Although Thomas Edison is most often accredited with the invention of the electric light bulb, he did not actually invent it. More precisely, he invented the “first commercially practical incandescent light”(Boundless). Edison and his team at Menlo Park, his laboratory located in New Jersey produced a light bulb with a carbon filament by October of 1879 that lasted over fourteen hours. After years of working, Edison unveiled his light bulb at Menlo Park on New Year’s Eve of 1879(Lighting a Revolution). However, Edison was not the only person working on an incandescent light bulb at the time.

The Transcontinental Railroad made traveling more efficient and made a boom in the railroad market. The first incandescent light bulb was made by inventor Thomas Alva Edison in 1879. This was a huge scientific breakthrough for the future of electricity. People no longer had to use dangerous gaslights that could easily cause fires. Edison had created something scientists had been struggling with for years and finally made a long lasting, affordable light source.

Throughout history, there have been individuals that have greatly altered the course of the United States, such as Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Era, Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War with the emancipation of slaves, or maybe even Henry Ford and his cars during the Industrial Revolution. Even though there are influential politicians and businessmen that exist in the United States, many influential American scientists exist as well, such as Albert Einstein and Alexander Graham Bell. Despite there being many influential and important scientists throughout the United States’ history, Thomas Edison is the most influential and important scientist thanks to his inventions that have revolutionized many modern industries: music, movies, and most importantly, electricity. Thomas Alva Edison is often considered one of the best inventors of all time and has had a massive impact on modern life despite his work being much over one hundred years old.

He invented the universal stock printer and he perfected the lightbulb. Thomas Alva Edison was born February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He was born the youngest of seven siblings to Samuel and Nancy Edison. His father was an political activist from Canada, and his mother was an excellent school teacher and she was one of the biggest influences in Thomas’s life. When Thomas was seven his family packed up and moved to Port Huron, Michigan.

Thomas Edison helped invent over 1000 inventions, some of which include the camera and the microphone, but Edison’s largest success in life was the recreation of the light bulb, in 1879 when he discovered that a carbon filament inside an oxygen-free bulb could glow (Science for Kids). Significance: The most obvious significance of the recreation of the electric light bulb is that people now had easy access to a light to use after the sun went down.

From the birth of the nation, technology has been an instrumental component in shaping the social and economical aspects, modernizing society to be more efficient, convenient, and privileged. After the success of this product, Edison built a laboratory and factory in nearby Newark, New Jersey. There he made improvements to the telegraph along with other popular inventions at the time.

Edison also invented lots more like a mimeograph is a type of copying machine. Edison also discovered the movement of electrons in a vacuum. Thomas Edison made 1,000 inventions before he died. Edison left a drawing on his assistant’s desk.

Generally in sound history the well-known Thomas Edison was believed to be the first person to record sound and scientific notions held that statement for quite some time. Whist in the process of trying to make a recorder for telegraph signals, Edison noticed that indented paper would create signals when a needle was pulled of them. He perfected that principle and made a machine that scratched a sheet of tinfoil and on playback he could hear his voice when the playback needle retraced the scratched surface. (Mileham, RR 2009) Although history states Thomas Edison did create the machine called the phonograph, he was indeed not the first person to record sound.
