The theoretical background most suitable for framing my research question is the symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism views human behaviors the creation of meaning through social interactions with those meanings conditioning subsequent interactions. This theory focuses on the individual level and is a micro theory. A micro theory is aimed at understanding the social life at the intimate level of individuals and their interactions. The authors associated with this theory are George Mead, Charles Cooley and W.I. Thomas. The name was coined by Herbert Blumer who was actually a student of George Mead. Blumer specified that this theory was based off of three basic principles. The first stating that humans act toward things on the basis of the meanings that things have for them. The second stating that the meanings of things derive from social interaction. The last being that these meanings are dependent on, and modified by, an interpretive process of the people who interact with one another. Some view it as a whole while others break into pieces. When I say pieces, I mean they break it down and recognize it on certain aspects. Some view it as only hyperactive-impulsive while others view it as only being inattentive. ADHD is very common and the symptoms our patient, Kevin, is experiencing are in line with the symptoms used to diagnose it. More specifically, Kevin’s symptoms are matching the combined classification of ADHD. As a general diagnosis, ADHD is a very common disorder, and can be classified into three types- Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined. Inattentive ADHD is the type where the patient is easily distracted, a common stereotype (albeit true) of ADHD patients. This type is generally associated with lack of attention to detail, careless mistakes, failure to keep on task (being easily distracted), and being forgetful.
The subtle but accepted social norms can be categorised neatly into two categories; folkways and mores. While both of these are informal social rules; folkways carry almost no punishment, although, mores are rules that when broken reap heavy consequences. The study of social norms is best done under the symbolic interactionalism lens. Symbolic interactionalism allows us to look at society on a micro level, meaning, we are able to focus on individuals, particularly, emphasizing verbal and physical gestures and how we interpret them.
