Alan Gratz’s book, Refugee, is about 3 unique stories having different characters, plot, setting and time. Despite those differences, there is one that all stories share throughout the whole book, the conflict. The conflict of the story is when a problem arises to the protagonist because of the antagonists. There are 3 main types of this, character vs self, character vs nature and last but not least character vs society. Character vs society is when the protagonist is opposing the society such as when Josef, a refugee, was against the Cuban government, when Isabel was against the Bahamian law and when Mahmoud, another refugee, was against the Hungarian soldiers. Which is why the most prominent conflict in Refugee is character vs society because …show more content…
Louis and Josef could not get into Cuba as the Cuban government declined them. In the text, Captain Shrouder had said that he had just gone to see President Bru so that they could disembark but instead of accepting them, he said that they must leave the harbor by tomorrow. In addition, this relates to the main argument as it shows how Captain Shrouder actually went to negotiate with the president but he rejected them, proving how Josef was not allowed into Cuba. The protagonist, the refugees, are opposing the Cuban government, the antagonist, making the government the society and the refugees the characters. Furthermore, the text also stated that Officer Pedron said that Evelyn and Renata could leave because they had the “right” papers, papers being visas. Again, this connects to the main argument because it shows why Josef and the refugees could not leave while Evelyn and Renata could, that reason being that they had the right “papers'' or legal documents. In support of this, it shows that character vs society is the most prominent conflict because Officer Pedron, the society, is clearly lying about needing the legal documents as refugees also have the so called, “legal documents.” Thus, Josef’s story demonstrated many reasons why character vs society is the most prominent
The Universal Refugee Some people believe that Universal Refugees are different people that deal with different hassles. However, that is not true. The Universal Refugees understand each other and deal with the same struggles such as immigration, hardship and assimilation. When entering a new country, refugees most likely will deal with hardship from just entering the country to actually living in it.
"Every Secret of a writer's soul, every experience of their life, every quality of their mind, is written large in his works" quote by Virginia Woolf. Alan Gratz is one of the writers that makes sure to put his soul in every book he writes. In the book "Refugee” by Alan Gratz, he uses point of view, characterization, and suspense to make his writing more interesting because they all help keep the vast book engaging and more interesting. One of Gratz’s techniques is his use of point of view to help the readers know what the main characters are thinking at all times in the book which helps readers be more engaged. To start off, Isabel’s best friends name is Ivan and they have been close since they were very young and when they were on the boat
The main idea, or theme, of the novel, is to stay gold, don’t get into trouble. Being rude is not a solution to get through life. In literature, there are five main types of conflict, or problems, Man vs. Self, Man vs. Man, Man vs. Society, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs. Destiny. In this essay, I will prove that all these types of conflict can be found in
One of the similarities these refugees had in common was that their presidents were dictators. Episode 4: "Mariel Boatlift: The Tide Turns" states that, “Tejero says the moment he spoke those words came to the retribution. Cuba, like Haiti, was a one-party country. If you went against the revolutionary government, you were put on a blacklist” (32). Shows that in Cuba there was a dictatorship, and none was able to say otherwise.
Conflict in a story can make or break a story in many ways. There are also some many different types of conflict but they are broken down into internal and external conflicts. A lot of the best story have the best conflicts for example. In the crucible by aruthur miller and Ethan Frome by Edith Aaron both have different different types of conflict but both the thrive off their conflicts.
Atoning for Their Actions Regret, guilt, heartbreak, atonement–what do any of these ideas have in common? Some refugees experience feelings based on obstacles they encounter on their journeys to safety. Alan Gratz exhibits the sacrifice some refugees made and the guilt some may have felt. In this novel several characters atone for earlier actions, while some never get to. First, in Josef's story, Ruthie wants to pay forward her brother's sacrifice.
Ayush Tiwari Red Group May 31, 2023 Respond to Conflict Have you ever read a book in which the characters are put in a position of pure suffering? Would you want to know how they survive? In the book Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz, characters such as Yanek have to face many different conflicts all of which are responded to in different ways. The first conflict that happened was when Yanek faced a scary situation when an officer pounded on his family's door and his mother didn't open it.
The lives of refugees are turned “inside out” out when they are forced to flee because they have to leave the only home they have ever known and try to figure out a way to leave their old lives behind. They are not leaving their country because they want to but because they are forced to and it can feel like
Conflict happens when a character experiences some type of fight or dispute. Conflict can be internal or external, and generally makes for a more interesting story and a much more enjoyable experience for the reader. The conflict in Borders by Thomas King is the most important element of the story, as the conflict between Laetitia 's mother and the security at the Canada-United States
The characters in the story are involved in fights and other violent activities. This theme is still relatable today, as violence continues to be a problem in many communities. The book shows how violence can have serious consequences and how it’s important to find peaceful ways to resolve conflicts. The novel also discusses the issue of family.

In this part in particular, De La Fuente utilizes figures and solid facts to prove his claims, especially with his effective use of census records to show black flight from Cuba due to lack of opportunity (pg. 104). Speaking to social mobility and education, De La Fuente identifies the mediocrity of Cuban and American efforts to create a literate population. Although the government made significant strides to educate the populations, imperialist motivations fueled the system, which lacked secondary systems of support and training for Afro-Cubans. It is essential that De La Fuente identifies lack of labor opportunities and education in Cuba because both Afro-Cubans and white Cubans could eventually find solidarity in combatting these issues. Upon reading this chapter, De La Fuente’s revelation of a cyclical nature in Cuba with revolution and racism is uncovered.
An example of one of the conflicts presented is man vs society. To introduce, the main character Anita is living in a compound with her family in the Dominican Republic. The country is ran by the dictator, El Jefe, or as some others refer to him as “Mr. Smith.” Most families disagree with his policies
Conflict can be described as the struggle between two opposing forces, whether the forces being person vs person, person vs self or person vs society. Good examples of conflict can be found in almost any book. Margaret Atwood’s novel, the Handmaid’s Tale is a source of all three types of conflicts. The Handmaid’s Tale is about a society where females are given specific duties and are restricted from reading, writing, talking to others and looking at themselves in mirrors. The protagonist, Offred whom is also the narrator in the novel faces conflicts with herself, with other people, and the society that she lives in.
Conflict is the essence of any literary fiction. The main goal of an author is to tell a story that keeps the reader interested. At the story’s core, conflict is the momentum of happening and change and is crucial on all levels for delivering information and building characterization as well as building the story itself. Conflict is the source of change that engages a reader and keeps them interested. In a story, conflict and action does what description and telling of feelings and situations do not.
