So why can’t the teens go out for lunch too? Well often times teenagers are seen as irresponsible, but this is not always the case. Off-campus lunch provides money for our community, the students mature and learn to become responsible adults, not to mention they get a nice break from their learning environment. According to the Berkshire Eagle “Open-campus lunch leads to students putting money back into the economy. I believe that the lunch menu at schools should not change to a more healthier lunch. In fact, it would most likely cause a lot of issues between parents and the school board. Students would not like the fact that all their favorite foods are gone. Also, students would start packing their own lunches at home and bringing their packed lunch to school. Some kids might just go without eating all together.
As I walked into the cafeteria, I caught a whiff of the food being prepared in the cafeteria and thought to myself, “Why can’t we go off-campus to get lunch?” While SLA, the lunch program at Catholic High, provides the school lunches, there could be an alternative solution to this. Unfortunately, students are detained at school during lunch hours and are not able to leave campus during lunch forcing them to be served by SLA or bring their own lunch. If Catholic High School were to introduce an open-campus lunch, students and faculty would benefit greatly. While SLA does provide the lunch at CHS, they do not live up to their standard of “high quality, nutritious, and cost efficient”.

In addition, there are some students that get dropped off by their family, friends or public transportation and not able to leave during the day. That means some students are bound to stay on campus and limited to the junk food in the vending machines. Poor weather could also limit the students from going out and the cafeteria could be utilized in times like this. This will take a long time because they have to have something to do with the food that they are getting rid of. If they don't have somewhere to send it then they will be wasting money by throwing it out. The cost comes into play because the schools will be paying money to get the new healthier foods into their cafeteria. The money will come back when students start buying the new food, but the school will be down quite a bit of money for a little while.

While it is understandable that some parents wouldn’t want longer lunches because it could result in safety issues and students having to remain in school 30 minutes longer than the traditional time, longer lunches would give students a chance to complete homework, get help from teachers, and eat a nutritious meal.
Imagine a school that has multiple healthy school food options, that is worth standing in line for. I think that all schools should have a healthy school lunch.
