John proctor’s good name
Courage. This word is easy to say, but hard to explain. To have courage isn’t always fighting bad guys; sometimes being courageous is just standing up for what you believe in. Just like John Proctor did in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible. He stood up against a court to save his friends and family from hanging, and that took some courage. John admitted to the court and the town that he had an affair with Abigail Williams. John also refused to lie to save his life, instead he kept the truth and his pride and he hanged for it. The fact that he would rather die than to slaughter his family’s name, that says a lot, to me it says that he was thinking of his wife and kids instead of himself. If I haven’t made myself clear yet, I believe John Proctor is the most courageous character in The Crucible.

He made Mary tell the truth to the court that the girls are lying and have “never seen no spirits.” After hearing this Abigail Williams starts yelling that Mary is sending her spirit to attack the girls. Once this was said John Proctor grabbed Abigail by her hair and threw her to the ground. He then proceeded to tell the court about his affair with her, and how she wants his wife dead so she could marry John. The court then interviewed Mrs. Proctor and she stated that her husband didn’t have an affair. There was an argument, then all the girls start screaming that Mary’s spirit was attacking. The whole court ran out into the water where John Proctor yells “God is dead.” John gets arrested and locked in
At the conclusion of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor exhibits tremendous honor. John’s moving oration just before destroying his confession revealed that he his thoughts towards lying. In an attempt to save his good name, John Proctor would put his life on the line to go out with honesty. Prior to the witch accusations, John Proctor put his good name in jeopardy after fooling around with Abigail Williams.
After the trials were finished they immediately started hanging the list of people that were convicted of the crimes. John Proctor being one of those people, was not yet hanging but he was being held captive. Abigail visits him and tries to apologies and get him to run off with her. He turns her down and says he would rather go to hell then run off with her. Abigail apologies and tells him
Mr. Proctor has lost his wife because of undeniably disgusting lies, put forth by Abigail. Mrs. Proctor has been placed in jail and because of Mr. Proctors pride, he decides to do something about it. Proctor goes with Mary to the village to try and free Mrs. Proctor.
He would rather die than have his family name soiled, that takes a lot of bravery. John also could not let the other innocent victims hang while he lied to live. John Proctor, all in all, stood by what he believed in, till the end of his life, that is
In the play The Crucible by playwright Arthur Miller takes place in Salem, Massachusetts 1692. The play is based on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. As puritans are being accused of witch craft, these big accusations come with deadly consequences to many civilians. These accusations started when Abigail Williams and her friends got caught dancing in the woods doing witch craft. Being the minister’s niece, she takes matter into her own hands in order to save herself from being hanged.
Courage is measured by an individual’s willingness to continue fighting even when the likelihood of victory is small. In the play, “The Crucible”, written by Arthur Miller, it tests the courage of the villagers in Salem through situations created by greed, cowardice, and other evils in the world. Several characters display a great deal of courage but none demonstrate this trait more than John Proctor. John Proctor is a farmer who is characterized as a proud man. Through out the beginning of the play, Miller gives the readers little clues to suggest that John and Abigail had an affair.
The Crucible is an allegorical play written by Arthur Miller that criticizes McCarthyism during the 1950s through an historical event called the Salem witchcraft trials. The main protagonist is John Proctor, a man with a good reputation for being an honest and a diligent person. The second most important character, Reverend Hale, is a witchcraft expert who comes to Salem to determine whether or not witchcraft is present in Salem. They both are devout Puritans; however, they are different in the ways they show their piety, causing them to have numerous similarities and differences. Proctor and Hale, are similar because they both see the genuine motivations behind the accusations and struggle to defend the people being harmed.
John proctor admits of adultery only to save abigail and john had already confess he had an affair with abigail lies to the court about why she fired already in the first place in turn in discredit towards what john said. Abigail and the other girls in the courtroom pretended to see a yellow bird sent by mary to harm them. To save herself Mary says that John proctor was working for the devil. Revein hslr tries to confess that he is with the devil even though they are innocent so that they won't have to be hanged. In the courtroom they kept going back and forth about john being with the devil they are innocent and abigail will not face her charges.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor was accused of witchcraft. John Proctor was a man of great integrity and knew he did nothing wrong. He was given the choice to confess and lie or be hung. Being the honest and stubborn man that he was, he decided his name was more important than his life. John struggled both internally and with others while trying to fight for what he thought was right.
He defends his wife and tells the court that his wife fired Abigail because of their affair. When the court brought Elizabeth Proctor into the court and asked her about the affair she denied it. Even though she knew the affair was true she denied it because she didn’t know Proctor had confessed and wanted to take her husband’s name
JOHN PROCTOR: TRAGIC HERO Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a greatly revered work, and it reflected the times of America in the days of McCarthyism. Perhaps the character that connected to the audience most was John Proctor, the protagonist of the play. He reflects the mistakes that we have made in our lives, and the struggle that some of have while trying to take the blindfold off of other people. He should be considered a hero because he feels guilt, and therefore tries to make up for the fact that he once had an affair.
The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.
John Proctor, the main character is accused of witchcraft by Mary Warren. However in actuality, Abigail and the other girls had pretended that Mary was bewitching them in the court. This caused Mary to eventually break down and wrongly accuse John Proctor of witchcraft. This one act of accusation brings upon John’s ultimate condemnation by confession. This can be noticed through Mary’s hysterical confession on page 118 where she points at Proctor and says, “You’re the Devil’s man!”
In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.
Moreover, another important crucible someone had in the story developed from the very beginning all the way to the end. In the beginning of the story before even the trials really began we learned about the adultery of John Proctor. While in the house talking to Elizabeth, they have a conversation about what John has done and how she cannot forgive him, he must forgive himself, “You will not judge me more, Elizabeth” (54-55). He says she forgets and forgives nothing but he will not forgiving himself.
