In the book The book long way down had many hidden messages and symbols that had meanings or messages that were used later on in the story. The long way down had many different messages, three of them were the time on the top corner of the pages, The middle drawing “ calling to him” the theme of revenge and ALIVE = A VEIL. Therefore the book Long Way Down is a book that uses symbols and signs to perpetuate gun violence and how life isn't easy for those who are stuck in the hood. First when Will first got into the elevator there was a timestamp of the time that was passing by in the elevator. At first you might not think too much about it, but slowly as you're reading the story you realize that the “conversations' ' they are having are happening in such a short amount of time. Between the first and last time he got into the elevator only 1 minute and 7 seconds passed. It symbolizes that everything that was “happening in the elevator” was fake . As the time starts to tick more and more , more of those people who are supposed to be dead start entering the elevator for a short amount of time. That's when we realize that Will isn't actually talking to these people he shows this by saying” buck thought you were dead”, or “my pop died from a broken heart”. The time is symbolizing that all …show more content…
He further says “the middle drawer is calling to me”. Symbolizing there's something in that draw that can help him with shawn. It was saying violence was calling to him. I think the writer was trying to show kids getting pulled in the streets. Most of the time they feel like they don't have a choice and they feel like they have to resort on gun violence. It was also foreshadowing that will vs going to take the gun and take revenge for shawn by using the
I feel like this really symbolizes the Boy “holding the fire” and being good, no matter what he loses in the situation or how bad life is at this moment. Another example of symbolism in the book is when the Man states that “Good dreams
This shows how Will is intelligent and can put pieces together. He realized what his mom wanted him to do without her saying it out loud. He also had an idea of what would happen to all of them if they got caught sneaking the family into the home.
The poet, Lascelles Abercrombie once said, “There is only one thing which can master the perplexed stuff of epic material into unity; and that is, an ability to see in particular human experience some significant symbolism of man 's general destiny.”. He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society, she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
The symbols in A Long Way Gone help the reader create connections to Beah’s life during the events of the book. These symbols illustrate his emotions and his view on life. Beah uses the symbol of his rap cassette to depict his childhood. In chapter one, we learn how Beah and his friends were introduced to rap music and how much it impacted them. “The four of us sat there mesmerized by the song … After that, we can to the quarters every other weekend to study that kind of music on television.”
Will is trying to follow these rules, but he runs into problems when people give him reasons not to. Mikey Holloman (dad) has the biggest impact with stating important things; for example, he makes Will question if he has the right person; what if someone comes for him after killing this guy? Will he be able to handle it? Mikey also uses his own experience for getting revenge for his brother’s murder; he tells Will how he was 100% sure he had the right person but ended up killing an innocent person. They
Will is dead because he is seeing dead people and at the end he went to get out of the elevator to go to the afterlife. Will is dead because he’s seeing all of his dead relatives at one time in the same place. At this moment in the novel, Will has just got to floor seven and a man got on. Will thinks he recognizes this man from somewhere and it ends up being his dead Uncle Buck.
One day, she got killed by a nearby shootout while they were playing, which ultimately altered Will's entire childhood and life. It impelled Shawn to teach him about the "rules "and adulthood because his childhood was already beginning to collapse on itself. The reason is that he just witnessed his best friend dying in front of him and described it as, "Her eyes wide, / the brightness dimming. / Her mouth, open.
In the book Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds I believe that Uncle Mark influenced William Holloman the most. William Hollomanis 15-year-old teenager in an urban neighborhood. Will is sensitive, perceptive, and loves language, but he also desperately wants to grow up and be a man like his dad, Pop; his Uncle Mark; and his big brother, Shawn. Shawn was a huge role model to Will and on one fatal day, it happened! BANG!
Before the death of Shawn, he told Will the story of how their dad “was killed for killing the man who killed our uncle” (Reynolds, 2017, pg 203). This evidence illustrates Mikey's downfall as analogous to the situation Will is currently in. Will is in pursuit of revenge against Riggs, his brother's alleged murderer. Based on Mikey’s path, Will’s quest for revenge will eventually lead to his demise. It is a valuable lesson for Will as he battles the cycle of revenge.
Will said that Shawn was the King which he wouldnt have said if he didnt look up to him. In the quote it shows that Will thought Shawn was cool bu the way he talked about him, not just in this quote but throughout the
Will’s father then tells Will that he finds out the person he shot wasn’t the person that killed Uncle Mark, but just some guy that acted all tough. He shot the wrong person, which might also explain why he felt extremely guilty after killing Gee. As a result, Will states “staring at my father who/wasn't my father at all./At least not like I had imagined him./A man who moved with precision,/patience, purpose,/not no willy-nilly/buck-bucking off/at randoms/at random./Spent my whole damn life/missing a misser./That disappointed
One big way to improve Will’s communication is to deal with the relationship violence that occurred to him. Sean started this for him in the scene where he tried to get Will to see that his upbringing was not his fault. This was a big step for Will to understand himself and how he should see his relationships. Through Sean, Will also learned some emotional understanding of himself. Emotional understanding will allow him to have emotional competence.
During the film Will demonstrates anger as well as irritability in a short tempered manner. In a particular scene, Will becomes overwhelmed with anger after encountering an old classmate who bullied him in preschool. Such anger and irritability caused Will’s mind to become blocked during the violent act in which Will also assaults an office. The incident ultimately leads Will unraveling the root of the
“ Don’t matter” I said “ Don’t matter. '' Will repeating himself could be seen as him trying to reassure himself because he knows he is not capable of getting revenge. Also because Will is most likely not mentally stable due to the fact his brother who he was very close to, just got killed. Revenge is like pig’s blood or chilled monkey brains, it is best served cold. However Carrie serves it
The message of inner evil is portrayed throughout the book by the destruction of the conch, terrifying beast, and character developments to establish the hidden message throughout the novel. For instance, at the beginning of the novel, the conch symbolized order and power.
