The book I chose to read was a nonfiction book titled Cut by Patricia McCormick, published by Scholastic in October 2000. Patricia McCormick tells about a young 15 year old girl named Callie. Callie dealt with personal problems that included her brother’s deadly asthma, her parents, who were growing farther apart each day, and then to top it all off she cut herself. She knew not to cut too deep and not cut more than one or two lines per arm, what she was dealing with was “reasons” for cutting. She had no idea why she cut herself until she was sent to a mental health hospital by the name of Sea Pines.

The book follows a group of boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island and left to fend for themselves. As time passes, the boys become more savage and violent, eventually turning on each other in a battle for power. This theme is further explored through the character of Jack, who becomes increasingly authoritarian and manipulative, ultimately leading to the death of several of his peers. The novel suggests that without the constraints of society, humans are prone to violence and destruction.

First, Percival Wemys Madison forgot his own name that was previously so important to him. I found this heartbreaking in a way because it shows how each of the boys has lost something dear to them. Percival lost his name, Jack lost his empathy, and Ralph lost his friends Piggy and Simon. Just pages before this passage Ralph is being brutally chased through the forest with the intentions of being killed. The savages are not longer acting like humans until all of a sudden they are all standing together on the beach by the officer.

The book details their daily lives, work, relationships, etc. In a parallel narrative, Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, the murderers, are heading towards their home with the intent to kill them all; even with the lack of a clear motive. Perry, in sharp contrast with Dick, is less enthusiastic about the crime. Losing a loved one is a challenging obstacle for many people to overcome. Sometimes the feeling resulting from losing a loved one can only be overcome through spending time with current loved ones. In the short story “The Leap,” written by Louise Erdrich, the mother, Anna, experiences the loss of many people close to her, and must keep her living loved ones closer in order to cope. Erdrich portrays this by utilizing flashbacks throughout the story to demonstrate how Anna has coped with her past trauma through interactions with her remaining loved ones over the years. pg. 216 -Mikey Holloman. The significance of this quote shows you that when you do something wrong and unchangeable, like shooting someone you will feel a horrible amount of regret and guilt. You are never able to get someone's life back once you take it away from them. Also my quote shows that once you make an unchangeable decision like shooting someone, you will distance yourself from socializing and the people that you truly love because when you make a regrettable decision, you just can't be completely normal and act like nothing happened, that's a really difficult thing to do.

The boys in the book start out fine, and civilized just like the people in the beginning of the experiment. Gradually both groups of boys and ¨prisoners¨ start to become more dark, and less human. They both make great examples of how your surroundings change the way you behave. It shows how even when there is the opportunity to become evil, there are still good souls who stay the same.

The settings of a family which has a negative effect on family and boys. Mainly what the characters are inclined to do against each other, the dysfunctional family life and the one parent family. The story has increased my knowledge about gangs and the impact on boys, that positivity of one person is better than the adversity of a gang. The author Scott Monk message to boys is being in a gang, especially a criminal gang is a futile, it is informative in regards that boys can do positive things in their life, that the need to turn their back on gangs and violence.
