“Whitney? Whitney! Come back! Please, not again!” Screamed Rainsford, voice hoarse from his constant cries. Rain pounded on him, and the midnight-like sea was trying to pull him into its depths. No matter what he did, those on the yacht could not her him. He continued to yell until his voice was only a whisper. After what seemed like hours of being half drowned in the ocean, a quite, accented voice whispered in his ear. The pounding rain and thrashing sea should’ve drowned out his words, but Rainsford could hear them as if they were his own thoughts. “Who shall feed the hounds tonight, Rainsford?” Rainsford woke up in a cold sweat. He could see the moon, just rising to its peak through one of the many windows. After getting up and pacing around the room, he crawled back into bed and forced himself into a restless slumber. The next morning when Rainsford …show more content…
Rainsford put on a worried expression, but beneath it lay a cruel interest in a new type of hunt. “Don’t worry, I’ve come to save you all. My name is Sanger Rainsford, but you can just call me Rainsford. I promise I will get you all away from this horrid place,” he said in a gentle voice. He had to tamp down his excitement After Rainsford coaxed all the men from their cages, seven in all, he brought them up to the dining room. He made a shoddy excuse and left the room, but none of the sailors questioned him. They were all top busy scarfing down the food Rainsford had quickly prepared for them. After nearly an hour, Rainsford found everything he had been looking for. He returned to the dining room and placed one bag in front of each man. The bags contained one set of pants, a pair of moccasins, a plain shirt, and one dull knife. After searching through the mansion he had found Zaroff’s storeroom of items he gave to his prey. There had been more in there, but Rainsford wanted to balance out their larger number and his
Rainsford knows just where to find a body sized bag, he grabs it fast and places General’s body in the bag. First he thinks to himself, does this mean I am a murderer too? No I was helping out the others by doing this. I am a good murderer.
He then wondered what to do from there and decided to jump into the sea and swim along the shore to Zaroff’s house. He had been swimming away from the hounds and soon made it to Zaroff’s bedroom to hide and waiting for him to arrive. Zaroff then finished eating and came upstairs. He went to the window then found Rainsford in the curtains and he was shocked to see him there. Zaroff then congratulated Rainsford and “Zaroff said with a deep bow, One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds.
Luckily, you and I are hunters. ”(Connel, 1). At the beginning, exposition of the story, let it be known about his hunting abilities. When Rainsford fell over the cliff, and swim instead of panicking and risking drowning. Rainsford made smart decisions during the game; always keeping
Stress and worry play huge roles in our everyday lives. But we don’t stress and worry about getting hunted like prey. Rainsford does. He is a well-known hunter who is abandoned in the ocean after falling off a yacht, and is welcome into the home of a man who also hunts, but not the same things as Rainsford. As Rainsford gets accustomed he soon learns he will become the hunted.
Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leapt far out into the sea. Once his body smacked the ocean, the waves rumbled as they viciously crashed against the rocks. Thunder crackled violently in the air.
He is writing the story from Rainsford's perspective so we get to know what he is feeling. “Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea. . . .”
While exploring the area in which he washed up on, he came across a fellow hunter who seeked not to kill animals - but Rainsford himself. “An idea that held a wild chance came to him, and, tightening his belt, he headed
Rainford exposes his selfishness and lack of empathy by saying, “‘Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes-the hunters and the huntees. Luckily you and I are hunters’”(2). His actions throughout the story show his cruelty too. Rainsfords profession is killing animals, and while he does
Then, I will trick the dogs by putting a big juicy steak into a cage so I will not have to worry about them hurting me. Now I will have to go exploring to know what I have on my island.” While Rainsford was exploring, he found many traps that were not mentioned. He also found some skeletal remains that he sent to be studied by scientists. He was beginning to think about his very nice house.
To start off, Rainsford states that he doesn’t care how hunted animals feel; he also claims that they can’t reason or feel fear. The author in this scene uses foreshadowing to get readers predicting that Rainsford might become the hunted. “Don’t talk nonsense Whitney,” said Rainsford “You’re a big game hunter. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”. “ Perhaps the jaguar does,” said Whitney.
It is a fundamental and enduring part of who we are, even in our darkest moments. Rainsford is an example of this idea as he grapples with the ethical implications of hunting other humans. As a professional big-game hunter, Rainsford’s sense of morality is initially rigid and well-defined. However, through the course of his harrowing experience on Zaroff's island, Rainsford undergoes a transformation. Moody’s quotation about character in the dark is a powerful tool for analyzing Rainsford's character in The Most Dangerous Game.
“He ran for his life. The hounds raised their voices as they hit the fresh scent. Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay feels”(36). The hounds were chasing Rainsford, just as the animals were being chased by hunter and now that Rainsford lives the fear. Rainsford is not only being chased but tracked down.
“After swimming for what seemed like forever, I heard an ear piercing sound off in the distance. I decided to swim in the direction of what I knew was a gun-shot, knowing that where there is men, there is food.” Rainsford explained. He later went on to tell about how he weakly pulled himself onto a rocky shore, knowing that he had now escaped from the tortuous waters, he went into a deep sleep.
When placed in this situation, Rainsford has transformed from being the hunter to becoming the huntee, and is now in the position of all the animals he has carelessly killed before. Towards the end of the story, while Rainsford is being hunted by Zaroff and his pack of dogs, the narrator describes how Rainsford feels by saying that: “Rainsford now knew how an animal at bay feels” (22). The sensation of extreme fear and worry had finally gotten to him, and he can relate to how the animals he hunt may
- ‘Even so, I rather think they understand one thing--fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death. ’”(Connell 18) By reading the theme the reader can infer the position Rainsford is in will drastically change. Although, Rainsford is not overtaken by the jaguar
