Kaden Kroslak Professor Stumpf English Composition II 12 January 2023 Reading Response 1 – Zanesville Massacre by Chris Jones The Zanesville Massacre story written by Chris Jones was an incredible story that brings elements of mystery, surprise, and emotion into a real-life event. The story takes place at the property of Terry Thompson, of which was located in Zanesville, Ohio. Terry Thompson had dozens of exotic animals on the property including tigers, lions, bears, monkeys, and more; all of which he took care of. One day after being released from prison, his neighbor got a strange feeling about Terry’s property when horses began racing and a lion was brushed up against the fence line between their properties.

The Columbine shooting is known as to be one of the worst school shootings that has ever happened in history. This shooting took place in a little town in Colorado called Littleton. The two shooters were Eric Harris, and Dylan Klebold and they decided to start a school shooting on April 20,1999, and decided they were going to shoot up the whole school with guns, and bombs. Thirteen people were shot, and killed by the two shooters.

On December 14th, 2012, the lives of thousands, and indirectly millions changed after the shooting of twenty children and six teachers were fatally shot by the infamous Sandy Hook Elementary school shooter, Adam Lanza. This event was so dramatic and sickening the world stopped in it’s tracks waiting for what was going to happen next. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the cauldron was stirred and the underlying question resurfaced; What should we do about gun control laws? Should the people of America even have guns? After a number of shootings occurring and Sandy Hook occurring, Barrack Obama addressed the event and spoke about “reducing gun violence” and promoting “gun safety” drawing many citizens to support his cause.

The state and region that individuals live in greatly determine their opinions on how gun control and amendment application should be interpreted. A study was done 4 months after the sandy hook mass shooting where children were killed, the study determined the belief of gun control after this tragedy. The researcher Kevin H. Wozniak found that, “ [only] a slim majority of Americans favors a semiautomatic weapon ban and proposals to make gun control laws stricter,” (Wozniak 2). Even directly after a mass shooting there is only a slim majority on a weapons ban. This makes it clear that the beliefs of guns in American culture are too deeply rooted and the county has become too dependant on them.

The 26 Lives that Changed America On December 14th, 2012 the United States of America broadcasted the third deadliest massacre by one man alone of 26 lives. (Wikipedia) Bullets rang through the halls of Sandy Hook Elementary School that morning, murdering 20 children and 6 adults. Each child had a name, a family, and a future they never got to fulfil. During the aftermath of the Sandy Hook massacre, parents were terrified of the possibility their kid could be next.

When debating the wisdom of the Constitution’s Second Amendment, the media tends to start from the presumption that the question is purely scientific, and that the answers can — and should — be derived from statistical analyses and relentless experimentation. This approach is mistaken. The right of the people to keep and bear arms is not the product of the latest research fads or exquisitely tortured “data journalism,” but a natural extension of the Lockean principles on which this country was founded. It must be protected as such. The Declaration of Independence presumes that all men enjoy certain inalienable rights, among them “life” and “liberty.”

Columbine High School Massacre and How it Impacted Public Security “Do you believe in God?” This was the last thing Rachel Scott, a recently born-again Christian, had heard before telling Eric Harris yes and then being shot to death at point blank range. This quote is from the infamous Columbine High School mass shooting in Littleton, Colorado. This incident caused much outrage and questioning from many parents and students about the safety of their well-being while in school. The concerns quickly leaked into the minds of US citizens, as nobody felt safe anywhere in public after the tragedy.

The Columbine Shooting was an unforeseen tragic event that transpired on April 20, 1999. The shooting was labeled as a massacre that devastated not only the city of Columbine, but the state of Colorado and the whole nation. It is these types of tragic scenarios that make society question the security of the school, and the ease of obtaining guns in the United States. Two senior students, Eric Harris (18) and Dylan Klebold (17) found to be the only two perpetrators during the massacre.

How would you react to a school shooting? Most people’s first reaction would be terrified and worried. Most would question why someone would do something like that. Columbine High School was one of the biggest high school shootings. Two teenage boys by the names Dylan and Eric were the ones responsible for the massacre.

Many people who read the article would be familiar with Columbine, the movie theater in Aurora, or some of the other university shootings that have occurred. By using those examples it shows that Goldberg researched the events that took place, and shares the experience of victims or family members to the reader. The events that occurred at every location imply that gun free zones are not completely free of those who want to commit a crime. In Goldberg’s statement, “There is no proof to support the idea that concealed carry permit holders create more violence in society than would otherwise occur,” (Goldberg 74) He makes an informed opinion on conceal carry permit holders.

Solutions can be made to help the problems with death by guns in the United States, this in term may fix the problems with the second amendment. One solution that may help the situation of the second amendment is the accessibility to certain guns .Many mass shootings include military-style weapons ,such as assault rifles, which are more powerful than normal guns and prove to be highly lethal. In an article by Infobase Learning called "Assault Weapons: Should the government restrict access to assault weapons?" done in 2016 it talks about what happened in the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting it states, “...20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people, including 20 children aged 6 and 7, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, before killing himself. Earlier in the day, Lanza had killed his mother, a gun enthusiast, and taken several of her assault weapons, which he used in his rampage.”

The question on whether the 2nd Amendment in the U.S. should be changed or not has become a widely discussed and argued topic as of recent, due to recurring incidents of shootings occurring on U.S. soil by its own inhabitants. While many would be in support of the right to bear arms, including myself, I do believe that the current gun laws need to be made more restrictive than they are in their current state, for the sake of the country and the safety of its people. I’m well aware that I am not a U.S. citizen and that I have no say in what decisions are made there regarding the country’s constitution, but I feel that what I have to say is shared by many of America’s people and that it’s not only Americans that are affected by guns but also those who are visiting the country from abroad. There are many problems regarding America’s very unrestrictive gun laws at present, whether it’s the fact that there is no federal minimum age for possession of a long gun, or the fact that individuals don’t

While Novak does not necessarily appear to support any side of the gun control argument, he does imply that Republicans have largely derailed efforts to enforce the law regarding gun violence cases. The writer’s main purpose for writing the article is to show that there is a different way of looking at the gun control debate and to also show the wrongs, in his opinion, that are committed by the interested parties in this debate. Novak takes the risk of appearing subjective in his article which can make him appear less professional. As a journalist, he is supposed to appear

The Gun Control Debate In recent years, there’s not many topics on the political spectrum that aren’t absolutely polarizing. This essay will attempt to show each side’s generalized opinions, and find flaws in each of their arguments, as every ethical argument has flaws. Analyzing each side will help anyone understand their own opinions better, because without the demonization of the opposite party, ethics get much more difficult.
