Rujuta Swadi #20 Period 1/2 A Message to Victims (Topic Sentence/Question) Every year, about 3.2 million kids teens are bullied at school to the point where suicide seems like their only escape. Jamie Nabozny was one of those people who almost committed suicide because he felt hopeless. After being encouraged to sue the Ashland School District in court, and winning, (thesis statement) he has made it his mission to encourages others to fight back. (Background Info) Jamie Nabozny was a typical middle school student who happened to be gay. The bullying started with some students calling him pejorative (CRAFT) names behind the teacher’s back, and sometimes, right in front of the teacher’s face. He put up with it for some time until attempting to commit suicide. He had to have his stomach pumped while his mother stood by with no idea of how how to help her son. (Explain with evidence). A particularly horrific incident occurred where a group of boys kicked Nabozny so hard he had to have surgery. They told Nabozny not to tell anyone about what they did or they would kill him. (Clincher) The threat prevented Nabozny from seeking help at first but the second time he ran away he was convinced by a social worker to hold the school accountable for all that had happened to him. By suing the school, Jamie Nabozny’s case became well known, as not many students who sue schools actually succeed. David Springer was the head lawyer in Nabozny’s case. Dustin Seal, a junior at Powell High School, Knoxville, TN drove his mom’s car to Friday-night football game with his friends who had put a knife in the glove compartment without his information. Over a suspicion of drinking alcohol, school vice principal searched Dustin’s car and found a hunting knife. Being unaware of the knife Dustin got suspended with pending expulsion from Powell high by the principal. Following with several appeal processes School board sided with the school principal on expelling Dustin. His father sued the school board for violation of Dustin’s right under fourth and fourteenth amendments to Federal court ruled in favor of Seal and the case was settled with $30,000 award to Dustin.
Jackie Robinson During Jackie Robinson’s life he has had a major effect in the way society looks at African Americans playing baseball. Roberison ability to take risk impacted the 60 year color barrier that was occurring. Jackie Robinson’s journey of excellence started on January 31, in Cairo Georgia. Roberson has been dealing with adversity every since he was young.
The harassments were reactions of other people towards Jamie’s diversity. No one is the same, there will always be a difference. To make matters worse the principal does not stick up for Jamie during these hard times. After Jamie receives beating in the bathroom before school, Mrs. Nabozny arranged a meeting with the principal, the bullies, and the bullies’ parents. At the meeting the principal told Jamie that he had to expect that kind of reaction from people if he was going to be openly gay.
An Australian writer Kate McCaffrey wrote novel Destroying Avalon in 2006. It highlights how “cyberbullying” affects innocent children in different surroundings with their own distinct and special characteristic and feature. It realistically depicts the heartbreaking consequences of school violence, committing a suicide, from the perspective of another victim. I will write an article in the perspective of the school counselor, who is in charge of the event of a child dying, because he or she is expert in controlling school brutality, so she or he can provide adequate advice to students and it can save the students from school harassment. Due to the rise of bullying lawsuits and student suicides, state legislators plan to take action by implementing new rules in schools and harsh punishments to those who instigated bullying in the first place. Outside of school, bullying cases in the military and the national league football has drawn more awareness regarding bullying taken place at work. Opponents of the some antibullying laws say it unfairly targets certain student regarding their race and religion with harsh punishments and misconception of the meaning bullying. In “How to Handle a Bully,” by Kathiann Kowalski, an experienced journalist, Kowalski reports the different strategies to stop bullying. She informs that bullying is at its peak in the late teenage years, but can start in an early age. Kowalski concurs that girls intimidates as much as boys; however, they do it differently. She explores many reasons why bullying occurs at the first place, and who starts bullying. Kowalski exemplifies the situations that victims could be in, and the solution on how to handle the bully.
Jessica, The boy act out only at home after school where he reported to be bullied and called names by his classmates. He listed the names but I cannot remember them. From my understanding, they are hateful names that could make anyone get angry and hate who they are or where they come from. His mom reported that he calls her stupid and dumb because she cannot speak English language fluently. I guess the kids who pick on him would have also mentioned this to him.
Bullying is an undesirable, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves actual disparity of power. According to Megan Brooks bullying is a serious public health problems, with significant short-and long-term psychological consequences for the child who is bullied and the child who is the bully. Bullying has been named an “emerging public health issue requiring intervention” (Ansary, Elias, Greene, & Green, 2015, p. 27). As a major problem in schools around the world, the issue of bullying must be addressed in order to keep students physically and emotionally safe. The act of bullying not only affects the well-being of the person being targeted, but it also affects the rest of the school community too. It can be difficult for teachers, principals, and superintendents to make an ethical decision about what to do when bullying occurs because there are misunderstandings about what bullying is, leading to the improper identification of situations.
Bullying in Schools What seems fun and harmless for some students, is painful and degrading to others.
