John Brown said before being hung,“(I) Never intended murder, treason, or destruction of property or the excite or incite the slave to rebellion or make insurrection.” During 1857, John Brown, an abolitionist, was raising money to help abolish slavery in the South, also to get an uprising of the slaves and to create a rebellion. The main plan of the raid was to get the slaves to join his rebellion, but it failed as a raid. Even though it failed as a raid it created a greater divide between the North and South. The last words of Brown were given to a guard before his hanging and those words were, “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.” As John Brown hinted at bloodshed …show more content…
A detailed storyline of John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry is needed in order to understand the sectionalism between the North and the South. The John Brown’s Raid sparked the war due to the fact that it created a great deal of sectionalism between the North and the South. The raid lasted for 36 hours and the consequences of the raid lasted longer than expected, even after Brown died (“John Brown’s Raid”). In order to get to Harper’s Ferry, Brown was required to change his name due to him being known as an abolitionist so he changed his name to Isaac Smith. Also to produce a more convincing disguise, he was driven to rent out a farm and that he was New York. Whenever Brown when into town, he never went in large groups seeing as it would raise suspicion (A Volcano beneath the Snow). John Brown believed that the usage of violence will end slavery. The plan that …show more content…
One cause of sectionalism is the South’s reaction to the Raid. When Brown is mentioned in the South many either fear him or have a hatred for him. When they found out that he was hung many Southerners cheered and rejoiced that a tyrant was taken down. The Southerners viewed him as a terrorist to the South and ruined everything that they worked for with this simple
Treason, the act betraying one’s country or attempt to overthrow the government. John Brown did no such thing as a peaceful approach would gain nothing. Document B: Last Meeting Between Frederick Douglass and John Brown; Although the plan to attack a Federal Arsenal was “a measure to be fatal” according to Frederick Douglass. Despite the fact of taking the peculiar measures to end slavery, Brown still went through with his plans. When Brown and his men were either killed or captured people had mixed thoughts and feelings toward them.
In 1741 a series of thirteen fires broke out in the streets of New York as part of a conspiracy plot for slaves to gain their freedom back. An investigation by the supreme court looked into the matter, what resulted in over one hundred slaves being captured and interrogated and in fear for their lives they used scapegoats to try and save themselves what only fuelled the fire of the witch hunt for those who were actually responsible. The Negro plot of 1741 was an example of a witch hunt because it caused mass hysteria within the white community and also because the slaves convicted of being a part of the conspiracy used scapegoats to try and save their own lives. One of the reasons The Negro Plot of 1741 is considered a witch hunt is because during the investigation of the fires, white people in the community were afraid that the slaves were trying to fight back in order to gain their freedom back, which caused a lot of negative emotions to stir within the community causing vigilantes to take the law into their own hands. Soon A discontented Spanish Negro came under strong suspicion on April 6, when four new fires broke out and the cry of “ Take up the Spanish Negros “( Linder ) echoed the streets of New York.
I agree that how John brown cast his whole vote In Harper's ferry. John Brown was certainly considered insane, a murderer, conspirer etc. But today he was a face of a revolution, a martyr for a bigger cause, or even a nice kidnapper. In my opinion, he cast his whole vote a little differently than he should of, but he did not personally kill anyone. I would not consider this civil disobedience because they were shooting at people and holding them at gunpoint.
In my opinion during the 1800’s, John Brown was considered a hero. He was raised in a religious household and fought for what he believed in, which was all men should be treated equal. Brown was born in Connecticut, but was raised in Ohio and learned early-on in life to hate slavery. His upbringing gave him the courage to develop a plan to create an army that would arm slaves with weapons with would eventually end slavery. His goal was to attract slaves as he moved along to the Appalachian Mountains, until slavery could no longer support the system of bondage.
John Brown was an abolitionist who was a part of the anti-slavery movement. He led the Harpers Ferry Raid in hopes to ignite a spark in slave uprisings. Brown was not insane for his plans of raiding and supplying slaves with guns from the arsenal. The plan for the raid was not a spontaneous attack.
