Sacagawea’s exploration with Lewis and Clark in The Corps of Discover Expedition made an impact on the United States and its decisions on exploration and expansion. Sacagawea was a Shoshone interpreter who greatly contributed to the Lewis and Clark Expedition .She knew some of the geography they passed through, and interpreted when the expedition came across Shoshone-speaking American Indians. Sacagawea identified roots, plants, and berries that were medicinal or edible along the journey, helping Lewis and Clark identify things about this new land. Sacagawea is a significant part of the Corps of Discover Expedition because she contributed to helping build relationships between American Indians and White Americans. Twenty five hundred dollars was used to fund the journey. Recruitment and training at the Corps 1803-1804 winter staging camp at Dubois, Illinois Territory took place while the Corps was still growing. The expedition was officially launched from Camp Wood, a place located just outside of St. Louis during the summer of 1804. The expedition traveled up the Missouri River where they constructed a place called Fort Mandan, in present-day North Dakota, their 1804-1805 winter headquarters. On November 4, 1804, while at Fort Mandan Lewis and Clark became acquainted with a woman named Sacagawea and her husband Toussaint Charbonneau. Lewis and Clark hired them to be interpreters on the expedition to ensure they could get the supplies they need from Shoshone Indians. Sacagawea spoke Hadatsa and Shoshone, where as her husband spoke Hadatsa and English. This made it easy for him to translate her words into English after she translated from Shoshone to Hadatsa, which made trading with the Shoshone a much easier task for the
