The Millennial generation are enslaved to modern society. Millennials, similar to the slaves were born into a society that ¨¨...dealt them a bad hand¨¨(Mertz,2016). It is obvious that it is a lesser version of that but many times in Frederick Douglass's autobiography, it shows overwhelming similarities to modern-day society. Although unconventional, Millennials are a modern-day enslaved group. The mistreatment of young people must be addressed and stopped. They are more ¨enslaved¨ than humanity realize or care to notice. Technology is a main contributor to the enslavement of the Millennial generation. As stated by Ian Bremmer, ¨Millennials are the digital pioneers¨ (2016). The population has yet to see the real long term effects of technology. …show more content…
Doctors tend to pass out pills like candy. Many drug addicted millennials are not gonna turn down that opportunity. It is a travesty that they could supply the whole U.S adult population their own bottle of pills. The US is top in the world for pill distribution, these are pills that people ¨need¨ but most of the time people take pills for the side-effects of pills. People are tricked into this and most do not realize they are trapped in a vicious circle with Big Pharma. Pills are a necessity for most people so they take it as the doctor prescribes but, a lot of the time, it is way more than they actually need. ¨Of the 20.5 million Americans 12 or older that had a substance use disorder in 2015, 2 million had a substance use disorder involving prescription pain relievers and 591,000 had a substance use disorder involving heroin.¨(Opioid Addiction Facts and Figures, 2016). As the amount of pills distributed increases, so does the amount of people addicted to them. Many are not aware of the growing number of drug
Throughout the past three decades, there has been a deadly nationwide epidemic in America. Like a disease, it has continued to spread in the United States causing sickness, broken up families, and death. However, this disease cannot be treated with antivirals, nor can be prevented with vaccines. This disease is the widespread misuse of opioids and opioid variants. Opioids have become so highly addictive and abused over the last 30 years that “between 1999 and 2019, nearly half a million people died from opioid overdose, over half of all US deaths due to drug overdose” (Gardner et.
Recent reforms can curb the opioid epidemic. Yes, health care professionals have realized the complex problem and they now understand the problem and what needs to be done. According to CQ Researcher, “Experts see some progress in the fight against opioid painkiller abuse. After peaking in 2012, the number of prescriptions written for opioids declined 12 percent between 2013 and 2015, according to IMS Health, a market research company. Symphony Health Solutions, a data company that studies the pharmaceutical industry, found an 18 percent drop in that period.”
In other words, McGreal believes that corruption in various organizations created the perfect storm for the deadly opioid epidemic that now exists. Next, the author points out that American healthcare operates like a lucrative industry, which means that profit takes priority over people’s health. The author asserts that patients are given opioids because they are inexpensive, easily accessible, and highly addictive (McGreal). This means that the American healthcare system is driven by profit, and when dangerous opioids are prescribed excessively, individuals and organizations are made wealthy by innocent people’s addiction. Lastly, the author emphasizes that America is prey to this epidemic because our demanding, unhealthy culture believes that medication is the first step to feeling well.
Modern Day Slavery We will never quite understand what it was like to experience slavery. While there are many different types of slavery that exist today, such as forced labor, sex trafficking, and domestic servitude, to name a few, we are lucky to have never experienced or witnessed, the type of slavery that great American abolitionist Frederick Douglass endured. In the book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, we as readers encounter an in-depth description of the beatings that Frederick had a testimony for. We genuinely do not realize how much privilege we hold in the 21st century. Douglass saw horrifying, blood drawing, and angry beatings of his loved ones, was unaware of how old he was, was not granted an education, and so much
Within the last 22 years, from 1991 to 2013, the prescriptions written by doctors for opioids have increased from 76 million to 207 million. Opioids are a drug class that were developed originally, to treat severe pain for people who are dying of cancer or other severe illnesses. This began when pharmaceutical companies assured the medical community that people would not become addicted to opioid pain relievers. As a result doctors began to prescribe opioids more frequently. There are different kinds of opioids.
