The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a peculiar story about the universe and aliens. It starts out with Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect on Earth however, Earth soon gets destroyed by aliens and they have to catch a ride on a spaceship. Arthur and Ford experience many adventures together such as arriving the the Heart of Gold. Adams brings up many deeper meanings and questions while using comedy in order to describe his characters. He uses many different techniques to make the reader laugh yet question ideas from the book. The characters have different personalities and thoughts that make them unique.

First of all, Ford was dropped off on earth and ended up staying there for 15 years. He gave himself the name, Ford Prefect and named himself after a car. Obviously trying to make it less noticable that he wasn 't from earth. Douglas Adam describes Ford as someone who if they were given the choice to save the entire universe or go to a party, Ford would choose to go to the party. Ford is suppose to be a guide or mentor but is not very effective. Instead of helping Arthur along the way, he gives him a book that he is suppose to read through and understand. Ford always wants to be the “cool” one. He is always trying to remain relaxed during problematic times. Adams makes Ford out to be a very ironic character which makes him funny. For example, Ford Prefect’s name looks so close to “perfect” that it reminds us just how Ford is far from being perfect. Also the definition of a prefect is someone who has control of certain space. This emphasizes how Ford, infact has no power and also so no particular area to call his own. He is a hitchhiker, therefore the complete opposite of a …show more content…
Douglas Adams uses many different techniques to make this character comedic and absurd at the same time. Many readers would think that Arthur Dent becomes the hero in the end and saves the universe. This however is the complete opposite of what he accomplishes. Arthur is not the type of character who would do something to benefit others. He is very blunt about difficult situations. For example, on page 117, paragraph 7, Arthur says “ So this is it, we 're going to die”. This is an example of how Arthur does not go out of his way for others or himself and is willing to accept fate. Arthur likes to use humor to deflect difficult or scary situations. He says "Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?" (24.45). He makes lots of jokes when he doesn 't know how to deal with challenges. Trillian is the peace-maker. While Marvin wants to bring everyone down and Zaphod is trying to blow everything
Arthur from "The Seventh Most Important Thing" by Shelley Pearsall demonstrates the traits of kindness, forgiveness, and curiosity. The reasons I personally think this is the case are that he was very forgiving to his mother, even though she threw out his dads belongings that meant a lot to him, and I think he is kind because he still does things for his mom. I think that he is also curious because even though he doesn't have to, he still wants to learn more about many things in his life. Textual evidence that supports my claim of why he is curious is when the text said "The purpose of the Seven Most Important Things still bugged him", which shows that he is a little annoyed but also curious about why the Seven Most Important Things must be
Arthur wanted to confess his sin but felt that the disappointment that the people would express would crush him. He tells Roger Chillingworth “’Perchance,’ says Mr. Dimmesdale ‘He earnestly desired too but could not’”(149). His relationships with himself and others changed. The book states “Therefore above all else he loathed his miserable self.”(165) meaning that his relationship with himself changed.
The presence of magic shows up early in his life, and almost right away young Arthur begins to learn life lessons from the experiences he lives through via magic. The stories that Arthur experiences through the magical journeys he embarks on have twists, turns, and
At first Arthur is very upset at hearing this answer, but over the course of the book he comes to accept it. He gradually realizes the same thing that Adams is attempting to get the reader to realize: taking the universe seriously will get you
“Oh Brother Where Art Thou”, released October 19th 2000 is a Crime/Adventure film filled with some action and lots of song. The adventure in the film is led by Ulysses Everett McGill, a man of many words and some excellent hair. He goes through many rough and tough situations in order to find the “treasure” he seeks throughout the movie. Separated from his wife because he has little funds, him and his friends Pete Hogwallop, Tommy Johnson, and Delmar O'Donnel find money in the music industry as the “Soggy Bottom Boys” creating hits during their adventures. Everett uses his words and wit in order to get through anything he can.
He also is very clumsy with his words and mistakenly begins to change his ideas by saying, “No, no, no, it 's round now. Man will discover this in centuries to come. And he will also find that the world is merely a tiny speck in the universe.” (Reitherman). Nonetheless, Merlin values Arthur
Ray Bradbury in “The Pedestrian” uses various literary devices to achieve Mr. Meads character development. Bradbury uses simile, characterization, and imagery to develop the character of Mr. Mead so that the reader can understand his motives for being alone. Bradbury uses simile to develop why Mr. Mead is alone. He first uses simile to show how he is alone. "Only his shadow of a hawk in mid-country."
Realistically, Arthur knows this will probably end horribly, but he also can’t help himself. The stranger from a week or so ago, who he now knew to be Francis, had requested another meeting - a first date. The Brit was a little skeptical.

War Changes Molarity Tim O’Brien is both the author of the novel The things they carried, and one of the most important characters. Tim O’Brien narrator and some might say the protagonist. O’Brien seems to be really confused throughout the novel. He has some guilt that he tries to deal with over and over again throughout the novel, but when the war is over he uses his ability to tell stories to help him deal with his guilt and confusion. O’Brien might have been a character that abides the moral code but after entering the Vietnam war, morality never seemed to exist.
In Le Morte d’ Arthur, Arthur displays loyalty and caring. He is a great king and has many noble knights who are willing to give their lives to fight for him. Arthur shows how much he cares for his knights when he says, ‘“Alas!...that the day should come when I see all my noble knights destroyed! I would prefer myself had fallen’”

The first of which being that each character has a very unserious way of looking at their situations, cracking jokes and making fun of what might be going on. The other reason is that each character has such amusing quirks to them, such as a president who acts like a buffoon and a thief, a man who gets into trouble because he wants to write a book, and the previously mentioned chronically depressed
Arthur had spent too long suppressing that secret part of himself. The reason he had no close friends, the reason his brothers hated him; the reason he cut himself off from society, the reason even his country's armed services refused to accept him. He had learnt from his past mistakes, and knew better than to see his own secret wishes and desires where actually there was nothing. But then, what was it about this bloody Yank?
