John Proctor's Decisions In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

In Act Three of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, John Proctor admits he has committed adultery with Abigail motivated in trying to save his wife, while his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, lies about why she kicked Abigail from their house to protect her and her husbands privacy. I feel as though John’s actions were justified and Elizabeth’s actions were not. John Proctor was trying to get the court to see Abigail was a terrible, unsaintly fraud in her claims of being witched. John tells the court that his wife, who has never told a lie, would concur to the affair accusations brought against Abigail. When brought into the court Elizabeth was questioned on why she had kicked Abigail out of their home and she replied in a manner that did not show

John Proctor could be considered a tragic hero in The Crucible. A tragic hero is a person who a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall. John is also a very respected man in Salem and he had a prominent role in his community. WIth every tragic hero they have a great flaw that can help with their downfall. Therefore we are lead to believe that John Proctor is a tragic hero.

Throughout the course of human history, people have always had a profound respect for their own reputation or image. No one desires to be known as a thief, liar, cheater, adulterer, or anything in between. When trying to protect a reputation, people will go to the full extent. The struggle for protecting a reputation can lead to the demise of others in the process.

In Arthur Miller’s book, “The Crucible” there is one character who stands out from the rest, who catches your attention throughout the story, and his name is John Proctor. A tragic hero is a member of the community that has a tragic flaw that eventually will lead straight to a tragic fail. Through his good and bad deeds, his adultery, and his stuck up pride, would Mr. John Proctor be considered a tragic hero? John Proctor is a very prominent man in this community. He helps work the fields, he takes the load of people who can’t do it, and he is just all around a town favorite.

In some way’s Reverend Hale’s return to Salem was to save the accused starting with John Proctor. In Author Miller’s Crucible, Reverend Hale believes if he can get Mr. Proctor to confess others who are accused will follow in his footsteps. Hale uses Elizabeth, Mr. Proctors wife to accomplish the convincing. John brings the matter to Elizabeth before she gets the chance to bring up the subject of matter. Sickening with fear, but faith inside her Elizabeth tells John to as he wishes.

From the years of 1692-1693, there were a series of trials in which people were accused of witchcraft, and if without confession, were sentenced to hang. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller develops John Proctor's conflict with guilt through metaphors and hyperboles, demonstrating how although guilt can destroy a person, taking action to face one’s guilt through sacrifice can help one change for the better by offering a chance at redemption.

Destroying a confession to the courts is unimaginable. However if that confession was fabricated to save face it would be thrown out of the courts. In the case of John Proctor in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, he takes matters of the courts into his own hands and does away with his fickle confession. Many wonder why he would throw away his one bargaining chip at receiving mercy. The reason why, as it always is when you come down to the nature of men, is he wanted to die.

The Crucible has many different themes. One of the major themes in “The Crucible” is preserving one’s reputation. Three Characters who show this theme are John Proctor, Reverend Parris, and Governor Danforth. John Proctor has a good reputation which he wants to keep in tact. This causes events that will get him hung at the end of the play.

Through the development of the character John Proctor from The Crucible, Arthur Miller strives to portray the extent of the effects leading to the downfall of a great man who made a single human error of adultery which evolved into a mass hysteria of his community and personal life. These unfortunate events changed him from an honest, upstanding community man to the shell of a man that no longer felt worthy in the eyes of his wife or god, and then back to an honorable, honest man who left this world with immense dignity and integrity. John Proctor was a hard-working farmer who took great pride in himself, his family, and farm. He was a loving father and husband to a wife and three children. He was a very righteous, dedicated, and prideful

He was trying to amend the relationship. Proctor realizes in court when Mary Warren accused him of being the devil that all his poorly made choice of sleeping with Abigail led him to his fate. A couple of months after he was accused and sent to jail, the judge brings in Elizabeth to try and reason with Proctor. Elizabeth told the judge that she doesn’t promise anything and to let her talk to him to see what decision they could come to.

A tragic hero is defined as a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy. Aristotle defines a tragic hero as “a person who must evoke a sense of pity and fear in the audience. He is considered a man of misfortune that comes to him through error of judgment.” For a tragedy such as The Crucible, a tragic hero is necessary to [introduce] pity and [evoke] the audience. The qualities of a tragic hero in The Crucible can be seen in John Proctor through his noble traits, tragic flaw, and the cause of his ultimate downfall.

In the previous semester of English 11A, we watched and studied “The Crucible”. The main character, John Proctor, makes many decisions throughout the film that majorly influence the plot and the consequences. Today, I will be discussing three decisions that I believe John Proctor made, that formed the outcome of the story. I believe his three major decisions were; having an affair with Abigail Williams, allowing his servant to bring the doll she crafted into the house, and tearing up the paper that was to be placed on the door of the chapel.

Having a good reputation in town can change in a snap of a finger with things such as the sins of someone that you would least expect it from. All the sins of someone wouldn’t matter because what matters is the bigger picture which is the confession! The worst sin in the judge's eyes is a lie because it leads those surrounding them to be harmed, which would be selfish of someone that denied it all until it overthrew him and his name didn’t matter anymore in town! Reputation is the belief or opinions from others based upon your character .I s a good image more important than telling the truth? Reputation is important in the strict Puritan way of life town Salem. Public and Private moralities are equal in importance in the Crucible. Several Characters base their actions to protect their reputations.

Proctors final act was honor. Proctors actions were noble, he was a very honorable man. His actions really helped him and his family name. In the passage of the book ¨The Crucible” John Proctor says ¨i have given you my soul, let me keep my family name.¨ This statement is very noble.
