Soniyah Boun Ms. Kruse World History Honors Period 4 9/28/17 Hammurabi’s Code: Was it Just? Today’s current justice system requires police departments, court trials, and lawyers to determine right from wrong, but back in early history things were much more different. Straying away from legal court cases there was the first actual uniform set of laws to keep civilians in check called Hammurabi’s code. Four hundred centuries ago most of Mesopotamia (which was the first civilization) was under the rule of King Hammurabi who at first only had power over a limited part of the city in Babylon which was a city-state at the time.

Do you think Hammurabi’s laws were just or not? I’m going to talk about family law, property law, and personal-injury law. The most common punishment was to get your hands cut off. God’s law, the Code of Hammurabi, and Roman Law of the Twelve Tables were contributions to our law in western civilization. Hammurabi believed that the god’s, though pagan, had given him a kingship. As king, he was to administer these laws and must obey the divine laws.

Hammurabi's code and the modern laws have several similarities and differences. For example, they are both intended to maintain order in society. However, Hammurabi’s code is far more violent than modern law. Also, they have different ways of handling things, different punishments, and different social structure. One way that Hammurabi’s Code and the Modern Laws are different is because Hammurabi’s Code is strictly based on social structure.

He had a very strong nation and wanted to keep it under control. Hammurabi was primarily influential to the world because of his code of laws. His code’s consisted of two hundred and eighty two provisions, which were systematically arranged under a variety of subjects. The codes were functioned in an organized and systematic way. It was divided into groups such as family, labor, personal property, trade, real-estate, and other business.

At the beginning of the year, I was most excited to take this class because I was curious about the world, and the events that created today’s society. I wanted to know more in order to fully appreciate the world as it is today, because of all the past and history that has shaped it. I am now able to identify turning points in human history, which makes me understand the world now, and how an event that may have happened hundreds of years ago still is impacting our lives today. Most importantly, history has showed me that world will continue evolving during my lifetime, and that it is important to stay educated about current events to fully appreciate the history that is happening before my own

West of the American Revolution the rest of the continent was in deep competition. Russia, Britain, and Spain all were on the race to explore the Pacific Ocean. It was the only part of the globe that had gone untouched and unexplored by the Europeans. They feared the immensity of the Pacific Ocean and everything they did not know about it. This only makes the Native people of the pacific Islands that much more impressive as they were able to navigate those waters with much less technology and advantages that the European colonizers possessed.

I had to re-evaluate myself, as well as my career, and that is when I came across social work. As a social worker, I was going to be able to work with kids in every different type of environment, as well as impact the kids which is what I always wanted to do. As a career goal in social work for the five years following graduation would be to work in an agency where I will be most needed and most productive. As a social worker, I not only want to help children I also want to make a difference in their lives, homes, and the system in general.

History Shapes The World Everybody has a history. Everybody has experienced something that impacted them. History is what makes you, you. It shapes you.

In describing his own writings Cortazar once said “Much of what I have written falls into the category of eccentricity, because I have never admitted a clear distinction between living and writing; if in my life I have managed to disguise an only partial participation in my circumstances, I still cannot deny that eccentricity in what I write, since I write precisely because I am only half there or not there at all," (“Encyclopedia of World Biography”). By saying this, Cortazar was saying that he lived to write and wrote to live, often reflecting on his own experiences. His creative style is mirrored in that statement which seems to be in and out of reality. As quoted by the Encyclopedia of World Biography, “So much of his work fell into the realm of "magic realism," a creative literary approach dealing with humankind 's struggle to understand the world. ”(“Encyclopedia of World Biography”).

I never thought I would considered a career in social work when thinking about what I want to study in College. Over the years I have realized that I like helping people, but my thoughts of what I wanted to be were indifferent. Towards the end of senior year in high school my counselor had my class do a career survey to see what our interest were. The most common choices for me were Nursing, Teaching, or becoming a Social Worker. After that I went on the Internet and researched as much as I could on each career choice.
