when Montag had finished his shift he came home to Mildred and noticed, “in her ears the little Seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight…” (Bradbury 10). The Seashells in Mildred’s ears distracted her from her husband and made it harder for Montag to talk to her which led to them becoming distant. Also, in the TED talk with Sherry Turkle, she says, “People text or do email during corporate board meetings.

“You want to go back to the days of crime, murder, and terrorism, phones keep us happy and safe.” The reason crime isn't happening anymore in this dystopia is because of the phones. The phones kept them distracted from everything and then the world became revolved around phones and social media and just technology in general. This kept going to the point where phones were mandatory and people were being watched to make sure everyone had a phone. In the article Impact and Implications of the Technology it talks a lot about how technology and the media can make a big impact on our mental health and life in the worst ways possible.

Turkle states that, “the mere presence of a phone on a table between them (two people) or in the periphery of their vision changes both what they talk about and the degree of connection they feel.” While this may be true, along with the other studies on how technology is detrimental to society, there as also positives aspects that contribute to society as well. “It is not about giving our phones but about using them with greater intention” (Turkle). This quote by Turkle embodies how I feel about the technology debate and the more new technology and phones have developed the more we have analyzed whether or not they are good for our society, and at what age kids should use them.

Growing Up Tethered A professor at the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT, Sherry Turkle talks about how kids today are attached and somewhat obsessed with technology in her article called “Growing Up Tethered.” Turkle interviews with many different teenagers about the different types of technology they possess and how it impacts their everyday life. She talks a lot about how technology can do away with our privacy and also how people feel the need to be constantly connected.

Sometimes people use television to forget about a hard time at work, others using phones in public, causing lack of communication with people nearby. “Little by little, technology has become an integral part of the way that people communicate with one another and has increasingly taken the place of face-to-face communication. Due to the rapid expansion of technology, many individuals fear that people may be too immersed in this digital world and not present enough in the real world,”. People, especially in the United States, spend so much time on the internet they get separated from their real life and don't know what’s going on around them. Not only does Technology take away from everyone's real life, but it also distances people from family and friends.

Our educational system is failing us. The United States of America is supposed to be the “greatest” country in the world but statistics are showing that our government/educational system is failing us; children/young adults of the nation. Being a student of a middle ranked school in Arizona, I personally have had a first-hand feel for how good and/or bad teaching affects students. Just in high school I have had teachers that would just assign websites as our lesson and even teachers that sit at their desk for the whole hour; don’t even go over the mindset, homework, and maybe only show one problem so that we’ll know what the homework will be like. Until sophomore year I didn’t even know the differences between you’re, your, too, and to.

In conclusion, technology can have negative impacts on today’s people in many ways. It is harmful to people’s well-being, makes people lose physical connections with those around them, and it makes students disregard their work. Technology is everywhere in today’s society. These devices can be so harmful to people without them even knowing it. People should be more aware of what technology can do, and try their best not to depend on

Since social media came around , there’s have been a decrease in real-life conversations , More people are building a relationship online and drifting away from the real world. It's starting to cause a lack of face to face communication. Teenagers don't even pay attention to the outside world or their surroundings when they’re on their phones. You get easily distracted when you are on your phone. Also technology causes you to miss out on your sleep and losing sleep have negative effects on your brain.

Nowadays, technology devices become plays an important role in our daily lives, especially in adolescents’ categories. While there is a very clear argument for how the technology is effected on us and causing social isolation as we know, but in another way is also the argument that these technologies are helping us to become more social in our society. This is very probably because we have a good and perfect ability to communicate with each other. Despite long distances. We all know that the goal of technology is to make our lives easier and more efficient.

Technology has always been progressing thus it is rampant in our society today. We use technology; depend on technology in our daily life and our needs and demands for technology keep on rising (Ramey, 2012). Wherever you look, you will see people holding different kinds of technology like cell phone, laptop, tablets and etc. It appears to most of us that technology is a necessity to the point where we can no longer live without it. According to Gavin (2013), technology moves at a rapid pace, and can be hard to keep up with at times.

Melissa Nilles, an Arts & Entertainment editor has stated, “Instead of spending time in person with friends, we just call, text or instant message them. It may seem simpler, but we ultimately end up seeing friends face to face a lot less” (Nilles). This shows that humans nowadays now have less experiences of the joy of true, face to face human interaction, because people text and use phones to talk. Also, Social skills in children are becoming worse from technology. Victoria Cobb, a graduate from the University of Dayton, has noticed that children have less social skills due to technology that they use in day to day life (Cobb).

Nowadays, the world has changed. The world now are modern because of the power of technology. People may not have a good life without this technology because of people nowadays are dependence on technology mostly. As we know,the technology are created to make our life more better, easier and comfortable. We admitted that the technology are giving us a lot of benefits,but we has also realise that the technology can give bad effect for us.

Technology brought us machines, computers, cars and aeroplanes. It made the world smaller by providing good communication tools, made it possible to explore the solar system and the universe and proved the significance in human advancement. There is no denying technology is great, but are humans becoming too dependent on technology? Advancements in technology have enabled humans to do things that were unimaginable those days and it has certainly made many tasks easier than they were before. How many of us can go for a week without an internet connection or cell phone?
