Why Was John Brown Considered A Hero?

Looking at what he has fought for, it’s no doubt that he fought for a noble cause which is the freedom of slavery. John Brown shouldn’t be known as hero or terrorists because of want he has done applies to both sides. John Brown shouldn’t be known as a terrorist or a national hero because of his violent attack and raids. After, September 11, 2001 John Brown has been called a terrorist which has caused controversy about Brown’s legacy and reputation. Furthermore, in the article, The 9/11 of 1859 says, “He led 21 men all but two in their 20s, and many of them radicalized by guerilla fighting in Bleeding Kansas, the abolitionists’ Afghanistan”(Horowitz).

John Brown was an American abolitionist who helped sparked hatred between the North and South. He was born Charles Town, Virginia ( now in west Virginia ). During his early years John moved to many places with his family, and struggled to support his family by taking on many jobs. In 1859, John finally settled in North Elba, New york.

Because of the evil acts and unjust laws that were made against the slaves by the American nation, John Brown is considered a hero. He was against slavery since he was a child, he fought against discrimination and oppression of slavery, he freed many slaves, and he gave them lands even though he was bankrupt. In addition, because of his religion he believed everyone should be loved and cared for. Therefore, the incident of Harpers Ferry in Kansas was because of his idea of universal freedom. He considered slave owners evil and so he came to the solution of killing them for their sin of slavery and offering them no sympathy for they did the same to their slaves.

He saw the wrong in owning slaves. He believed what he was doing and what he believed in was right not wrong. He was hung with the pleasure of knowing he made an impact on the world. John Brown tried very hard to do anything to please god and free slaves.

If they had slaves to begin with, that is already evil, and he killed people for that. So if the citizens were truly innocent in the first place, they would not have died because Brown did not kill people that had no slaves. So the statement that was previously stated was invalid. In conclusion, John Brown was a hero because he was not fighting for his personal wishes, he was fighting for justice, and he knew there was a chance of death.

His actions of killing those farmers who owned slaves and freeing the slaves agitated the slaving traders and owners, and in turn this led to the occurrence of the civil war between the anti-slavers and the slave owners. Therefore, this individual played the role of inciter and mobilizing agent for the anti-slave states to join in the fight for freedom of the black people.

Brown’s actions were similar to the Civil War itself, in that both of the events were violent and horrific in terms of human loss, while at the same time being fought for honourable reasons and resulting in good outcomes. This man truly did do “more in dying, than 100 men would in living.” This debate over John Brown has lasted over 150 years, simply because he is so difficult to put in a box - if we label him as a hero, we must accept that the use of violence can sometimes be justified, and that heroes can use terrorist tactics; and yet on the other hand, if we call him a terrorist, we devalue the importance of fighting for what is right.
