Deforestation is the removal of a forest or large area of trees, so that the land or trees can be used for a commercial use. Deforestation started because people began living in wooded areas; however, where these trees laid was needed for commercial purposes, like the area for more houses, farms, or even for the development of new infrastructure. Deforestation may seem as harmless as cutting down a few trees, but in actuality, deforestation can lead to the destruction of the world’s most valuable natural resource. The cutting down of these large areas of trees has many negative impacts that can affect the planet forever. Now, some may argue that deforestation is completely necessary because more land space is needed. More land space is needed …show more content…
Ending deforestation is the only way people can conserve wildlife and protect the forest communities as a whole. If deforestation is abolished, this would also be the quickest and most effective way to put an end to global warming. If a company has the power to destroy a forest, then they also have the power to save one. A company can do something as simple as applying a policy that forbids deforestation, which would clear up their supply chains by holding their suppliers accountable for producing commodities like timber, beef, soy, palm oil, and paper in a way that avoids deforestation and has a minimal impact on the climate. Also, anyone, from large companies to small families, should invest in recycled products, such as recycled wood or paper. According to the article “Solutions to Deforestation”, “Forests around the world have been home to Indigenous peoples for tens of thousands of years. Evidence shows that when Indigenous peoples’ rights to traditional lands and self-determination are respected, forests stay standing. But too often, corporations and governments overlook or intentionally trample the rights of Indigenous peoples” (1). In making this comment, this article shows that deforestation does not only hurt the environment, but it is also pushing Indigenous people out of their land. Ultimately, using more recycled products and eating sustainable food, people can all contribute to the movement towards zero deforestation, protecting people from all of the said …show more content…
Deforestation is greatly impacted by human activity that has taken place over the past several years, because humans have had the greatest negative impact than any other species on the planet. Deforestation also affects the climate, with a danger of having a greater amount of carbon dioxide than can be maintained for human life. If people start to consider the preservation of the forests, the forest can still be used as a resource, as long as it is used in sparse amounts and only if it is absolutely necessary and does not contribute to a negative effect of deforestation. Deforestation puts the thousands of species that live in forests in danger, because without their natural habitat and source of food, a species will not be able to survive. Deforestation puts a huge negative impact on the global life of everyone as a whole and sets up future generations up for a terrible havoc on the planet and the ecosystem. The future of this planet must be taken care of and given the opportunity to thrive. In order for this to happen, and for the future of mankind to thrive, deforestation must come to an
As an economics major, we are often trained to believe that real, societal change can only be achieved through a top-down approach. The field of economics, particularly macroeconomics, emphasizes the scale and importance of market mechanisms and government fiscal and monetary policies in addressing societal issues, as well as environmental problems. This perspective creates the belief that significant change can only be attained through large-scale, top-down methods. I, myself, was a strong believer of this mindset. From a young age, I have always been interested in environmental science and have written many research papers and projects on issues such as deforestation and habitat destruction, particularly in the Amazon rainforest.
Deforestation is still an unbeleafable issue even to this day. With our trees being cut down to make supplies and furniture, we struggle with keeping our ratio of trees being destroyed and trees being planted equal. It seems like that was also the case in the past. There was a significant amount of trees being cut down in 1920, the land looking much more barren than it did in 1650 (Document A, map). These trees, some of them taking more than three thousand years to rise tall, are being cut down.
Michael Boydstun ENVS 101-1998 Environmental Impact of deforestation In the Pacific Northwest The first people to explore the wilderness in what is now Oregon and Washington documented beautiful forests of mesmerizingly large trees as far as the eye can see. The explorer’s initial reports brought in people who came to make a profit off the forest and the vast amounts of lumber it could provide. Lumber mills were built before the area was even added to the union. The environmental footprint started out small, but the lack of regulation, lack of enforcement of the existing regulations, and an increase in technology quickly created a large environmental battle over the whole region.
When this happens it causes adverse effects on the environment. It can be done in a variety of ways from cutting to burning. Either way mass deforestation is bad and needs to stop before it is too late. One culprit of our deforestation is
Subject- Deforestation affects majority of the population, including people and animals, across the nation and in my community. Situation or Problem- Deforestation is the action of eliminating trees, in forests, by cutting them down. The objective of deforestation is to create more land for construction and land establishments with the idea of not restoring thee trees back or replacing them. How it affects my community- Deforestation can disrupt the homes of many animals, including birds and fish.
