The Civil War was a fundamental time in the shaping our our nation. The United States was divided, brawling over the topic of slavery. Our country was split into 2 sides: North and South. Alfred M. Green, an African American Abolitionist, delivered a speech in April 1861, shortly after the onset of the war. The Union Army had prohibited African Americans from enlisting. As a result, Green wanted to persuade fellow African Americans to prepare to join the fight. He used a variety of tactics to deliver a convincing and heartfelt speech. Green uses motivational words and phrases in his speech that show how strongly he feels about the fight, and also about the mistreatment of African Americans in the North. The audience was mainly black. The goal of the speech was to convince them to attempt joining the ranks. Green illustrates the need for hope for a better future, and the need to erase the past in order to move on. Green maintains an upbeat tone to encourage the recipients of the speech. While his passion is obvious, Green focuses on rallying the listeners, instead of using harsh diction to anger the people. In the 1960s the African Americans were freed, but did they really have all the rights they were promised? Racial conflicts were everywhere. Lyndon B. Johnson was current president and was trying to encourage congress to pass a bill called The Voting Rights Act. To influence the vote he gave the speech “We Shall Overcome.” In “We Shall Overcome” President Lyndon Johnson used ethos, pathos, logos, and other rhetorical devices such as allusions, repetition and appeals to authority to persuade congress to pass the act.

To change the world, one must use their words to give the sense that the change is for the better. Speeches by the leaders that influence today’s society and those who came before have been able to cause emotions in the people who listen or read them. To be able to make people feel things with your words is a skill necessary for those who want to change the world. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great example of someone who used their words and ability to make people feel to make a change that impacted the whole world. Words are a very powerful weapon that can be used to provoke, calm, and inspire change.
For example, when he states, “It is true, the brave deeds of our fathers have failed us,” he backs it up with, “our duty is not to cavil over past grievances.” Also, he expresses the idea that although people are saying they shouldn’t, they should fight for the Union anyway, which is another reason they might be against enlisting. Alfred M. Green’s speech encourages African Americans to prepare to enlist because of the many different methods he uses. He uses themes in his speech, patriotism and religion, to appeal to their emotions because he knew that African Americans wanted to be treated as American citizens and most of them were Christians.

He wasn’t living lavish and speaking on topics he knew nothing about. He has lived life and he was living the life of an African American. That title came with its own trials and tribulations that each of them related to.

Titled as the “I Have a Dream Speech,” he read this speech to the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom”. As a civil right mover he gave this great speech to all Americans (black and white) so that he could give off the idea of equality on the same level. Because of his crowd of mix races King made sure to make his speech imploring to all no matter what the race that they may be. Tensions rose across the country from those in support support of slavery and those opposed. Many states wanted to outlaw slavery while others adamantly defended it because it was the main institution with a high and consistent revenue. Ultimately, the disagreements over slavery are what lead to the Civil War. The country divided into an “Us versus Them” situation which lead to both sides having growing support for their views and making the groups less susceptible to an agreement. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves from confederate states.

He consistently backs up his claims with facts and examples, which signifies the importance and seriousness of the presented problems. Humans’ actions and thoughts are complex, many people spend their lives researching why people act in certain ways. In the TED Talk ‘Why we do what we do’, Tony Robbins, motivational speaker and life coach, helps people understand the reasons behind their actions in order to show how they can reach their full potential and use it to help and understand others. The rhetorical and speaking strategies used in his speech aided him in his effort to reach his audience. The ethos and pathos were very strong and bolstered his message, but his attempt at being logical did not improve the quality of his speech, and affected the extent his audience will take his message to heart.
