The profession of Speech Language Pathology enables others to be heard and gives them the ability to have a voice. As a Communication Disorders major, I found my voice through education and personal experiences. During my undergraduate career, I have balanced extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and leadership roles while maintaining superior grades in my coursework. However, my qualities go far beyond my list of accomplishments. Passion, my value of education, and my objective to improve the lives of others have driven me to pursue a career in Speech Language Pathology. I led twenty-two students during their first year of college to provide them success as students. I co-taught a class that focused on study skills, UNK resources, and involvement on campus. My ability to communicate and adapt to the diversity of the class was shown through creating different learning activities to employ in the classroom. I exemplified team work by collaborating with another instructor. Through my experience as a Peer Academic Leader, I was able to hold two counseling sessions with each student per semester to provide myself as a resource. I learned how to adapt to the individual needs of students to provide them the best education. Like students with a communication disorder, many of my students would shy away from activities or tasks because of obstacles. Through these experiences, I watched my students gain the confidence to participate in activities and excel in academics to become successful individuals. As a future Speech Language Pathologist, many qualities that I possess can be improved by furthering my education. As a driven person, I often strive for perfection. As clients communication disorders are diverse, your graduate program will challenge myself to overcome the constant strive for perfection. Through the experience of working as youth leader for freshman connection I have grown as a better leader. To help incoming freshman was incredible experience for me. I joined freshman connection to serve school and defiantly to get knowledge and team building skills out of it, so that it can help me make my college experience better. I have reduced my colleges down to these three because they are the only accredited colleges in the area that offer undergraduate degree programs in Communication Disorders, with post-undergraduate plans to attend the University of Louisville to obtain my Masters Degree in Speech Pathology. Being able to work with both children and adults has allowed me to broaden my view of what the field of speech language pathology will consist of. During my freshman year, in the spring semester of 2014, I was able to volunteer in Marquette’s clinic and take data for an SLP graduate student who was working with an adult with an intellectual disability. This experience allowed me to broaden my basic knowledge of the field of speech-language pathology. Also this past fall semester of 2016, I was able to work with an SLP graduate student in Marquette’s clinic, where we provided therapy to a preschool-aged client. We worked together in creating activities to target his speech language disorder, using both hybrid and clinician-directed approaches throughout the semester.

For over twenty years I taught speech therapy from pediatric to geriatric patients. I worked with to name a few strokes, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, assistive technology, and congenital disorders. I also was able to work with technology readily as I trained, built, and maintained the hospital electronic medical record. Prior to this over twenty years ago I student taught in speech therapy in Toppenish, Washington.
When someone asks me what I want to do in life, one main goal always comes to my mind. That goal is to have a positive influence, whether it’s big or small, on the world around me. This may sound vague or cliche, but it’s the truth. This is why I am pursuing a degree in speech pathology and also why I want to participate in an alternative break trip. I punched in the gate code and began driving down the dirt road; galloping horses roamed the 8 acre astonishing grounds. The commentaries of prior professors flew nearby like an old cartoon that just got whacked in the head and had birds flying around. Find a supervisor who will give you your hours and help you grow, therapy needs to be engaging, change the scenery or choose an ethical work place! These are the words I took into consideration when I was being interviewed and interviewing my supervisor. Besides viewing this process as a foundation for future knowledge and abilities, I have been anticipating this stage of gaining deeper and professional knowledge in psychology for a long time. To summarize, this goal is elicited from my passion and enthusiasm for psychology, to remain focused throughout these three years, instead of gaining fame or impress others. After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects.
