John Adams is known in history for his self centeredness and stubborn headedness. As the second president of The United States, John Adams was not very popular among the American citizens for the bills he passed and the way he treated wars. However, John Adams will still be known as one of the great founding fathers of this nation. John Adams grew up in what is now Quincy, Massachusetts. Most of John Adams’ presidency was consumed with the French revolution and “Quasi-War”. The French revolution was when the citizens of France wanted the de-Christianization of their nation. This lead to the execution of the King and Queen and many aristocrats. Problems arose for America when British joined the coalition against France. The British also thought that the US should stop trading with France. Many believed that a war would start with Britain, but John Adams thought war would be disastrous. Adams instead sent John Jay over to Britain to secure an alliance via a peace treaty. However, France saw this as America joining the fight against them, and they fought …show more content…
He accomplished this by asking Congress to appropriate funds for defensive measures. These included the growth of the Navy, improvement of coastal defenses army, and authority for the President to summon up to 80,000 militiamen to active duty. Congress then passed the Alien and Sedition Acts. These acts stopped anyone from publicly disapproving of the government, and also allowed the government to stop immigration from foreign countries and kick out immigrants they saw as a threat. John Adams reluctantly signed these acts, and he became very unpopular due to this. There was some bloodshed between American vessels and French vessels on the ocean and this became known as the Quasi-War crisis. A lot of Americans wanted a full blown war with France, to save Great Britain and end the French revolution. John Adams, however, was against war and wanted to resolve the issue peacefully, if possible. In the winter of 1799, France was finally willing to negotiate openly with Americans, and America and France signed the Treaty of Mortefontaine, which ended the Quasi-War
• When Adams became president, the dispute with France carried over. The French looked at Jay’s Treaty as an American attempt to help the British in the war with France. To punish the U.S., the French took American ships that carried cargo to Brittan. During the fall of 1797, Adams sent a delegation to France with the hopes to end the dispute. The French foreign master wouldn’t meet with the Americans and instead demanded a bribe and loan from the Americans.
During the war between France and Britain in 1793, the U.S. decided to remain neutral. However, the Jay’s Treaty is what infuriates the French government. After the U.S. and Britain signed the treaty and recognized Britain as the most favored nation trading status, the French became annoyed and seized U.S. merchant ships. They also refused to receive Charles Cotesworth Pinckney from George Washington as a minister to France. After John Adams became president in 1797, he sends John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry along with Charles to restore peace from France.
As president, John Adams had big shoes to fill. He served as George Washington’s vice president for both terms. The people loved Washington, but they were not as familiar with the man who came after him. Adams preferred to be a quiet leader instead of an attention seeker. Some historians believe his most trusted advisor was his wife, Abigail.
Many people know the name, “Sam Adams”, and associate it with a brewing company. However, this is not the same Sam Adams that was famous during the American Revolutionary War. Sam Adams was the most important member of the Sons of Liberty since he showed a great amount of patriotism.
Another reason why the Quasi War started was because of the French thought the United States was going on Britain’s side. Ghey strongly disliked this because they thought the United States was neutral. After the Jay Treaty the French began seizing United States
The XYZ Affair and Quasi War Post-revolutionary America struggled to find a place in a rapidly changing world. Leaders worked to preserve peace and unity between the states and other countries. John Adams once exclaimed that if he were chosen to run the nation, he would never move aggressively against France without a necessary cause. (DeConde 3) Two years later, the French had captured hundreds of helpless American merchant vessels.

The French Revolution brought fighting between Austria and France, until French armies drove back the Austrian invaders, and France was self-declared a republic. Violence in France started the Reign of Terror, during which Hamilton’s federalists spoke of the evil of the revolution, blaming Democratic-Republicans for supporting the outbreak of violence in France. Jefferson and his people disagreed and felt that the price of a few thousand soldiers was a cheap one to pay for freedom. This comes to prove how the French Revolution brought the division between the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans even further. Another event in this time that would bring a negative impact of american politics would be the War of 1812 which resulted from the Embargo Act.
One example is when America and Britain had conflicts. Britain, in refusal to show respect for America, began impressing American soldiers and keeping trade posts, as shown in the Map of American Posts Held By British After 1783, on American territory. Jay’s Treaty was a feeble attempt at resolving British-American relations, but it did not stop the British or help America a significant amount. This is shown in James Madison’s Criticism of Jay’s Treaty where he criticised Jay’s Treaty for pandering too much to the British and not standing up for America. In addition, during Adams's presidency there was an undeclared naval war between America and France.
