Saeed Jones’s debut poetry collection, Prelude to Bruise (2016), is an essential contemporary piece of work comprised of narrative free verse’s that tackle an African-American historical past that is present in our existing society. During the 1960’s African American Studies began to be implemented in American universities due to the Civil Rights Movement and the rise of Black Nationalism (penguin dictionary). While the title of the collection implies the commencement of bruising and its inescapability, the growth of the poems throughout indicate steady progress in our society. Much of the collections focus is on historical contexts of Jones past and beyond, integrating brutality, race, violence and power. An African-American Studies reading of the collection reveals that the brutal past of African-Americans still weighs on modern society. Jones’s imagery combines the physical environment and historical precedents to explicitly present the relationship between slavery and its aftermath, from the perspective of African-Americans. Imbricated throughout this collection are key mechanisms set to reveal how the natural world and the world of racism, in fact, coincide with one another. These in turn empower the speaker’s growth, enabling “I’s” and “Boys” ability to depart from boyhood and enter the world of man. Therefore, beginning the prelude to bruise.

An Unfolding of Robert Hayden’s “Names” Throughout the history of Black culture in America, poet Robert Hayden represented Black history explaining and illustrating it through his poetic works. Although it is one of Hayden’s lesser known works, Names, is an extremely powerful poem that takes the reader on a journey of the trials and tribulations of slave life in America. “Once they were sticks and stones I feared I would break my bones,” provides a concise opening line as Hayden utilizes this idiom to relate the situation of the speaker to something that the reader can relate to. Hayden continues in the first stanza to explain a situation in which slaves feared “Four Eyes,” meaning a slave owner.
Frederick Douglass was an influential African American author, writing about the realities of African Americans stuck in slavery and the internal as well as external dilemmas they faced, capturing powerful messages within his works. Walton juxtaposes the depressing poem about the caged bird and the photo of seemingly happy African Americans to set up a contrast between African Americans’ reality, and what white Americans believe was their reality. Douglass can clearly see the injustice of black women’s condition in the plantations, and tells their stories to evoke emotion in the reader, and to make the reader experience the horrors and corruption of slavery in black families. It is the ways that black women are denied rights that breaks families. Douglass starts off by telling his story of how he is ripped from his mother when he is just a baby. Bruises can be caused in many ways such as a traumatic injury, like a fall or an impact on the skin. Some people are easily bruised as the skin is weakened over time. So, age is a factor in if you bruise easier or not.
The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows the imbalance of power between slaves and their masters. In his book, Douglass proves that slavery is a destructive force not only to the slaves, but also for the slaveholders. “Poison of the irresponsible power” that masters have upon their slaves that are dehumanizing and shameless, have changed the masters themselves and their morality(Douglass 39). This amount of power and control in contact with one man breaks the kindest heart and the purest thoughts turning the person evil and corrupt. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and Bessie Head’s “Prisoner Who Wore Glasses” are two literary examples that represent society’s struggle with racial inequality through the decades. 1. Scansion and Analysis The Harlem Renaissance was a period of revolutionary styles of music, dance, and literature that presented the hardships and culture of African Americans. The “Trumpet Player,” by Langston Hughes portrays the theme of the therapeutic effects of music through the development of an African American trumpeter’s music. The free verse poem “Trumpet Player” epitomizes the Harlem Renaissance and Jazz through the unique use of inconsistent rhymed and unrhymed lines mixed with the use of colloquialisms.
