Why Is Althea Gibson Called The First African American

There are lots of astonishing, significant figures for mathematics and science when you look back in history. However, during my research, Mae Jemison stood out. Jemison is widely known throughout the world as the first African-American woman to go up into space. This was a major accomplishment, and it changed the course of history.

The leader I choose was Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou was an African American Civil Rights activist, Author, & poet who issued 7 autobiographies 3 essay books and various poetry books, and had done a number of plays. Pauli Murray Creating a trail for racial and gender equality in a time where women, especially black women were seen as woefully inferior, Pauli Murray was an educator, poet, and a women’s right advocate. Anna Pauline Murray was a strong women who didn’t take no for an answer. She chose to be called Pauli Murray and was born on November 20, 1910. Lena Horne Lena Horne was a rising actress in the time period of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Like many other actresses at the time, her career had many twists and turns, but she soon proved herself as a distinguished Hollywood star. Yet, there are a couple differences in Lena’s experience compared to that of her peers like Ava Gardner and Judy Garland. Lena was a light skinned African American who refused to play the role of servants, prostitutes, or “bumblingly idiots” typically given to black actors, which made it difficult to find jobs, but caused her to forge her own path and radicalize the industry for people of color.

Sally Ride America’s Space Girl 57% of all women are in the fields of science. (Mattern 8). Sally Ride, the first American female astronaut, intrigued women of all ages to become engineers, doctors, science teachers, and so much more. Men used to be the only people to tackle careers in this field. However, Ride changed the world when she became the first American woman in space.

Rosa parks follows another woman, Claudette Colvin.
