In the modern world, media is the most consequential industry in society. Through portraying
2 and presenting ideologies, it undoubtedly has a major influence on our thoughts and actions.
3 It is our main source on remaining up to date with current events and what is happening in the
4 world. As humans, we constantly strive towards new information and possess an almost innate
5 desire to be 'kept in the loop'. Our curiosity is what drives us, what motivates us. There are
6 a multitude of human languages in the world in which there isn't word for "yes" or "no"- but
7 every language on the planet has a word for "Why?". Humans have always been deeply curious
8 beings, and curiosity is likewise what urges me to continue my studies with

28 In college I was involved in the Newspaper Club in which I was the editor, and it taught me a
29 multitude of priceless skills that I will be excited to carry through into my university life
30 and likewise the world around me. We had to consistently work as a team to ensure deadlines
31 were met, which often involved working under a lot of pressure. This pressure often made the
32 outcome even more rewarding and gratifying.
33 A creative outlet of mine, and a hobby I have always loved is photography. It is said that a
34 picture is worth a thousand words, and when I struggle to articulate myself I find it is a
35 good way to express myself. Although just a hobby, I do recognise that it is an essential part
36 of journalism, and often depicts issues that words could not do justice as photographs are
37 universally understood.
38 In summary, the idea of continuing my studies of Media and Criminology into University is
39 something I am inexplicably excited about. A quote that perfectly encapsulates what I want
For instance, Internet connection and a great assortment of modern technologies give us a choice to select individually what our minds will be filled with. Hence, it has been estimated that an overall percentage of TV watchers has significantly decreased. Therefore, I consider that media’s impact is less significant than it used to be as people themselves select the material they want to receive. Therefore, it challenges the validity of the argument in times of easily accessible Internet.
This second piece of writing is from my time enrolled in UW Stout’s Communicating with Emerging Media certificate program. This thesis driven essay is in response to a prompt for the Visual Rhetoric final project. The assignment was to complete a visual-rhetorical analysis of a controversial artifact of my choosing. In it, I was required to pose a question of visual significance and provide detailed, well supported answer using my own visual analysis and principles from the readings. While I am pleased with the finished product, writing this paper challenged my analytical and time managements skills and taught me something about myself.
Today’s society has an obsession with the media, to the length that the president of the United States will claim credible news outlets as “Fake news”. According to journalism.org, 57% of Americans receive their news from the television and 38% from the internet, as opposed to the 20% that receive their news from physical newspapers (Mitchell). The current societal obsession with the media is one predicated by many, and one that will continue
I am a third year transferred student at UC Berkeley and am very interested in learning media studies as my major. After attending Media Study 10, I believe studying media would be an ideal direction for me to broad my knowledge and experience My interests in media started when I was teenager as a reporter in my school’s broadcasting club. There, I enjoyed reporting news and information but also had opportunities to understand the influence that the media could have to change our lives as I delivered critical issues. When I came to the U.S., I felt a discernible disjointedness between many different groups of international students, and believed this was because of a deficiency of understanding and communication between different perspectives.
The mass media has many influences on how society perceives certain things. The media can be seen to shape people’s opinion of themselves, enforce gender stereotypes, and in some ways the media also decides what we should value. The average American household has more TVs in the house than people, there’s about 2.73 television sets and 2.55 people per household, and at least one TV is on eight hours a day (Goodall, p. 160). This explains why we are so influenced by what we see and hear in the media, when we surround ourselves with media we can’t help but to be influenced by it. The way that the media influences people isn’t always bad, sometimes the media’s influences are good, for example news broadcasts.
Chapter One: You Are What You See In today’s society, the media is inescapable. The advancements of technology have led to an even larger outreach of media--touching close to every person. For me, the media has always been an influence in my life. From the songs I’ve listen to, the movies I grew up watching, and the stories I’ve heard, the media has sculpted a significant portion of my identity.
Media have certainly became a big part of our daily life, an important element of our daily viewable culture, and more familiar the violence and monstrosity which is described in it. Audiences barley think about this problem and they also leave aside the consequences of that. Media got a great impact on people’s culture and the way they act now a days, Media is responsible for creating opinions, myths, languages and customs. They can also create uncontrollable monsters; false fantasies and contradictory impact On the exact society for which they engage. Society falls under the mercy of the fast effect of the portrait; it takes a fractional vision of owning in its own hand the capability of telling information; it is controlled by the objective
It is this that I believe curiosity is the greatest factor to explore. Curiosity drives humans to succeed in their endeavors as much as determination in that determination and curiosity are one in the same. When people become determined to do something, it is curiosity that keeps the person
Together with Transgender Law Center, The GSA Network launched TRUTH, a “national storytelling campaign that aims to build empathy, understanding, and a movement for transgender and gender non-conforming youth and their families to share their stories in their own words and in their own way” (GSA Network 200). TRUTH combines video storytelling with support, guidance, and community-building for youth and their families. It also provides resources for media professionals in order to address the hostility and stereotypes transgender and gender non-conforming youth face. This relates to a media ecologies approach because “there is the possibility offered via the Internet to locate others with shared interests and needs, however scattered geographically and distant socially they might be” (O’Riordan& Phillips 7). The activity that I have been most involved in is Yearbook. I worked as a staff member for three years and this year am the Editor-In-Chief. My experiences in yearbook have helped me learn and grow in many different ways. First, I’ve improved my time management skills. Especially as Editor I have had to work around the deadlines from Jostens, the company we work with to create the yearbook; I have to manage my time and the time of the other staff members to ensure that we meet all of our deadlines.
Media are platforms of mass communication that can be categorized as either new of traditional media, with new media being forms of communication that make use of technologies such as the Internet, and traditional media being more conventional forms of media such as newspapers.
