The Similarities And Differences Between The Chesapeake And New England Colonies

In the early 1600’s British settlers colonized the east coast of North America forming a total of 13 colonies. These arising colonies began to grow and evolve into different societies despite being from the same region beforehand. One of the reasons that led to distinct separation among regions was social disjunctions. Others significant reasons include various economic incentives and political stance as well as religious motives. With varying social, economic, and religious disjunctions, the New England and Chesapeake regions both evolved into two distinct societies by the start of the 18’th century.

The individuals from the Virginia Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony came to the new country for both very similar reasons, the main reason being so that they could have freedom within their colonies and to be free from the church and practice their own religion. The puritans and the pilgrims from the Netherlands but they wanted their children to keep the English traditions. The fishing and hunting conditions were not good in this area. Some colonists traded American Indians corn for beaver fur.

Early American colonies were the base of what it is now known the United States of America. Although almost all of the colonies were from the same time period each colony differed from each other. Some of the colonies differed by their economic system and also by their way of running their colony, their government. Also, the colonies differed from their culture and their way they lived. In addition, the New England and the Chesapeake colonies were not the exception they also differed from each other.

What is life without relationships? Well, wouldn’t everyone like to know. Relationships can be formed in many different ways and the relationships don’t always turn out positive. Some of the biggest relationships turn out negative, that is just how history played out. In this paper two different relationships will be shaped during the colonial times.

When I hear the term “New England,” I automatically picture a beautiful land that was filled with natives and Europeans who worked together. I picture Europeans who supported each other. I also picture colonists who were free from all persecutions for their religion. I saw them as people who understood and accepted outsiders unlike the Chesapeake colonies. Prior to reading the textbook, I knew that the colony in Massachusetts was home to the first Puritans.

Amid the late 16th century and into the 17th century, European nations quickly inhabited the new lands called the Americas. England sent out multiple groups to two regions in the eastern coast of North America. Those areas were called the Chesapeake and the New England locations. Later, in the end of the1700 's, these two locations would combine to create one nation. However originally both areas had very different and distinctive identities.

The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.

New England colonies had a hot/humid climate so they weren’t able to do any farming like the southern colonies. The New England colonies did not have slaves, this is a big difference between the two and many slaves form the southern colonies would try to escape to the New England colonies since slaving wasn’t allowed there. Both the Chesapeake colonies and the New England colonies were vital to Britain’s atlantic trade. They both had large populations and booming economies. However, they both eventually established their own cultures that were different from each other. The colonies’ differing beliefs, environments, and labor lead to the contrasting cultures. The New England Colonies were a Puritanical society, who preached against excess.

The early Virginia and New England colonies differed politically, socially, and economically due to the situations that the settlers faced. Throughout many of the letters written about some of the experiences of the earlier settlers, one can easily see a major difference in the way of life of the two colonies. Although many of these colonies differed in the way of life, each colony faced some similar things that they each had to overcome. These challenges made a massive difference in the way that each of the colonies started out and directly influenced the future for both colonies. When these challenges are faced, many of the settlers will create the foundations of their political, social, and economic systems.

Whilst Chesapeake’s economy was based off of tobacco and sugar plantations. The geography of the land also had to do with the economy because in the Chesapeake Bay, the land was fertile and there was plenty of land to be used for plantations while in New England the land was rocky leading the settlers to look for other means of wealth. Even though both regions had wealth, New England was more inclined towards serving God than richness (Doc E). Thirteen colonies and a handful of brave people was the start of what would eventually become one of the most powerful nations in the world. That statement is why it is important to study the development of the early colonies in America. There were three main regions of British-controlled colonies called the Chesapeake, New England, and Middle Atlantic regions. There is much to learn by looking at the similarities and differences of these regions. The colonies of New England, the Chesapeake, Middle Atlantic regions had differences such as values, groups of people, and health status; however, they also had some similarities such as the people living there had been pushed and pulled from Old England.
