The Negative Effects Of Artificial Intelligence

In the article “Is Google making us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr, Carr proposes that technology is causing a negative effect on our brain. Carr believes that since he’s been on the internet a lot more in the past decade he notices that his mind can’t focus on books or essays anymore. Even bloggers, that Carr follows, are coming up with the same conclusion. Since internet access is so quick it’s changing how our minds work and that we are becoming depended on the internet for everything. Carr goes on to say how he thinks that as long as we rely on computers mediate our understanding of the world that our own intelligence will become mixed into artificial intelligence.

With all the information we consume in a short amount of time Carr says we are acting like computers as he puts to paper saying “as we come to rely on computers to mediate our understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence” (580). This one again like all the other points is very evident in my life as I see it happen in the school system itself. The school system teaches us to memorize so many things and learn as much as we possibly can in my classes today memorization is key and without it I struggle in class, so learning as much as possible seems to me to be like the role of computers and not for humans. Computers supply us with every bit of information we need and with this power comes the want to be like it, so the school system and culture in general wants us to become like computers, knowing everything that will be useful to us at any given moment and this is taking away our ability to act as humans. Technology has been evolving over time and so has our way of thinking and understanding. It is affecting the way we think, read, write, and live because it is all around us. In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” the author Nicholas Carr, a well known writer, discussed his very own opinion about how technology affects the person’s way of thinking, reading, and writing. The articles discuss the same topic in a unique way but sway in view points. For example in the article “Rise of the Machines' is Not a Likely Future” Littman suggest that technology is not here to over take us and going to take over he suggest that AI is still in the work and has room to improve but we should use it to improve society.

Artificial Intelligence and its effect on the workforce Artificial intelligence(AI) is a recent reality of technological advancement affecting human society. To analyze its effect on the workforce we will look back in history for technological disruptions and how they affected the workforce and compare and contrast to the way AI is currently impacting and will continue impacting the human workforce and other aspects of human society such as economics, politics and the general environment. Technology could help people adapt in ways that could help them change the way they live and think. In “Smarter than You Think”, Clive Thompson claims that technology can help humans be smarter. Technology such as computers to mentally challenge themselves, so they can improve. Thompson talks about how playing a computer in any sort of game like chess could be a game changer for humans to help them improve their performance and overcome their mistakes.

Defining intelligence is a very difficult proposition and one which Alan Turing attempted to avoid answering as regards machine intelligence in the Imitation Game which has become known as the Turing Test (Turing, 1950). He posed the question “Can machines think?” which is he developed to ask if machines are able to converse in a way that can persuade humans they too are human. A machine is declared to have passed the test if human judges are unable to tell the difference between a human and a computer through a typed conversation. Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: Literature Review The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, authored by Nick Bostrom and Eliezer Yudkowsky, as a draft for the Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence, introduces five (5) topics of discussion in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ethics, including, short term AI ethical issues, AI safety challenges, moral status of AI, how to conduct ethical assessment of AI, and super-intelligent Artificial Intelligence issues or, what happens when AI becomes much more intelligent than humans, but without ethical constraints?
