Gender Equality Throughout America’s history, women have struggled to obtain basic human rights, gender equality, and general respect from men. These issues continue on into our current day-to-day life and will seem to continue for many years to come. In American literature, there are two women, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth, amongst many, who voiced their struggles as women in America. Stanton’s piece, “Declaration of Sentiments”, is a revised version of the “Declaration of Independence”, and it outlines the many rights women have been withheld from.

As women, centuries ago, they have always been expected to do a certain things throughout their lives, such as being around their children the majority of the time or maybe just maintain the house. For all this time, society established a sort of misplaced control over their lives. Recently, however, this has changed; a new generation of society was born which started to accept women for who they are. Many women fought for their rights as well as a change of living for not just themselves but for everyone. Now, as a new dawn breaks, women can be seen in the seats of power and responsibility which they were wrongfully denied for generations.

In her speech, “Women’s Rights are Human Rights,” First Lady Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton discusses the importance of fighting for women’s rights, as she argues they and human rights are one and the same. Clinton uses rhetoric, such as logic, empathy, and credibility, along with some propaganda to convince her audience of her point. The speech was given at the Fourth World Conference on Women on September 5, 1995 in order to convince people to stand up for women throughout the world and to respect their roles in society. Clinton supported women’s rights long before her speech. She had always been involved politically, first by being the president of the Young Republican’s club at her school (Harris).

Today, most would think that all humans have equal rights. Unfortunately, though, women are still not treated as equal as men. Women do not get paid as much as men do, they are expected to stay home and take care of the children, and they do not have as many job opportunities as men do. All of this is in spite of the fact that women have been fighting for their rights in this country since the 1800s. Two of the most widely known speeches are “Ain’t I a Woman” and “Speech at Seneca Falls Convention.”

As mentioned before, many feel as though women still face discrimination in the workforce. However, it is no question that attitudes towards the feminist movement have become less critical overtime. In fact, 51% of men and 69% of women currently identify as feminists, according to the 2015 poll by YouGov. Many celebrities have pushed for women’s rights, which has contributed to its recent acceptance. Overall, there were several components to the rise of the women’s rights movement in the period 1940-1975.

Being a feminist by any means is not an easy task. Society still doesn’t understand the essence of feminism, and the true meaning of it. Everyone whether they are black, white, rich or poor is entitled to their humans rights. Therefore, it is an inhumane and unjust atrocity when millions of people around the world are denied their basic human rights based on exactly these physical, shallow, insignificant differences that outline sharp social status ' in our society. How does this all relate to modern day issues? While the aforementioned essay within her book was not necessarily written all too long ago, feminism has changed and adapted to fit in with younger generations. As of right now feminism is currently quite the hot topic throughout the media in both western regions as well as more conservative regions. Oppression continues to remain hidden within “chivalrous” behaviors and ideals as presented by male dominated institutions that attempt to make decisions on behalf of women. Take for example, the war on Planned Parenthood and female healthcare.

This quote by professor, Kyle Morford, makes women rethink about what rights they have and what the future holds for them. These concerns arose after the Republican Presidential nominee,Donald Trump, won the presidential election. Women feel that the conservative candidate may eliminate or jeopardize all the rights women have worked to earn (site). Some individuals argue that women’s rights are not at stake, instead, they claim that women cannot live independently, without the government support.

The Rhetoric of “We All Should Be Feminists” Novelist, Chimamanda Adichie lectured an audience on why we all should be feminists. Feminists are people who believe in the social, political, and economical equality of the sexes. Adichie describes a couple of times when she was called or implied herself to be a feminist. Adichie’s focus in the lecture was feminists but her main focus was feminists in Nigeria because that is what and where she knows.