Brown specifically objected that the people who joined him in the raid were not close friends or even acquaintances. Mr. Brown did not know the team members well and had no knowledge of their intentions, he condemned their actions. A second reason why John Brown is not misguided nor a fanatic is the positive message he sent to slaves. His master plan for the raid was to have the slaves follow in his footsteps, as stated
In "'Unflinching': The Day John Brown was Hanged for His Raid on Harpers Ferry" from Washington Post, Brown explains that John Brown had led a slave revolt in Virginia which had lead to his execution. Brown was an abolitionist who was strongly religious. In this rebellion, Brown and the other slaves had murdered civilians and also raided Harper’s Ferry. On execution day, two of the guards watching him and they wrote letters to their wives about Brown’s last moments alive.
While William Lloyd Garrison described John Brown’s actions as misguided and wild, John Brown was turned into a martyr in the North. The South were enraged by it all, and entered a brief time of fear of slave insurrection, similar to the reaction of Nat Turner’s rebellion. After realizing that no slaves had joined John Brown, southerners were relieved and felt like their claims that slaves were happy were confirmed. John Brown’s raid ultimately ended up enraging southerners and emboldened their pro-slavery way of life, along with inspiring northerners to join the abolitionist movement. Although much less impactful than the Civil War itself, John Brown’s attempted slave revolt, along with an abundance of other factors, helped lead the nation into breaking out in Civil War about eighteen months
Brown chose violence which caused more harm than help. He made a plan to raise an army of escaped slaves to fight for their freedom. The thing he forgot to think about was how before when enslaved people used violence to justify their freedom, their lives became much more cruel. The plan in my opinion wasn’t thought through well enough to be able to establish anything. Therefore Brown was in total setting the enslaved people up for more violent treatments then at the time.
John Brown shows his violence in multiple raids for example, in John Brown’s Violent Rebellion t-chart where it states, “In 1859, John Brown, with 18 to 20 other people, attack the armory at Harpers Ferry”(John Brown T chart). John Brown chose to take a violent and aggressive manner of handling his viewpoint of slavery. When he attacks Harpers Ferry he had the plan of acquiring more weapons for him and his group in order to advance in the fight against slavery. His violence led to the death of many who did believe in slavery as well as the death of many who were opposed as they would go out and risk their lives to end slavery. John Brown gave others against slavery the power and will to take action and fight against the act of slavery as his and his sons’ bravery proved be one of the major points of injustice that led to the gruesome Civil War and
This is showing that instead of using his representatives to help free slaves in Congress, but instead he used violence. Then John Brown went to a proslavery town October 16, 1859 and killed five settlers with twenty-one men with him on another raid. The raids John Brown went on was an act of terrorism.
He killed many of the raiders and captured Brown. Furthermore, John Brown was placed on trial for treason and was ultimately hanged on December 2nd, 1859. (Boyer. “On the Brink of War”). Right before Brown’s execution, he handed his guard a slip that read, “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.”
Brown knew he was not going to get a peaceful answer, and knew that people were going to die. “No matter how bad the crime of slavery is killing innocent people if they get in the way, or simply killing in general is no way to solve a problem.” ( John Brown guilty or innocent slavery 2 ). John Brown says his mission is to free the slaves, but he kills one African American during the raid. “John Brown kills a black man who was either just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or he was the gate guard for the storehouse.
John Brown's raid, while viewed as a failure, was a big success for the North in their fight against slavery. While he didn't manage to do much damage before getting caught and executed, it was the symbolism that lasted after his death that made an impact. He was viewed as a martyr by the North, and it began the notion that violence was needed to achieve
On the night of October 16, 1859, he and his followers, five of whom were African-American, attacked the lightly guarded supply depot, in Harper’s Ferry Virginia, where the supplies and weapons he wanted were being stored. The arsenal was easily taken. Then, Brown’s men moved to some nearby plantations. They freed about 30 slaves, who were brought back to the arsenal. The alarm went out and the United States troops arrived at the scene the next day.
