Ayn Rand uses the archetype of Light and Darkness many times throughout her story. She uses the symbol of light to show Equality’s self-discovery. Since darkness is the opposite of this, it is the oppression and stifling he endures in the collective. The theme of this novel is finding freedom through separation from others.

The climax of the novel was when Jason and Scream attacked the Ugly Children Brigade at their meet-and-greet party with Gabe. They showed up with baseball bats in hand, began threatening the people, and attacked John. Before the attack, they took off their masks and revealed their identities: Paul Willard and Kyle Marshall, ex boyfriends of Heather; the flirtatious girl who had her eye on Gabe. After they were taken into custody and John was driven to the hospital, Gabe found out that John was in a coma and might not recover from the blow to the head.

On the contrary, darkness threatens the characters in the story. The night, which exemplifies social and personal challenges, can be discovered everywhere. Literary, the darkness haunts the figures in the text, something they are aware of when the sun goes down. Similarly, Sonny's problems in prison, addiction to drugs, and the condition of life in Harlem are exemplified by the darkness (King and Lynn 47-49). Ultimately, the light comes to signify comfort, salvation, and love, while darkness represents the misery and fear that persistently threatens to extinguish it.

When humans are surrounded in an endless chasm of darkness, they find it necessary to grasp onto whatever dim hope may be near them. They find it necessary to set their minds onto a mission or action, however feasible or relevant, and turn all thoughts away from death or despair. Light and dark are words commonly thrown about, usually to describe gradients of color. But humans need light in the sense of comfort, a way out, or the promise of salvation. They have to find this light in life, to turn away from the darkness.

The Isa Upanishad, in a broad sense, concerns itself with the quest for enlightenment and finding one’s self, or soul. It repeatedly emphasizes the importance of this venture and reiterates the plight of those who choose to remain ignorant, or in “blind darkness”; or even worse, those who delight in learning and find themselves in a “greater darkness”. These themes are also explored in various forms in the other extracts. In the Heraclitus of Ephesus extract, for example, there are numerous similarities that can be identified.

“Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night” is a poem written by Dylan Thomas at the time when his father was at the brink of death. The piece is actually a villanelle where it consist of six stanzas, each with three lines except for the sixth stanza which has four lines. The rhymes on the first until fifth stanzas are aba, aba, aba, aba, aba. While, abaa is the rhyme for the last quatrain stanza. Thomas died a few months after his father, it is believed that this poem was written by him especially for his father.

Darkness and music have given unusual prominence that emphasises the awful life in Harlem, and how music brought those two brothers together at the end of the story. Each symbol represents its own unique sign. The light used in many forms such as moonlight, spotlight, or even the light of the car. “There isn’t any other tale to tell, it’s the only light we’ve got in all this darkness” (James). Besides the fear, and despair of society in Harlem, the light seems to be glowing in the darkness, symbolizes a form of salvation and a moral life.

Aurora is the roman goddess of dawn (Myths Encyclopedia). Reading this the first time, it’s understandable that the reader thinks Wheatley is discussing how once in heaven she won’t be writing about Aurora anymore. However, it is striking that Wheatley would choose this particular mythological goddess. She directly pertains to the idea of light imagery. Aurora rising every morning can be considered significant in the context of this poem because it, yet again, symbolizes the fact that darkness is always followed by light.

“Night” is a poem by Hilda Doolittle better known as H.D. Born in Pennsylvania on September 10, 1998. The work of H.D was “characterized by the intense strength of her image economy of language and use of classical mythology”. Mythology is the myths of a group of people depending on each culture. While classical is a long established event or idea or also traditional, HD used traditional myths to create each poem. She was also the leader of the imagist movement which was very important at that time.

The ominous poem “The Raven”, written by Edgar Allen Poe, creates suspense throughout by using a combination of different literary devices, such as hyperbole, repetition and pathos. Although the use of literary devices helps create the mood, the way Poe incorporates a variety of structural elements, which include multiple stanzas, longer sentences and the similarities of structure between the poem and a story, help create a darker mood. The poem is set during the mid nineteenth century, at what is referred to as the witching hour, also known as midnight. The setting alone creates a very dark, suspenseful mood. “The Raven” crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features.

Traditional poetry is known for being strict in form and often rhyming, as it is apt to have a symmetrical, specific structure; but over time, there is the propensity to break from the orthodox ways for more freedom, thus creating contemporary poetry. This kind of poetry frequently consists of free verses, and is difficult to define because of its many possibilities. Although contemporary poetry does not employ any rhyme or poetic meter due to the use of free verse, contemporary poets implement poetic devices to develop compelling expressions that please their readers.
