A year after the defeat of the White Sox in a World Series battle against the Reds, eight players of the Chicago team enlightened the American public of their prior involvement in illegal graft (Carnes & Garraty, 1999). According to the American National Biography, Chick Gandil—first baseman for the Sox—brought together a collation of teammates in the year 1919 with aspirations to collect bonus cash for aiding a major betting scandal (1999). The Black Sox—Cicotte, Felsch, Gandil, Jackson, McMullin, Risberg, Weaver, and Williams—intentionally abetted in Chicago’s loss of the 1919 World Series despite their present fame while seeking to earn a larger fortune (LeBoutillier, 2012). It has been 26 years since Major League Baseball banned Pete Rose from the sport for life. In February of 1989, Rose was questioned by then retiring commissioner Peter Ueberroth amid gambling rumors against baseball’s all-time hit king. Rose denied the allegations, but on April 1, 1989, the IRS seized betting slips with Rose’s name, writing and finger prints on them. MLB announced it would launch a full investigation, which resulted in a 225-page report from investigator John Dowd known as the “Dowd Report”. The report, which was the equivalent of a baseball death sentence, outlined Rose’s gambling activities in full detail.

Thinking about those shoes suddenly filled me with a sense of nostalgia as I reminisce on the old days like when I held my son for the first time and when I saw him go to college. He was one of the first African Americans to attend college everyone said it was impossible that we were nothing but the hogs that the white man created. Once he attended college there was a certain
Almost every author has a style or way of writing, and in most cases there is good reasoning behind it, and Shirley Jackson is no different. Out of all of Jackson’s work four of her short stories show some extreme similarities in her writing, and those four are “The Tooth”,” Island”,” Cauliflower in her hair”, and “The Lottery”. All of these stories start out ordinary, and end up taking a turn for the worst rather quickly, which can relate to life and how quickly life can change for the good or bad in the matter of seconds. The same can be said about how all of her characters in these stories seem to just be having a bit of bad luck, which makes the story turn for the worst. Jackson is very clever in how she does this, she never comes right

Where they've been" (Forrest Gump). This quote has never been truer for me as it has in the past year and a half. I have spent a good portion of the last year and a half in only one shoe, while my other "shoe" was actually a walking boot.
