Religion's Impact On The Magna Carta

The Constitution of the United States was a document that established America’s national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens. It was signed on September seventeenth, 1787 and used to replace the Articles of Confederation. The Magna Carta was a document that established the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. It was signed in 1215, issued by King John of England. The Petition of Right was signed in 1627 and was written by Parliament as a way to stop King Charles I from overreaching authority.

The first focuses on the history of the idea that America is a Christian nation. Then, he looks at the American Revolution and the role Christianity played in it. John Fea aims the last few chapters at the religious beliefs of presidents and other influential people during the first years of America. As one reads, the various points John Fea makes, they may alter his/her own viewpoint.

The earliest English colonies of the 17th century held strong religious beliefs. The different religions the colonists had, influenced and determined certain rule within a colony. Some colonies believed that religious and state rule should be combined while other colonies believed it needed to be separated. Many early english colonists believed it important to abide by religious rule and cast others out that decided to rebel against the religious norm. All of these things contributed to the way religion affected the rule in the early english colonies of the 17th century.

But in 1430 the Gutenberg press was invented and in 1508 the Magna Carta was first printed allowing for its ideas to be widespread. Its ideas were being heard across the nation and influenced the people to also question the king. At the time people then started to refer to Magna Carta whenever SOMETHING came up. The Magna Carta states that “no one is above the law”. Due process of law meant no free man could be deprived of life, liberty, or property” without legal measurements and the king could not take property or taxes without the consent of the law(?).

The influence of religion during the Reformation was a manifestation of the conflict of criticism toward the Catholic Church that shaped the events of the age. Although the peasants were primarily motivated towards economic and political justice, the Reformation introduced the German peasants to independent ideas and generated a movement against the nobility, as well as tying into the countermovement of the German peasant revolts of 1524 and 1525. Instead of seeking refuge in feudal authority, the peasants of Germany reflected religious ideas in their revolution by appealing to God’s authority. As the hold of the church's influence over society declined from the conflict of the Reformation, the leaders of the revolts optimized the growing animosity to generate support for the revolts. Religion and its various ideologies played a key role in advancing the authority of the Ottoman and Catholic Europe; it also influenced the way they confronted outside powers and people from other religions. The Ottomans where an Islamic ruled empire which brought about a certain ideology that gave them the God given rights to the earth. Catholic Europe also had this ideology from where God gave Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven and endowed upon them earth as well (Matt 16: 19). The catholic church in Europe seemed to have their hands in the cookie jar of European Medieval Government and some what controlled the kings and nobles.

Religious ideas played a central role in the way people understood and reacted to the world around them in colonial America. The colonies were founded by various religious groups seeking freedom to practice their faith without persecution. Religion influenced many aspects of colonial people's daily life, from politics and social order to economic practices and daily life. Religious ideas were not only important but often the cause of antagonism and violence in colonial America. One example of religious antagonism in colonial America can be seen in the Salem witch trials of 1692 (American YAWP, 3.5).

The balance between individual’s rights (more specifically freedom of religion and belief), local and national government are essential to America today. The colonies were heavily religious in the elementary stages of this country. Faith has influenced the migration to this country, the relationships between the European settlers and the Native Americans, and the establishment of America. Colonial culture laid the groundwork for America. Faith continues to be a huge part of American culture today.

In response to the Protestant Reformation, between the years of 1545-1563, the people of Trent constructed a council known as the Council of Trent. The main, intended purpose of the Council of Trent was to influence Protestants to return to the Catholic Church. The Catholics were determined to redefine the concepts of Catholicism in order to make them clearer than before, in hopes that this would make the Catholic Church more appealing. These actions created another movement that occurred during a similar time, known as the Counter Reformation. The Council of Trent was built in response to the Protestant Reformation; and because of this, it is known for being one of the most significant movements of the Counter Reformation.

Religion was one of the reasons why the colonies had first developed, it helped create religious freedom and allowed people to continues their religious practice without persecution. However, not all the colonies had centered themselves around religion. In the early American colonies religion had a big impact on the development in the New England, Chesapeake, and Mid-Atlantic Colonies.

Religion is a cultural universal that affects society in so many different ways. The various teachings can give explanations of things seemingly unexplainable, it can act as a way of social control, but either way religion is an integral part of American society now and it was maybe even more so in early America. In early 17th century, the Puritans came to America in a great migration to escape religious persecution and in the hopes of creating “a city upon a hill.” They established their society in New England and Puritanism dominated the area. In Puritan colonies, there was very little distinction between law and religious decrees, and this is just one of the examples of how Puritanism was the foundation of New England culture.

Rome was very significant because it controlled most of Europe and it also had a lot of european culture. Rome fell after the rulers that came in the next century, didn’t know how to deal with Rome’s growing problems and it’s giant empire, therefore Rome began to fall. There were many contributions to the fall of Rome. For example, trade was disrupted, there was limited space and they began to lack new sources of gold and silver. Some people may argue that the Age Of Faith and The Dark Ages are the best labels to describe the era between 500 and 1500 in Europe.

The Middle colonies were proprietary colonies with the exception of New York, which was a provincial colony. Religion in the Middle colonies was very diverse and the colonies were known for religious tolerance. The geography of the region provided for excellent farming, growth of livestock, and the trade of mainly raw materials for manufactured goods. As a result the economy was not centered primarily on shipping or farming but rather a mix of the two. The middle colonies were much more diverse than the New England ones with only 40% being English.
