Personal Narrative: A Career As An Audiologist

As well as the challenge of many professionals encouraging put in hearing aids, making their child “hearing impaired”. Hearing parents are usually unsure of what to do, and end up following the path the professionals recommend. The book really helps emphasize the importance of not doing that. Instead, exposing a the child into the Deaf community would be the best option. They’ll be welcomed with wide arms, and it will help them feel most true to themselves.

The strength of deaf identity may be present in parents, but by deciding against cochlear implants for children, they may be jeopardizing life and/or career opportunities in the future. One can clearly survive and function in the hearing world as being deaf or hearing impaired, but to what degree can one do so in comparison to their non-deaf counterparts? 1) Describe at least three special education services for students with impairments in sight and hearing Three special education services for students with impairments in sight and hearing are, (a) MARESA, (b) Exeter Township School District and (c) Chester County Intermediate Unit. (a) MARESA hearing and vision consultants’ work as a team with school staff to give students that are living with hearing and visual impairments the best access to tools and training so that they can successfully achieve their required educational goals. The Consultants for the hearing impaired are basically the ones that provides direct services for hearing impaired students. They are very supportive of special education or general education teachers. They also provides consultation to educational personnel on behalf of the students that are living with hearing impaired.

Before Gallaudet lived, Doctors tried to figure out why people were deaf. They would make extra holes in people’s ears and pour solutions in their ears to help them to hear, but nothing worked. The deaf culture believes that deaf people do not need cochlear implants to fit into society. They believe that deafness is not a disease and does not need to be fixed. With a cochlear implant, it is not used to fix the deafness, it is used to help with the person to give them more of a normal life and to help them have the ability to fit into society

At my physician office, the staff always dress and act professionally. I have been going to my physician since I was 6, I have even job shadowed my physician. I do not recall a time my physician or his staff has ever been unprofessional. They are always dressed in scrubs or business casual. The topic of cochlear implants is causing quite the argument between the deaf and medical community. The core of the disagreement centers around whether or not cochlear implantation should continue to be considered as an option for hearing impaired individuals to improve auditory ability.. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association a cochlear implant is “a device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the inner ear.” Proponents of cochlear implants claim that hose who are born with or later experience a problem with the sensory nerve of the inner ear have the opportunity to gain the ability to hearHowever, many are now arguing that this device is not as useful or healthy for the human ear as it has been said to be. Those who oppose cochlear implantation, namely the deaf community, view it as a threat to the deaf community and its culture.

Cochlear implants don’t take deafness away they only help to hear the world of sound. I personal want cochlear implants and hear is why you my family should consider allowing me to get them. Education, in general is such a vital part of my life, I wouldn’t be the devoted, hard-working student I am today without it; therefore, I value it greatly. Graduate education is very crucial to my career because I would not be qualified as a speech pathologist without my Master’s degree. Additionally, there are several other reasons why I believe it is important to me. One reason is that on a graduate level, I am taught more in-depth lectures regarding the scopes of practice that a speech pathologist will be expected to know and perform well in. Furthermore, I will be assigned clients and will gain clinical experience from treating clients with a variety of ages, which can contribute to me becoming a well-rounded speech therapist.

The medical view challenges fundamental cultural values of the Deaf culture by undermining the importance of establishing a Deaf identity. Since its priority is to cure “Deafness” using medical interventions, young Deaf infants often do not often have a say in the auditory recovery treatments that will ultimately define their ways of life. Doctors and scientists alike are trained to think of ways to return the body to its most natural, fully equipped state and the inability to process auditory information is alarming because it deviates from their definition of a normal, healthy human being. Although the intentions of those in the medical field are not necessary maleficent, but the way in which they explain options to parents with a Deaf child

The profession of Speech Language Pathology enables others to be heard and gives them the ability to have a voice. As a Communication Disorders major, I found my voice through education and personal experiences. During my undergraduate career, I have balanced extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and leadership roles while maintaining superior grades in my coursework. However, my qualities go far beyond my list of accomplishments. Passion, my value of education, and my objective to improve the lives of others have driven me to pursue a career in Speech Language Pathology.

Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to work in the pathology field. I thought I wanted to be a pathologist. I talked to the career counselors at my school and expressed my interest. Fortunately for me, I was contacted not much after about an internship at Montefiore Medical Center. I would come to learn that Montefiore Medical Center is the teaching hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

I am preparing for a career as a Medical Sonographer. In order to reach this goal, I have several steps that I have to complete to get there. In the below paragraphs I will discuss these steps. Along with how I think technological advances will affect my career and educational goals in both the near and distant future. The first step in my goal to becoming a Medical Sonographer, is completing an Associate’s Degree.

I watched Sound and Fury, a documentary that came out in 2000, centered on the complications of getting the Cochlear Implant, and how Deaf and hearing communities can differ upon the topic. Particularly within one family, brothers along with their wives and parents have a tough time deciding if their Deaf children should undergo such a procedure. They all travel to visit families that are hearing with children who aren’t learning ASL because they have the implant. They visit a Deaf family whose 10-year daughter is the only person in the family to get the implant. They also visit schools focusing on speech to help Deaf children who wear hearing aids and/or got the Cochlear Implant, and visit a Deaf community with a school focused on ASL.

In this assignment the author is going to be speaking about active listening and the components of active listening. Active listening is a skill that is very important when it comes to communication and the author will discuss its importance and also how it can be achieved. The author will talk about the differences between listening and active listening and why it is important to take on an active listening role. The author will lastly look at how active listening is vital for any health care professionals but yet how it is seen as not being that important of a skill to have.
