Style is another form of rhetoric. Moving past correctness and clarity, we work with the true rhetorical side of style- appropriateness and ornament. “Appropriateness meaning to say or do whatever is fitting in a given situation”. Appropriateness would be better defined as situational propriety, like Kairos. For instance, when a person receives a call at a library, they’ll answer their phone call and the people around them will hush the person speaking on the phone. Appropriateness is when a person picks up their phone call outside of the library because it is not appropriate to speak within the library.
Another type of style is ornament. Ornament has three different styles to define it: figures of speech, figures of thought, and tropes. Ornament is best described as “enhancing persuasion and aids clarity.” Retours can study and practice using figures and tropes

This tool is beneficial to making a rhetorical argument because it allows for a greater acceptance of the argument whether the reasoning is true or not. Listeners or readers participate in constructing the argument and thus are more likely to believe it. Enthymemes can be used verbally or nonverbally. Enthymemes can also be used in visuals or in writing which makes them very common in advertising. Retours rely on a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic proofs in order to create their arguments and support them. Intrinsic proofs, (ethos, pathos, and logos) require the retour to not only “invent” their argument but also support it. Extrinsic proofs have no such requirements, they are proofs that have already been “invented” and are simply tools for the retour to use. They can be divided into two groups: data and testimony. Intrinsic proofs were utilized the most by ancient rhetoric’s in comparison to today 's modern rhetoric’s who utilize extrinsic
Now, the framework I decided to use for this article through analyzing is Lloyd Bitzer’s Rhetorical Situation. In his rhetorical situation, he explains how every situation can be analyzed rhetorically by looking at the interactions between speakers, subjects, audience and purpose. A rhetoric piece of work comes into existence for the sake of something far greater than the piece itself. In each rhetoric situation, he explains how there’s three main variables that come into play. First, you gave the exigence, which is the “reason.”
Every writer has a goal in mind when writing. For some that goal is to entertain, for others, it’s to educate. When writing, authors have many tools or tricks they use. One of the more common tools is rhetoric. There are three main components of a good rhetoric argument, ethos, pathos, and logos.
Based on the readings and videos that you read/watched during week one, how would you describe “rhetoric”? What is “the rhetorical situation” and how do you see an awareness of this concept affecting your writing and behaviors? The word “rhetoric” is considered as the art of using language effectively and persuasively in any form of communication. So, it is omnipresent in our life.
1) Of the three primary units we have completed in this course, the most challenging unit for me was the argument (persuasion) unit. I was surprised at how much I struggled both in the pre-writing process and in the writing process. To begin with, because I love arguments, I had trouble choosing a topic. In the end, I decided to challenge myself with the policy that requires sex offender to be added to a public registry policy. Instead of going with my initial stance (opposition), I decided to flip the scrip and argue the opposite of what I believe (proposition).
Aylin Reta 88729977 ARTH 1306 Christ with the Symbols of the Passion Christ with the Symbols of the Passion is a work by Italian painter Lavinia Fontana, its medium is oil on panel and it was executed on 1576. In this piece we see, what seems to be, Christ after he was brought down from the cross. He is sitting at the center of the piece with multiple angels besides him. The color palette seems dark and obscure as well as the overall mood of the piece. He is surrounded by symbols that are significant to the process of His crucifixion such as the cross, the crown of thorns, a whip, and is also surrounded by three angels.
Followed by several counter arguments to why minority students have false gains when it comes to education. In his essay, Jonathan Kozol most important feature of style discourse would be length and style, because it showed that his paper had thought and quality. It gave specific evidence that helped him ultimately achieve his purpose of writing this essay. Without the length, it would have looked as though the speaker was not fully educated about his research however, Kozol could have narrowed down his argument instead of being all over the
In the tale Gorgias by Plato, Socrates debates with four colleagues on what is rhetoric. To be able to answer if rhetoric is based on nature or convention you must first ask the question, what is rhetoric? Rhetoric stated by Socrates is the skill of making speeches (448d). Gorgias states that rhetoricians have the power of persuasions (452e). Rhetoric is having the power to persuade people in changing their opinion threw the power of speeches.
Pathos is the driving artistic proof in ceremonial rhetoric. Coretta Scott King was still mourning the death of her husband when he delivered this speech. During her speech, she references often to her husband. She targets her audience’s emotions at the beginning of her speech when she asks them to help strengthen her as she is getting through this tough time. The third artistic proof used is Logos.
J. Ben Lieberman demonstrates the strong influence of visual rhetoric in writing, stating that the “typeface [of a text] is the trader part of the tool because it determines the way the message looks—pleasant, messy, painful, meaningful—which affects the reader’s reaction the message” (“Visual Rhetoric And Document Design: Typography”). From such a description of the influence of a single type of text element, it is clear that the overall concept of visual rhetoric is not only useful, but necessary in written documents to effectively convey information as well as a intended message to an
In President Bush’s address to the nation, he uses many rhetorical devices. A rhetorical device is a literary device that is used to persuade the audience to support the argument made. Kurt Vonnegut author of slaughterhouse five, in the 1985 essay “How to Write with Style,” makes observations and recommendations for infusing personality into your work. It begins by defining "elements of style" as the unique personal qualities that you show to the reader. Vonnegut then goes on to make an argument on why we should improve our writing style. To which he says it's out of sign of respect for the reader. Basically not putting effort into your writing will make the reader will think that you care little of them.
Rhetoric is a way of speaking in a persuasive way to create an impact on the audience or have them think the same way as the speaker. The three main strategies of rhetoric speech is ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos meaning the speaker is dwelling upon themselves, pathos meaning the speaker is using imagination to create emotion, and logos meaning facts and logic is used by the speaker to persuade the audience. Socrates used logos in a way that helped him exhibit an effective speech to prove which type of knowledge is worth knowing. In spite of this claim, Socrates was truly only showing the court that he really did not know much more than his name.

Ethos, pathos and logos are the three rhetorical appeals that I use everyday. I used it in many discussions with my mom, arguments with my siblings, or just simply as asking my friend to go out at night. Since the used of it is not mentioned frequently, people often don’t know the meaning of tools and whether they had used it or not. Rhetorical tools are used in an argument, especially when you try to persuade someone with the opposite view or someone who is still shilly-shally about the issue. After the first journal I wrote, I had discover more about how to use those tools and how to evaluate it.
