18th Century Native American Settlers

To begin with, the 15th and 16th centuries mark the commencement of European colonization and the integration of American and European culture. Countless Europeans and American Indians were influenced by one another, throughout the Columbian Exchange. Granted, the Native Americans suffered immensely, but there are more importantly numerous significant advantages to be noticed because of European migration. The Columbian Exchange led to the introduction of various products and sources of food, the merging of different groups of people, and transformations in American government and economy. Without the combination of European and American Indian culture, life today would be incredibly less progressive and different.

Native Americans have been stereotyped for centuries, and will still be, due to how pop culture portrays them. It may seem odd, that one would see an Indian at a salon, or playing football at first, but it is a transaction to the integration into American culture. Indians have for the most part, been treated as second class citizens, and were boosted to become more “white”. They were used by scammers, represented in early moving pictures as savage men and traded around by recruiters. Although these unfortunate detours happened to Native Americans, it paved a path for further development.

Problems of British Settlers in Early 17th Century Going to another country or land always means to explore or advent. By viewing the new world can open people’s mind, especially for people who remain in the same place for a long time. Because of the advanced technology and the development of the map, British people started to explore America in the early 17th. However, starvation during the winters, no central authority, and low quantity of the population were some of the major issues British settlers had when they tried to settle at the beginning. Without a central authority would be hard to settle and build up the foundation of civilization in a new land.

The whites came upon the land and right off started a relationship with many Indian tribes of trade. The Shawnee were one of those tribes. The Shawnee would hunt more game to relieve them of their hide, and trade the hide off to the settlers for manufactured products. This cycle started out ok. Over the years the trade actually placed the Shawnee into debt with the settlers.

In the late 1600’s, many European settlers arrived in North America in hopes of escaping the hardships they faced back home. America initially promised colonists the wealth, religious freedom, and escape from oppression they desired. New England was home to dense forests, and hills which was not optimal for crop growth. Therefore, the colonists directed their attention towards trade and commerce. The people in this region were devoutly religious and believed in the education of children.

Natives in the American Revolution.    In 1776, A revolutionary battle took place in order to protect Indian lands from colonists that were trying to steal Indian lands. In this colonial battle, not only white people who lived between India's prior the American war, revolution were involved, but also British people. Furthermore, both the British people and white people tried to gain India's tribes so they would have more advantages in winning the battle.

From colonial times until the end of the Indian Wars in 1890, the people in America went through a series of unfair and unfortunate events. Mainly for the Indians which are also called the first peoples. These events could have been handled with much more consideration for the Indians. There are many times when the Americans went too far including the Removal Act of 1830, the Reservation System, and the Act for the Government and Protection of Indians.

The Mohawk Indians were part of the Iroquois confederacy. They spoke similar languages to other tribes part of the confederacy. Their economy was based on trading goods between tribes and to the Europeans. They were settled near the Mohawk river and the Hudson. After coming in contact with the Europeans, they became one of the wealthiest tribes in the confederacy.

In the late 1500s the Native Americans of the Great Plains got an amazing new tool that would change their place in the world for 200 years. That tool would bring them great wealth and many luxuries, but at the cost of great pain and suffering. That tool they called it the great mysterious dog, we call it the horse . The Native Americans would use this tool to explore ways to transport goods and people. As well as create an opportunity to encounter and exchange with the Spanish and French through trade.

A repeated flow of immigrants provided settlers to develop communities along the Atlantic coast; pioneers pushed the expansion of the United States westward, and laborers for U.S industrialization in the North and agriculturalization in the South. Together, these immigrants built one of the most diverse nations in the world. By 1790, the U.S population primarily consisted of English, but also included Dutch, French, German, Irish, Scottish, and Spanish descent; Native Americans did not count. During the 1800s, Europe experienced a drastic decline in their population when the potato famine brought in 1,029,486 Irish and 976,072 Germans to the United States. The immigrant population continued to grow during the 1870s when people began coming

The American Revolution lasted six years and the impacts of it were everlasting(Schultz, 2010). The effects were felt by every group of people in North America and many worldwide. Even though George Washington had all of his troops vaccinated against smallpox, the colonists were not so fortunate and as a results some estimates are that as many as one hundred and thirty thousand people died from this dreaded disease. This loss of life combined with the divisions among the colonies into those loyal to Britain and those who wanted freedom would forever change the way of life for the colonists.

1. Paleo-Indians Paleo-Indians are described as the initial Americans, those who set forth the preliminaries of Native American culture. They trekked in bands of around fifteen to fifty individuals, around definite hunting terrains, establishing traditional gender roles of hunter-gatherers. It is agreed that such Paleo-Indians began inhabiting America after the final Ice Age, and that by 1300 B.C.E. human communities had expanded to the point of residing in multiple parts of North America. As these early Native Americans spread out, their sites ranged anywhere from northern Canada to Monte Verde, Chile.

Between 1870 and 1900, an estimated 25 million immigrants had made their way to the United States. This era, titled the Gilded Age, played an extremely important role in the shaping of American society. The United States saw great economic growth and social changes; however, as the name suggested, the Gilded Ages hid a profound number of problems. During this period of urbanization, the publicizing of wealth and prosperity hid the high rates of poverty, crime, and corruption. European immigrants who had come to the United States in search of jobs and new opportunities had fallen into poverty as well as poor working and living conditions.

Before the Spanish ship that changed it all, which arrived in the “New World” in 1492, thriving organized communities of native people had centuries of history on the land. That ship, skippered by Christopher Columbus, altered the course of both Native American and European history. 1492 sparked the fire of cultural diffusion in the New World which profoundly impacted the Native American peoples and the European settlers. Prior to European contact, Native Americans lived as hunter-gatherers, living and traveling in groups of typically less than 300 people. These Native Americans spoke over 400 languages and practiced a myriad of different religions (The American Pageant).

Throughout the 19th century Native Americans were treated far less than respectful by the United States’ government. This was the time when the United States wanted to expand and grow rapidly as a land, and to achieve this goal, the Native Americans were “pushed” westward. It was a memorable and tricky time in the Natives’ history, and the US government made many treatments with the Native Americans, making big changes on the Indian nation. Native Americans wanted to live peacefully with the white men, but the result of treatments and agreements was not quite peaceful. This precedent of mistreatment of minorities began with Andrew Jackson’s indian removal policies to the tribes of Oklahoma (specifically the Cherokee indians) in 1829 because of the lack of respect given to the indians during the removal laws.
