An Analysis of the Theme in Bradbury’s
“A Sound of Thunder” In most short narratives, the author creates an underlying message or cautionary tone on a specific issue. This recurring subject throughout any literary work is the theme. Throughout “A Sound of Thunder”, a science fiction short story written by Ray Bradbury, the author addresses the issue of nature preservation with the plot of two characters, Eckels and Travis, entering a time machine to hunt a Tyrannosaurus Rex. After embarking on the time travel journey, a series of impromptu events lead Eckels to negatively alter the future. Because Eckels was reckless and did not pay attention to his behavior, the results of an influential election

The path symbolizes the preservation of nature and stepping off of it represents destroying it. Travis warns Eckels multiple times throughout the plot to “never step off” of the path because affecting the past in any way could lead to unknown consequences in the future (Bradbury, 141). This shows that humans are afraid of the unknown, especially when it involves the state of nature that surrounds them. Travis’s constant warnings foreshadow the possibility of Eckels making an incorrect step off the path and causing future events to change. Because an uncareful step is such a small action, Bradbury is addressing the fact that the small, unfriendly environmental actions that humans make are actually important. One might not even think of their action having a related effect, but it ultimately always does. Bradbury’s use of the Path and its associated rules in his story suggests that if humans are not careful with their actions, they can alter nature's future for the …show more content…
Time Safari Inc., the company that allows Eckels to travel back in time, appears to understand the dangerous ripple effect of changing the past. The company blatantly warns that they do not guarantee clients to return from safaris alive, demonstrating that they themselves cannot promise a certain outcome. Eckels also signs a waiver stating that Time Safari Inc. is not responsible for any personal damage or death to clients, and he agrees to obey his safari guide with exactness before entering the time machine. However, there are penalties already set in place in case a safarist steps off the path or disobeys orders. This shows that even though the company believes they can safely control the past and future, there is always room for chance and unforeseen risks. When Eckels makes it back to his present time period of 2055, he discovers that his accidental trip off of the Path led him to step on a butterfly. This miniscule action caused an influential election to be altered unfavorably. Bradbury describes the dead butterfly as “a small thing that could upset balances and knock down a line of small dominoes and then big dominoes and then gigantic dominoes” (p. 146). One can interpret this analogy of falling dominoes as the impossibility of predicting the outcomes of small actions. Dominos fall quickly and lead to a greater and greater end product. However, others can
The main message of “A Sound of Thunder” is tiny actions could have big consequences and effects. For example, the story says, “His body screamed in silence in return. Beyond this room, beyond this wall, beyond this man who was not quite the same seated at this desk…’Not a little thing like that! Not a butterfly!’” (Bradbury 299).
He comes to understand that the destruction of the old world was largely caused by humans mindlessly using destructive technology, and that the ruins of the old world still hold dangerous secrets that could harm the living. According to the text, "Very great they were, and wonderful and broken—broken in the time of the Great Burning when the fire fell out of the sky" (Benet 39). This event caused widespread destruction and is attributed to the use of harmful technology. Similarly, in "A Sound of Thunder," the time travelers are warned not to make any changes to the past, as even the smallest changes could have devastating consequences on the future. Eckels killing of the butterfly is shown to have impacting effects.
When Eckels asks why, Mr Travis states, “We don’t want to change the Future.” Later then in the story Eckel steps off the path without realizing Mr Travis is mad he exclaims, “We guarantee no one leaves the Path. He left it. Oh, the fool.” Eckle then says, “I haven’t done anything, I just ran off the path a little.”
In Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" and Gloria Skurzynski's "Nethergrave," both authors tour conceptions of time travel and its consequences. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that "A Sound of Thunder" is the superior of the two texts due to its well-developed characters, complex plot, and effective writing style. One reason for this is the deeper level of character development present in "A Sound of Thunder. " The protagonist, Eckels, is depicted as a, nervous, indecisive, brave, curious and courageous beyond measure, but he is far from admirable because his of his selfish and impulsive ways, who's fear of the unknown leads him to make a fateful mistake. This internal conflict adds layers to his character and makes him more relatable to the reader.

The main theme of “A Sound of Thunder” is that little things can have a big effect. This is shown in the story when the tour guide says, “you, friend, have stepped on all the tigers in that region. By stepping on one single mouse” (291). This shows how the little things in life even though they might not have an effect immediately can cause many things to change and so it is important to make sure you're making the right choices in order to not cause long-lasting effects. However, the theme of “Nethergrave'' is don’t believe everything that you are told.
In "A Sound of Thunder," Ray Bradbury's figurative language and diction convey the various aspects of time travel. Eckels's dialogue predicts the downward spiral of human intuition. Furthermore, Eckels is constantly
Critical Essay: The Sound of Thunder vs Nethergrave The Sound of Thunder by Bradbury and the Nethergrave by Skurzynski were to different stories written by two outstanding authors. Both books go into depth about how scientific technology have so much influence in changing lives of individuals and the people around them. These to compelling stories are different but yet so some similarities that will keep you interested. In the Sound of Thunder, we are introduced to a guy name Eckels who has to deal with the consequences which he brought on himself when he decided to try a new technological that he wasn’t really ready for.
In the short story, “A sound of Thunder”, Ray Bradbury used figurative language to make a bigger impact on the story. When Eckels goes into the office he sees and hears, “... A sound like a gigantic bonfire burning all of Time, all the years and all the parchment calendars- all the hours piled high and set aflame.” The author, Ray Bradbury, wanted his audience to have a specific image set in the audience’s head. By using a simile he help the reader imagine how Eckle’s is going to get to the past.
The theme of Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" is enhanced by his use of foreshadowing throughout the story. The story follows a man named Eckles on his journey to the past on a hunt for a real dinosaur. As the events in the past unfold, Eckles ultimately alters the future forever by taking a small step off the Path. The path is there to make sure the time travelers do not affect the future. Unfortunately, Eckles learns the true consequences of his actions when he returns to a changed future.
Although when they return to the future and it has changed, they learn that Eckles had killed a butterfly. By killing something so small, and seemingly pointless, the whole future was different and the consequences were irreversible. The path in the setting was meant to prevent any changes in the future from occurring, but by stepping off it, it created the overall theme of the story. The Setting of “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury impacts the story tremendously.
For example, he uses futuristic ideas, imagery, and most of all suspense. Suspense is used throughout many of his short stories like “A Sound of Thunder”, “The Pedestrian”, and “The Veldt”. In the story “A Sound of Thunder” the literary element being used throughout the story is suspense. In this story, a group of people are going in a Time Travel Safari to hunt for a T-Rex.