Thank you Aunt Bessie for giving me the opportunity to learn about the progressive era and letting me give your money to the three reforms I chose. I was very intrigued when I started researching about these four progressive reforms. Some things I found out were atrocious and the others just plain out disgusting. Although women 's suffrage is a huge issue, deforestation, child labor, and food safety struck me the most deserving. The progressive era was a time from about 1900 to 1920.
Deforestation has been a big problem in Canada for many years. Destruction of forests began somewhere around 1880’s specifically in British Columbia. It went all the way to 1990’s where 64,000 hectares were lost, however that quantity has decreased in 2012 to about 45,800 hectares. Today, Canada’s 348 million hectares of forest lands shows about 9% of the world’s forest cover, although account for 0.3% of global
When deforestation occurs, the wood of trees releases extensive amounts of carbon dioxide that only adds onto the greenhouse effect. An example of deforestation comes in the form of urbanization and the act to industrialize further within a country. In the last thirty years, India’s forest only covers 21 percent of the nation (23,716 Industrial Projects, 2016). Based on governmental information and data, lands are being curbed aside in order to organize commercial projects. These acts aren’t just happening in India.
It would therefore be more realistic to encourage all parties involved in the process of deforestation to manage the resources of the forest in a sustainable way. This means that the usage of the methods of clear-cutting and burning would have to be eliminated if the forest ecosystem is to be able to remain intact. If certain trees need to be cut down, however, then theses should be replaced by enough young trees which can fill the same role to an equal extent as the ones which are cut down. Here it’s important to acknowledge that it’s impossible to eliminate deforestation completely since the growing population puts a high demand for more land which is used for agricultural purposes. Therefore the solution must include keeping a balance between deforestation and efforts of reforestation, sustainable management of forests and respecting the integrity of protected
People seeking to acquire riches and increase their wealth are more the willing to remove the perceived minimal societal gains from the forest resources in order to realize their monetary goals. The issue is not when an event of this kind happens just once. This deforestation becomes a problem when this happens thousands of times to the point where millions of acres are cleared. Half of the world’s tropical forests, which are about 3 million square miles out of the original 6 million square miles, have now been destroyed. Scientists have predicted that if we maintain our current rate of deforestation, that in 2030 there will only be 10% will remain (Nielsen
While logging can generate economic benefits and meet global demands for wood products, unregulated and illegal logging practices contribute to deforestation and habitat destruction. Responsible logging practices, such as selective logging and reforestation initiatives, can help mitigate the negative impacts on the rainforest. Settlers are individuals who migrate to the Amazon region in search of land for agriculture, often practicing slash-and-burn farming techniques known as "slash-and-burn agriculture. " While they aim to build a new life and feed their families, large-scale deforestation occurs as a result of these practices. Balancing the needs of settlers with conservation efforts is a significant challenge in the
Overview of Deforestation Deforestation comes in many forms including, clearing for agriculture, clearing for infrastructure, fires and logging for timbers. Deforestation impacts the livelihoods of many plant and animal species. When we remove the forests we are effectively making the climate change issue bigger because we have no way to soak up the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
With deforestation being one of these roles because when we chop down these trees and plants of where animals habitats our it also releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the air. And if you didn’t know forests are major carbon storage centers, when deforestation happens all the carbon dioxide that is stored in these forests; is released back into the atmosphere. Deforestation not only contributes to changes in the climate, it also causes localized changes in the weather. Trees transpire, or release water into the atmosphere, during photosynthesis. This water replenishes clouds and maintains rainfall.
Sustainable forest management requires three major criteria which are the maintenance of ecological processes within the forest (soil formation, energy flow, biogeochemical cycles (carbon, nutrient and hydrological cycles), maintenance of biodiversity of forest, improving the net social benefits derived from the mixture of forest uses within the constraints by considering the future. Forest provides habitats for more than half of the fauna and flora on the Earth (SCBD, 2001). Forest biome plays an important role in mitigating climate change by serving as carbon sinks (Hassan et al., 2005). Forest land is the most fundamental natural resources which become reduced mainly due to anthropogenic pressures. For proper management of land, it is essential to have information about existing land cover and about the naturalness of the land.
Hence, deforestation increases. This is another effect of overpopulation that impacts the worsening of the environment [2]. For example decreased forest size increases the amount of carbon in the environment. More specifically, deforestation affects the wildlife and results in biodiversity loss and species extinction [1].
