Social and physical environments in the home and the social environment in the classroom impact early childhood development. This paper discusses: the impact of the social environment in the home on early childhood development; the possible negative impact of the physical environment on a preschool child in a Guyanese home; and the impact of a positive social environment in the early childhood classroom.
Early childhood development is“a set of concepts, principles, and facts that explain, describe and account for the processes involved in change from immature to mature status and functioning.” (Katz, 1996, p. 7)
The physical environment refers to; the nature of the physical home surroundings including its cleanliness; the safety of the home and the security which the home offers.
“Human social environments encompass the immediate physical surroundings, social relationships, and cultural milieus within which defined groups of people function and interact (Casper & Barnett, 2001, para. 3).
The impact of the social environment in the home on early childhood development
Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory encompasses the view that values, beliefs, skills and traditions are transmitted from one generation to the next. He, unlike behaviorist theorists, emphasized that family, social interaction, and play are primary influences in a child’s life (Gordon & Browne, 2013). According to research home environment during children’s first three years can lead to poorer language development by age three. Later behavior problems, aggression, anxiety and depression, impaired cognitive development at age three. In the long-term effects the child may just stop school right after receiving a high school diploma and teen parenthood.
Where children live and the way they are brought up by their parents/carers has an effect on whom they are as a person and how they will develop. For instance if parents are rich or poor, live in good or bad housing, if they are capable loving carers or struggle with parenthood and/or their own (mental) health, or if there is abuse or lack of interest in the family unit, all these circumstances will make a difference to a child’s life and their physical and emotional health might be affected by these different scenarios. A child’s family and their home should be their safe haven and if it is not, then it can have a serious affect on them emotionally. Some children might be negatively affected by situations in their live and they might be in need of help but unable to ask for- or obtain it, for instance respite care to help caring for a sick parent.
Having attachment figure present during daycare can play an important role, as children develops a greater emotional knowledge. A study by Pons et al (2004) supports this point “the relationships that children build with their peers and other supporting roles can affect their academic achievements” This suggests that a child gaining emotional knowledge plays an a key part of how they are evaluated and accepted by their peers this comes from 4 of the nine components of emotional knowledge which are; recognition, external cause,desire and reminder Daycare can have a positive effect on a child’s development of peer relationships through letting children negotiate learning and allowing the emotional knowledge which will strengthen throughout their lifetime.
There are many aspects of society that can be compared when doing an analysis of three cultures: socio-economic statuses, occupations, fertility rates, diets, religions, economics, and politics are few among many. Education, and particularly early childhood education, is a fascinating topic to study when conducting a comparison because it has elements of all traits and greatly mirrors the values of the culture of that which it is present, “Preschools are sites where a variety of domains, interests, and social actors intersect. Preschool is where child rearing meets education; where the world of parents and home first meets the world of teachers and school” (Tobin, Hsueh, & Karasawa, 2009, p. 2). The key factors that provide a supportive speech, language and communication environments are – The physical environment is very important when creating a safe and secure setting that can support each child’s or young person’s individual learning needs and development to the best of their ability. The roles and responsibilities of staff is that we should all understand our own roles and others carrying them out to the best of our abilities within the setting. in my setting at Grove Primary School, we make sure we can provide children and young people with their own key worker and they will have set activities and resources where their key worker will work alongside the child or group of children.
Chapter nine of beginnings and Beyond starts with what an environment is. The environment is what surrounds the child and the people in it. It is where children play. The recent studies found by the society for neuroscience has found that the home environment predicts frontal and temporal cortical thickness and young adult brains. And children who have parents trained in stress reduction and attention have improved memory development.
My annotated bibliography consists of 4 sources related to the Child Development major. Child development degree programs appeal to students who wish to pursue careers that make a difference in the lives of children. Students learn everything about children's physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth from infancy until adolescence, and how they develop within their surrounding social contexts. Students gain a clear understanding of social and behavioral sciences, the theories, major research findings, and research methods fundamental to the field of child development.

Socialization is evident in the texts by Harry Gracey and Barbara Kingsolver. Both texts shed light on the basis of how the Western educational system operates their functions. Gracey’s text explains that from the prime age of four to five, most parents start their children’s education(s) in kindergarten. Gracey states kindergarten “is thought of as a year in which small children, five or six years old, are prepared socially and emotionally for the academic learning which will take place” (Larocque, 2015). A common misconception people make is believing kindergarten is a preparation year for children rather than forming the student role.
Vygotsky (1962, cited in Wilson et al., 2011) explained in his theory of sociocultural theory by arguing that, children build knowledge through social and cultural experiences. Piaget, on the contrary, argued that children gain knowledge through exploration and activities. I observed the teacher demonstrating how to add water to some potted flowers using a small watering can while the child observed. The teacher demonstrated this by interacted with the child using language and hand gestures. The teacher promotes the social interaction through values, customs, belief and language to promote the child’s learning.
Being exposed to age related peers is good for his social development. It has been shown that, “When parents and children can access local community institutions (e.g. libraries, medical facilities) and social agencies (e.g. to receive income entitlements) children’s achievement can be enhanced beyond the level which schools alone can accomplish” (Fred Biddulph, 2003). Studies have shown that the environment and people in it is very important for healthy development.
Children look to their parent’s guidance and development. Parents are the first example and if the family environment is not healthy, the children could be subjected to a lacking strong physical development. “Effective parenting skills are fundamental to child development” (The Chief Public Health Officer 's Report, 2008). Children learn from their environment, if a child’s parent is not in the picture, children will learn from what surrounds them. For example, Genie did not speak because she was never spoken to as a child.
Early Childhood Education : Role of Technology Abstract Early childhood education (ECE) is a type of educational program which relates to the teaching of young children in their preschool years. It consists of many activities and experiences designed to assist in the cognitive and social development of preschoolers before they start elementary school. In most early childhood programs and schools, technology will be part of the learning background of the future. To make sure this new technology is used effectively, we must assure that teachers are fully trained and supported.
