A man known as brother, father, soldier, outlaw, avenger of the poor; a man known as Jesse James was born on September 5, 1847 in Kearney, Missouri and assassinated only miles away in St. Joseph, Missouri on April 3, 1882 (Jesse James, Umsystem.edu). He was as notorious as the president was famous, but even with hundreds hoping for the bounty on his head, James was able to evade officials and remain a mystery. This man “was literally a legend” (Stiles, prologue). His crimes’ profit adds up to an estimated amount of $200,000 (Jesse James Biography, Biography.com), which today could be over 3 million dollars. The assassination of Jesse James is justified because he was not the hero people thought him to be and had murdered many who stood …show more content…
Since there is no proof or evidence, their heroic reputation was most likely a facade (Jesse James Biography, Biography.com). His real ambition of riches was driven by politics (Stiles, prologue). Before he began his life of a criminal, he fought as a Confederate soldier in the American Civil War. James’s flaming malice toward the Union was sparked, in 1863, when Union soldiers threatened and harmed his family while searching for information about the Confederates (Jesse James, Umsystem.edu). This passion for hatred was constantly fueled while James was fighting in the Civil War. The same motives used to reason for why he fought for the confederates can be used to reason for why he committed his lawlessness. Before James’s death, there were around 300 criminals who had a reward on their head, and only four pertained to Jesse James. Even with the hundreds of other criminals, Jesse James remained one of the most notorious. His infamy resulted from his gang’s 20 bank and train robberies from about 1860 to 1882 (Jesse James Biography, Biography.com). James and his men were accountable for the murders of anyone who stood in their way. James eventually recruited two new men into his group, they were his assassins Charlie and Robert
Is John Brown crazy? Should John Brown’s violence be justified for what most say a noble cause? Is John Brown an “American hero” or a “Cold terrorist?” John Brown isn’t crazy but may seem that way when you look at what he has sacrificed. John Brown Recently John Brown’s noble cause has been questioned and people have made accusations whether he should considered a patriot or a terrorist.
We’ve all heard the stories about Honest Abe and his untimely assassination in the theatre, but Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard’s book Killing Lincoln transports us back in time and relives the story of the days leading up to the day that changed America forever. Our story opens up March 4, 1865, six weeks before Lincoln’s assassination, when the United States of America was in the midst of its biggest turmoil. The Southern and the Northern states had divided into the Confederacy and the Union and were fighting in America’s bloodiest war in history: the Civil War. Lincoln was just reelected by his people and taking his second oath of office, little does he know that the man who will seal his fate is sitting in this very crowd and harboring
Did you know that some people, including President Abraham Lincoln, believed that John Brown was a “misguided fanatic?” I believe that John Brown was a “misguided fanatic” because of how he committed treason as well as murder while he was trying to put a stop to slavery. For instance, according to, “The Last Meeting Between Frederick Douglass and John Brown”, Douglass believed that John Brown’s plan of invading the Federal arsenal at Harper 's Ferry, Virginia would “ have been fatal to the work of the helping slaves escape.” Another example, as specified by “John Brown’s Speech”, John Brown never prearranged to murder and commit treason, it just went horribly wrong. Since John Brown did commit treason, I believe that John Brown would have done
Ulysses S. Grant, The Unlikely Hero by Michael Korda is a story about the life of Ulysses S. Grant. Grant became one of the first presidents to be elected without barely giving a speech. One lesson that can be learned from his life is that one shouldn't give into substance abuse. Grant’s habit of smoking eventually ended his life through throat cancer.
This is where he became friends with Andrew Jackson. In 1820 he was accepted by the bar and had a successful practice as a debtor. When he left legislature he moved to the United States House of Representatives, he serves from 1825 though 1839, he decided to leave to become governor of Tennessee. Andrew Jackson convinced Polk to run for President, because he thought Martin Buren had committed political suicide by announcing to annexation of Texas. ( Crystal Reference Encyclopedia) James had 15 slaves, he treated them horribly and most of his slaves were runaways, due to his treatments.
The attack at Pottawatomie Creek John Brown and his company of free state volunteers murdered five men along the creek in Kansas. The men that they killed were associated with the pro-slavery Law but they did not slave owners. He is very difficult to talk about in terms of terrorism and freedom fighter because he has done the events of both. The attack at Harper's Ferry was the last attempt to help free slaves, but the United States Marines stopped Brown he tried to initiate a slave rebellion in 1859 by taking over the U.S arsenal.
One reason I believe Andrew Jackson is a hero is because he worked hard to empower the common people. The source: Thomas Bailey and David Kennedy, The American Pageant, 1994 states, “Jackson’s victory accelerated the transfer of national power from the country house to the farmhouse, from the East to the West, from the snobs to the mobs. If Jefferson had been the hero of the gentleman farmer, Jackson was the hero of the dirt farmer.” The quote shows that Jackson equalized the power between the wealthy and
This is a big deal because blacks were not given the respect that they deserved, however, this was one moment. His legacy does not portray the respect that he had for blacks or slaves but instead his legacy is violence. Source 2 has a letter from Mahala Doyle. She writes “I do feel gratified to hear that you were stopped in your fiendish career at harper’s ferry… [For you] entered my house at midnight and arrested my husband and two boys, and took them out of the yard and in cold blood shot them dead in my hearing.”
James is irresponsible, thoughtless, and most of all untrustworthy. First, James is irresponsible. James took his brother Isaac to a dangerous place when he was required to be at home taking care of his brother while his mom was at work. He makes sure his mom was aboard the bus before they left.
However, radicalism of any variety is still dangerous. Though he was well-meaning, John Brown’s actions were not only inexcusable, but has the potential to reflect negatively on the abolitionist cause. John Brown was, in simplest terms, a murderer. In is testament (Doc 1), he uses the abolitionist movement to justify the murders of people in slave states. However, he is quick to admit that he “feel(s) no consciousness of guilt” (Doc 1).

James losing the fight in the beginning is a symbolization for the breaking point of every Americans life during the Beginning of the Great Depression. When James wins the fight at the end it symbolizes how most Americans were able to pull themselves out of the horrible depression. Throughout all the hardships James had faith in himself that he would be able to fight again and make enough money to provide for his family again because of that he was able to accomplish
Most of James inspiration came from experiences and religion. James was once a slave, so he was able to connect to the black community on a deeper level. When James was in college, he took a fieldtrip and experienced life among the poor African Americans. By witnessing the inhuman quality of life, James was inspired to fight for equality. His goal was to show the buried greatness and culture in black society.
