Gun violence is a constant problem in the United States of America. It has affected society and out youth negatively in the past and will continue to affect the country as a whole if nothing is done about it. The country is in mourning due to the recent influx of gun violence related crimes. There are common-sense reforms that either side can agree on. These include improvements to backgrounds checks, revisions of the Second Amendment that accommodate the modern innovations to firearms and reinstating the Center for Disease Control's research on gun violence. Gun control reform can be widely improved with these changes. Background checks in America are very lackluster. Background checks do not always apply to every state, and some with loopholes …show more content…
The Center for Disease Control is not needed in this argument, as gun violence is a ethics issue, not a biology issue, the Second Amendment has been clarified over the years by the legal system many times in court cases, and, lastly, background checks do not affect gun violence enough to change the outcome. The Second Amendment has been updated by word of mouth over the years many times, many of these cases occurring in court. In the Presley v. State case, it was found the Second Amendment does cover the keeping of handguns (Sawchuck 16). The fact that it is clarified several times over the years shows its no longer out of date. Background checks do not account for illegal purchases of firearms. The fact that guns can be bought illegally nearly anywhere in the country would not be affected by the addition of new background checks. The Center for Disease Control has no business stating their opinion when it comes to gun control it will not make a difference. The Center for Disease Control releasing their findings would not affect the current spike in violence and is not necessarily needed for the debate (Rosen 61). However, the Center for Disease control is still a health organization and should have a say in violence relating to harming people, and the Second Amendment itself is the issue it is not clear nor is it updated throughout the proceedings of court cases, and the background checks are to remove guns from minors only at this
This bill would add more people to the criminal background check database, which would stop poeple on the list from buying a gun. It would also make it so every gun purchase would require a background check. This would close the gun show loophole, where you can buy a gun at a gun show without a background check, but need a background check to buy a gun at a store. Proponents want this to pass to keep criminals from getting guns more easily. It is too easy for a criminal to buy a gun at a gun show, at some criminals are not on the list of those with criminal backgrounds that should keep them from buying a gun at store.
It says in the constitution itself. If someone wishes to get a gun, they can get a gun. Prohibiting them or placing stricter laws will be of no benefit. While conducting background checks on individuals who wish to purchase a gun does have some rationale to it, it could make any law abiding American look like an unstable psycho for committing a simple act with no mal intent. For example, say a friend
The Bill of Rights is something the American people hold close to them, especially their right to bear arms. Recently there has been a lot of debate over implementing gun regulations without infringing on the rights of the people. While a position of this is expressed in Wayne LaPierre’s “Universal Background Checks Mean Gun Registration, Gun Bans and Confiscation”, Jeffrey Toobin’s “So You Think You Know the Second Amendment” provides a more valid position evaluating the issue of gun control. Universal background checks are a big discussion lately in our country’s current climate.
Proponents of more gun control laws believe that the Second Amendment was intended exclusively for militias, that gun restrictions have always existed, and that gun regulations would prevent criminals from possessing firearms. However, Opponents claim that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own guns, that guns are needed for self-defense, and that gun ownership helps to dissuade crime. Because of this obvious difference, proponents of stricter firearm regulation demand more laws to help prevent mass shooting, and want reform in the area of background checks. Meanwhile, opponents of gun laws often accuse the proponents of manipulating a mass tragedy in order to further strengthen their fight. Gun ownership has been a tradition within the united states since before the country itself was formed.
Since this system has been in effect, more then 2.4 million potential buyers have been denied. That is a huge number that may have saved countless lives and is definitely the type of procedures we need in this country to help gun violence decrease. The problem that arises is that the country needs to stop dividing on the debate of banning weapons and start taking the right steps to make sure that guns don’t end up in the hands of the wrong people. Only around sixty percent of gun sales use background checks.
(Richards, Paragraph 4) With the system being like this it leaves for a lot of loopholes for the criminals and their helpers to get through to purchase a gun. Stricter background checks in gun shows and online websites would make for a safer gun buying experience because a person will know who is getting the gun that is being sold. The people that do not want this, say it is harder for them and takes more time to go through the process of getting a gun, but if they know they have a clean record then what do they have to lose? A stricter background check should not affect anybody but the bad people and criminals that do not have any business with guns anyway. In a separate study, “Webster found that firearm-related homicides in Connecticut dropped 40 percent after the state adopted a 1995 law that required anyone seeking to buy a handgun to apply for a permit with the local police, complete at least eight hours of safety training, and be 21 years old.”
“A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that "legal purchase of a handgun appears to be associated with a long-lasting increased risk of violent death"(-https://gun-control.procon.org/). There is such a thing as an unlicensed dealer selling handguns without a background check and proper documentation and it is legal. Those gun buyers are mainly causing chaos with mass shootings and yet others think the Second Amendment defends the right to own a weapon for “self-defense”. It is time for tougher gun control laws; the safety of the citizens depends on a safe environment free of guns from those using them for villainous purposes such as mass shootings or homicides.
In short, background checks are a solution to preventing gun violence by ensuring that firearms do not end up in the hands of those who are legally prohibited from owning
Having background checks are good to prevent violent offenders from buying weapons but there again it does not prevent them from getting weapons. It may slow down the process but it does not eliminate the process. With the long wait times for citizens to receive their guns the criminals are receiving their weapons quicker and have an advantage over the law abiding citizens. Gun control laws actually help criminals.
There have been previous laws like The Brady Law instituted in 1993 that made a federal background check a requirement before an individual could purchase a gun (Kleck). Federal background checks are still being used today and the Legislature has agreed to pass an amendment that provides more funding for even stronger background checks. In 1994 President Clinton passed a law that banned semi-automatic weapons for civilian use (Kleck). This is still an ongoing issue today because semi-automatic weapons are readily available and have yet to be banned. There is no question that both parties are searching for answers, but the question remains how will the House make all Americans
Gun rights are backed up by the Constitution which is the foundation of our country, gun control wouldn 't stop crime, and the use of background checks plays a vital role when purchasing firearms. The second amendment gives citizens of the United States right to own weapons. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (United States Constitution - Bill of Rights - Amendment II ). The District of Columbia law bans gun possession by making it a crime to carry an unregistered
This research shows me that if there was more gun control where only the people who got a positive result after checking the background and all the info they needed to be able to have guns, then we would have less gun
According to the ATF, there are approximately 55,000 licensed gun dealers in the US plus 8,000 pawn shops with licenses to sell them. With so many stores to sell these guns, it makes it almost impossible to control them each. Who knows how many of these stores lets anyone get away with a gun without a license or background checks. This goes into the idea that these shop owners should also go through a background check and license renewal every year or so, to guarantee genuineness. Not only is it the type of situation which can’t be cured entirely, it can be slowed down, which is why we need better precautions for people buying these
Loopholes are another part of this grand argument, used by the side opposed to gun control, saying that loopholes are impossible to close, while the pro gun control side argues that stricter gun control and background checks make these loopholes not an issue. Both sides can be easily argued, but there is only one side that can save countless lives. Stricter gun control will work to pr otect citizens by limiting gun violence, keeping Second Amendment rights, and closing gun loopholes. Gun control and background checks go hand in hand, as background checks act as an aid to enforce safety. Background checks significantly curb gun
Gun Control Gun violence has been affecting and destroying lives around the United States. Millions of deaths have been caused due to the lack of enforcement regarding gun control. In order to address gun violence and eradicate shootings, homicides, and suicides I propose a deeper background check on dealers who exceed a certain number of sales per year. In America, it is important to recognize that the majority of people gain their firearms illegally.