Underlying Causes: The increase in the sale of opioids is considered to be the root of the opioid crisis, as the drugs have been proven to be highly addictive. An addiction to prescriptive opioids, however, can lead to an addiction to synthetic, illegal opioids, such as heroine or fentanyl, which are less expensive and easier to acquire. In fact, in their journal article, “Associations of nonmedical pain reliever use and initiation of heroin use in the United States” Pradip Muhuri and associates discovered that “the recent (12 months preceding interview) heroin incidence rate was 19 times higher among those who reported prior nonmedical prescription pain reliever (NMPR) use than among those who did not (0.39 vs. 0.02 percent)” (Muhuri et. al). In other words, abusing prescription opioids significantly raises the chances of abusing illicit drugs, such as heroin.
First, there is alarming rise in mortality rates together with other formidable effects initiated by the anomalous use of opioid pain relievers. A study by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (2014) outlines that in 2009, more than 15,500 individuals in the United States died due to overdose on opiate pain relievers, a 300% rise in accordance with its history for the last 20 years. These alarming figures have increased the national interest regarding the climb in for script drug abuse in the United States. An additional cause is the escalating diversion of these drugs. Diversion in association with drugs implies to the illegal usage of licit dugs; and it happens when medications are counterfeit, medical records have been interfered with showing false information that a certain drug has been administered while it has actually been purloined, or when prescriptions go missing or stolen.
For less dosage of the painkillers, patients would decrease the number of opioid addiction that being said that could lead to death. As to cutting back on opioid prescriptions, there will be less of inappropriate distributing to those who would abuse it improperly. Doctors have found other medical treatments to their patients without providing opioids. Hospitals have prescribed opioids more than doctors do. According to the Baltimore Sun, "Only 20% of doctors have shown to only provide opioids.
Current Event Essay The 2016 presidential election has been one of the most prevalent events reported in the news for over a year, and it continues to be publicized by the media leading up to the inauguration of president-elect Donald Trump on January 20, 2017. This election process has been a very controversial issue in government because of the drastic differences in public opinion and the division it has caused in the public. Over the course of this semester, this topic has drastically grown and changed--through protests against Trump’s victory, recounts in close states, and lawsuits against the president-elect, to the now-issue of Trump’s possible conflict of interest between his business and his presidency.
ESA #6A Task 4 4(a) Review and evaluate building-based policies and procedures relevant to the protection of the welfare and safety of students, staff, and visitors within the selected school. Buckeye Career Center has a variety of policies and procedures dealing with safety of individuals on the property. The procedures, defined both in the public student handbook and the private safety plan, will be reviewed in that order. The first safety policy listed in the student handbook is the safety test. As BCC provides training in vocations that have inherent risks, all students must complete a safety unit at the beginning or school and pass a safety test for their lab with a 100%.

Across the world abusing prescription drugs causes more deaths than street drugs do combined (“International Statistics”). Prescription drugs are so easy to get ahold of and so easy to get addicted to. The misuse of prescription drugs have gotten out of hand. These drugs can cause unintentional overdoses easily. The misuse of prescription drugs can lead to addiction, affect the health of users in a dramatic way, and even cause death.
These pills, such as xanax and oxycodone allow people for short periods of time to withdraw from the harsh reality faced today. “Between 1997 and 2002, sales of oxycodone and methadone nearly quadrupled” (Okie). Around 15 years later and the prescription pill problem is continuing to skyrocket. Since prescription pills are dispersed out to anyone by doctors, many people do not realize that it is as much of an illicit drug as cocaine and heroin is. “Misinformation about the addictive properties of prescription opioids and the perception that prescription drugs are less harmful than illicit drugs are other possible contributors to the problem” (NIDA).
Prescription drugs (opiates only) have caused over 165,000 deaths within the last 15 years and is currently on the rise. Over 2 million Americans in 2014 were addicted to Opiate prescription narcotics. The most troubling fact is listed directly on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website: “As many as 1 in 4
Who are the millennials? The article states “they are born between 1980 and 2000—are both the 20th century’s last generation and its first truly digital one (Donnely, C., & Scaff, R). The millennials are a much larger demographic than what we know about the prior generation notably called the ‘Babyboomers’. The difference between the two generation is by no means subtle.
