Teachers are constantly attempting to find a way to encourage students to be more involved and interested in the learning concepts they are presenting them with. In Michael J. Romicks’ "Totally Tuned In," he discusses his idea of creating an alternative way of teaching in way of merging English standards and music. In the beginning of his writing, he tells a personal anecdotes of the first time his 8th grade teacher introduced him to the idea of music incorporated in learning. The way he describes the connection is almost as though a light bulb went off in his head, because for the first time he really understood. These are very similar to the positive outcomes that Romick discussed in his article that he noticed occurring in his classroom after creating lesson plans correlated with songs. Also similar to Romick’s beliefs, Chris Boyd Brewer states, “Music will activate students mentally, physically, and emotionally and create learning states which enhance understanding of learning,” which will not only benefit the teacher, but also the student while gaining a greater knowledge in the class (Brewer 1995). Mike Rose author of “Blue Collar Brilliance” he reminisces about his childhood and how he was observing his mother at work and how much she multitasked and how he experienced the blue collar work. His purpose was to describe how people integrate physical and mental work is in the field and supports people in the blue collar field. I felt as if I was at a dead end job and earning nothing from it, but Mike Rose’s article influenced me that I was actually learning and gaining skills at my work place. His intended audience would be blue collared workers and white collar workers. Rose informing that blue collar workers are also educated people even though they do not have a degree.
The topic of whether or not music has an impact on studying abilities is a conversation that many people have many different opinions on. In David Cutlers article, “Don’t Listen to Music While Studying”, he tries using evidence and reasoning to support, connect, and persuade his audience. In the article, David Cutler uses pathos and storytelling to connect with his readers. In the first couple of paragraphs, Cutler explains how he likes listening to music while studying also.
Spain Elementary/Middle School in Detroit is facing an issue of missing a musician teacher. As shown in the video, “Life Inside Detroit Public Schools” the school has all the necessary accessories to have a music class or even a legitimate band. Even though it’s an extracurricular, developing student’s early interests is beneficial for youth’s future. “Being on a team, in an orchestra, or in the cast of a play typically involves being a member of a general category (e.g., soccer player, percussionist), and participants are typically given specific roles to fulfill. These experiences promote the values of universalism and specificity (respectively).”
In the article by Adam Reyher, he is describing about what I think, if music does not keep evolving and changing, music will eventually die like if sharks stop moving forward, they will die. How we teach music in classrooms, it should not be taught word for word, but it should be “embraced” and be taught the way kids want to be taught in a fun way. Since music is always changing, it should involve latest software, not only newer instruments, but technology and interactive games that also teach a student. As in video games like RockBand and Guitar Hero, we notice just the fun way of playing a fake guitar and hitting notes to gain points. We do not realize we a learning a type of beat or rhythm behind a song but not to the full extent.
Another way music helps us in school is by making us focus more, and have better memories. Most children say that music makes it easier to memorize a list like your abc’s or the numbers. Scientific research shows that pairing what your learning with rhythm or pitch helps you remember it more.
