Martel (2002:19) quotes “I know zoos are no longer in people good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both”. Through this quote the reader notice that there are aspects related between zoology and religion in Life of Pi. In the beginning of the novel we are introduced to zoology and religion. The author make it clear to the reader that Pi had majors in both subjects zoology and religion and later use that knowledge to help him do things one can say is impossible.
“Zoology is defined as the scientific study of animals (YourDictionary)”. Zoology has always been a very big factor throughout Pi’s childhood as he grew up with a father who ran a zoo. Pi was awarded for being the best student in zoology and because of his excellence and the knowledge he had about Zoology he was able to help his father in the zoo. Pi’s father realized that he Pi was interested in knowing a very dangerous wild animal called Richard Parker

Yann Martel used thirst as an important element throughout the book. It is also linked to the tiger’s original name. Pi is not physical or mentally thirsty for water but rather for the spirit of God. Through Pi’s thirst for God’s spirit Yann Martel creates a link to the Bible and Pi as the savior, Christ died in a hard way but only complained about being thirsty. Yann Martel compares Christ’s suffering with the suffering of Pi on the lifeboat with no water. With that aspects being compared the reader can already estimate the future conditions that there will be a positive outcome of Pi’s tragic journey just like there was with Christ. Pi could not let his fear for the tiger stand in his way of being alive. If he would have allowed that, that would have caused him to get scared, lose his concentration and becoming vulnerable to the tiger. Deep down he knew there was a living God that will help and guide
Sense after reading "life of Pi" Pi is a teenager born in India and at the same time believing in Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. His father runs a zoo, so he knows the habits of animals. Frankly speaking, the beginning of this story is not attractive, mixed with a religious belief in a teenager's growth experience. Then the story officially entered into the "fantasy draft". Pi family take boat to move to Canada with their animals, Pi's father wanted to bring the animals to a foreign country in order to sell a good price.
After this, Pi describes the killing of the cook/hyena surprisingly easy, this is the shadow self and survival instincts shining through as well. what does this say about pi? Has this changed him? Go into more depth, this seems a little rushed. Concluding
Jack Hanna is one of the most distinguished zoologists to ever work in the field. Jungle Jack is an expert who has been working with animals his entire life, ever since he was a young boy growing up on the family farm in Tennessee. His purpose in writing his autobiography was to educate people about animals, and ultimately, generate interest in their conservation, both at the zoo and in the wild. Throughout the book, one can see that Jack Hanna’s vocation is his passion for animals. Not only has Jungle Jack dedicated his life to raising awareness and conserving animals for future generations, but he also supports humanitarian efforts to teach people to preserve their environment.
Life of Pi is a movie about Pi, a shipwreck survivor, and his epic journey of discovery and faith. It is based on Yann Martel’s novel with the same name, and the movie, directed by Ang Lee, makes use of magical realism to convey many themes related to life and spirituality. Many significant symbols are also used to showcase the characteristics of magical realism. In particular, water and the carnivorous island were two important symbols that represented the theme of spirituality in Life of Pi.
This quote from Life of Pi in chapter 24 I believe is an example of a literary device called foreshadowing. In this quote spoken by Pi, it is able to describe the events to come in the novel. It deals with the truth and his imagination. However it is up to the reader to decide what is truly certain and what is made up from his imagination. It is important to the novel because it relates to religion where the whole theme of the novel is focused on.
Pi alludes to Cain after killing a living creature for the first time. In the Bible, Cain kills his brother, Abel, because of jealousy. In this passage, Pi is comparing his killing of the fish to Cain killing Abel. This allusion and comparison shows that Pi has very high morals. He believes that killing a fish is like killing a human being.
I think the meaning behind Pi’s reply, “so it is with God.” is that a life is better with some kind of believe than one without because Pi’s original story with the animals in less tragic and horrific in comparison to Pi’s second story. For an example, on page 309, Pi has to witness his mother be stabbed to death and then later beheaded by the brute-like cook, “He killed her. The cook killed my mother….He caught her by the wrist and twisted it. SHe shrieked and fell.
Throughout the beginning of Pi’s life, he is told not to kill any animal due to his vegetarian values. However, in this scenario, he has no choice. Through this, Pi transforms into a
Zoos and can be places where the imagination and creativity of people, especially children, can come alive and inspire them to tread avenues that they never expected they would take. In the early years of my childhood, I spent many hours observing and studying wild animal exhibits in zoos in Seattle Washington. I would imagine myself in my dream world as zoo keeper or a veterinarian helping animals and knowing them each by name. As I studied and let my imagination run free; I knew that someday, somehow, I would be involved in the care of animals. Without the establishment of zoos and, I would have never realized my dreams and perused a career in biology and animal care.
Captivity is the condition of being imprisoned or confined. Is captivity good or is it bad? If humans were put into cages and given only enough food to keep them alive we would call it inhumane. What is the difference from doing the same with animals? The topic concerning captivity has been controversial for years.
The question of the necessity of zoos is extremely controversial nowadays. There are many people who advocate for replacing them with sanctuaries as they believe money spent on keeping wild animals captive might have been used for conserving them in wild. Others are concerned that zoos serve not only for people's pleasure but for preserving and keeping populations that otherwise would go extinct. There are sufficient arguments for both points of view, expressed in various articles that are dedicated to the significant topic. “Do elephants belong in zoos?” by Jeffrey P. Cohn and “Eight reasons why zoos are good for conservation” by James Borrell are the examples of such articles.
In the movie, Life of Pi, the main character Pi Patel makes convincing arguments for the existence of God through both natural religion and revealed religion. His argument is that God exists because that is the better story. The plot of the movie is Pi telling an author his life story, including his religious experiences before, and after the shipwreck. In this essay, I will argue that Pi makes a stronger argument for the existence of God through natural religion.
He is unable to understand why the Lord isn’t listening to his prayers and why everything is detrimental to him. Keeping his religious beliefs at sea is very challenging for Pi, this leads him to experience feelings of disbelief towards God. Despite his doubts, Pi continues to pray and practice his religions. He eventually comes to the conclusion that once everything is taken away from him and he is in complete darkness, he will always have his faith. He admits that loving God is difficult, but it’s something he must do if he is to survive his journey across the ocean.
In essence, for everyday survival, it 's often better to maintain the important boundary between animals and humans, but through Pi 's story and relationship with Richard Parker, Martel shows us that staying open to what connects humans and animals, and all creatures, can provide an equally important key for staying alive. The Life of Pi, emphasizes the intensity of a predator-prey relationship, and it also reminds humans of their inner animal: we can all be dangerous to our fellow creatures. However, despite this, all animals have the potential and even a desire to connect beyond mere survival, looking for companionship and empathy across species
Zoos have been around since the eighteenth century. A zoo is defined as a compound where wild animals are kept for viewing and studying. The purpose of a zoo is mainly for education and protection, preserving animal species that are either at a risk of becoming extinct or for increased collection size (Jamieson). Animals from around the world have been enclosed in an area where we can admire and study these fine creatures. However, many modern zoos around the world have introduced animal shows, petting and feeding sessions to attract more visitors in order to earn more money.
