The mind of Rainsford The distinguishing characteristics of mind are of a subjective sort; we know them only from the contents of our own consciousness - Wilhelm Wundt. Sanger Rainsford, in the story The Most Dangerous Game showed the characteristic of being intelligent, having strength, and him being a round character. Sanger Rainsford was in a shipwreck, washed up and in the mysterious remote island ran by a general who had a “disturbed” psychological state. The general tries to swindle Rainsford by making him the prey or entrapment.Rainsford used his intelligences, strength, and roundness of a character to survive this mysterious torment. Rainsford is experienced."I'm Sanger Rainsford of New York” ( Connel, 4). “You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher.…Luckily, you and I are hunters.”(Connel, 1). At the beginning, exposition of the story, let it be known about his hunting abilities. When Rainsford fell over the cliff, and swim instead of panicking and risking drowning. Rainsford made smart decisions during the game; always keeping …show more content…
“Desperately he struck out with strong strokes after the receding lights of the yacht” ( Connel 3). “ He began to count his strokes; he could do possibly a hundred more and then--.” (Connel 3). At the beginning of the story after Rainsford fell off the boat he swam for a long period of time, with “strong stokes” effortless. “A big tree with a thick trunk and outspread branches was nearby, and, taking care to leave not the slightest mark, he climbed up into the crotch, and, stretching out on one of the broad limbs, after a fashion, rested.” (Connel 13). He climbed up a tree, that requires some amount a strength. In the climax of the story, After Rainsford jumped in the ocean and swam back to shore, regardless of the seas rough tides. Without Rainsford strength in the story he would have not won the game. As previously discussed, he is strong but he is also a round
Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General.
Readers are unaware of the thoughts inside the character’s head - it may be a dreamless sleep or flashback of his earlier life. It is difficult to be certain of the duel’s effect to Rainsford’s mind. Even at that moment, it is unclear whether Rainsford is just a tired man or an animal at
Sanger Rainsford was a very smart, successful man. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Rainsford had outsmarted General Zaroff many times but only three are: making different paths to confuse Zaroff, hiding in the tree from Zaroff when he was hunting him, and hiding in Zaroff’s bedroom curtains to kill him when he came into his room. Rainsford said to himself “I’ll give him a trail to follow” (Richard Connell) page 24, so he made many different loops and paths for him to follow. He made it confusing for Zaroff and he seemed to fall for it.
The main character in the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, endured numerous troublesome trials. The last trial he endured, in my opinion, was the hardest; giving him the chance to attack and kill Zaroff right then and there, instead choosing not to take advantage of the situation. Ultimately, he confronted and challenged him to a fair and even sword fight, the winner getting to keep Zaroff 's home while the loser was fed to the dogs. This act shows a great deal of Rainsford 's character and personality, proving to be a man of honor and fairness, with respect in this scenario. Rainsford allowed an even fight to take place, and as a result, for his actions, he won while Zaroff received what he truly deserved.
Rainsford is tested by his stability and his frailty. When he fell into the water, he had the psychological stability that he could make it to shore, and he could not give up. He also had the palpable stability to make it to shore, so he could find someone else to help him. Rainsford had the physical stability
Now in “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford has to find a way to outsmart the hunter “ The softness of the earth had given him an idea. He stepped back from the quicksand a dozen feet or so and, like some huge prehistoric beaver, he began to dig”(Connell 21). This is how Rainsford thought he could outsmart the hunter. Rainsford wanted to trick the hunter because if not the hunter would kill Rainsford because the hunter does not like to hunt normal things but humans. If Rainsford survives three days he could leave which is why he has to outsmart the hunter.
Rainsford put on a worried expression, but beneath it lay a cruel interest in a new type of hunt. “Don’t worry, I’ve come to save you all. My name is Sanger Rainsford, but you can just call me Rainsford. I promise I will get you all away from this horrid place,” he said in a gentle voice. He had to tamp down his excitement
Rainsford does anything to get away from General Zaroff. In the story :” The Most Dangerous Game” the author says “ then he leaped far out into the sea. . . .” (connell 235) This quote basically means he jumped into the ocean just to get away from Zaroff. This proves Rainsford will do anything to get away from General Zaroff.
Imagination is a light on a road that would normally be dark. It is a portal to a new universe that normally would be shut. And it is something that can be used so easily to form great works of literature off a single idea. Richard Connell uses his imagination and ours, to create a short story that is so enticing, and so captivating, that it tangles the mind of the reader into a web of suspense that can only by escaped by flipping to the next page. The way Connell holds this suspense and thrill in The Most Dangerous Game is by putting a likeable character into multiple situations of tension.
He had to struggle and swim in order to stay alive. Once he fell off, he knew he was in danger. On page 174, it says “The cry was pinched off short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head.” This is the exact moment when Rainsford’s body hit the water, and he was off the ship. Rainsford desperately tried to tell the yacht to come back,
Rainford exposes his selfishness and lack of empathy by saying, “‘Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes-the hunters and the huntees. Luckily you and I are hunters’”(2). His actions throughout the story show his cruelty too. Rainsfords profession is killing animals, and while he does
Sanger Rainsford made an important impact on the story ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ by Richard Connell through his intuition and how it added to the intensity of the story. In fact, Rainsford already had a general impact as the main character yet certain characteristics he owned doubled that impact. Naturally, Rainsford’s intuition and nearly instinctive realism made the story more engrossing for the readers by showing how he knew his physical limits while also knowing how to push his intellectual limits without exhausting himself. Furthermore, Rainsford had usually created minor controversy with his opinions which may have kept some readers interested, “The world is made up of two classes -- the hunters and the huntees”. Besides seeming to be
Rainsford is on his own in the woods with General Zaroff. General Zaroff character trait of challenging, motivates Zaroff to tell Rainsford, “you’ll find this game worth playing,” the general said enthusiastically. “[Rainsford] brain against [Zaroff]. [Rainsford] woodcraft against [Zaroff], [Rainsford] strength and stamina against [Zaroff]”(30). Rainsford now knows that he’s in this game with General Zaroff and that he’s being put to the test of hunting.
“After swimming for what seemed like forever, I heard an ear piercing sound off in the distance. I decided to swim in the direction of what I knew was a gun-shot, knowing that where there is men, there is food.” Rainsford explained. He later went on to tell about how he weakly pulled himself onto a rocky shore, knowing that he had now escaped from the tortuous waters, he went into a deep sleep.
It is now hard for him to trust anyone after being forced to be hunted. “The pit grew deeper; when it was above his shoulders, he climbed out and from some hard saplings cut stakes and sharpened them to a fine point. These stakes he planted in the bottom of the pit with the points sticking up” (Connell 34) because of this flashback Rainsford starts to get scared about himself hurting another human being. He won’t hunt again because he remembers his times of desperation and how he felt while trying to kill a living person. Another factor of Rainsford’s nervousness is when he told that the man being hunted the day before lost his head.
