Adderall is a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, central nervous system stimulants that affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to focus and other behaviors. Adderall is often prescribed to those diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD, and other brain disorders. Although the prescribed use of Adderall has helped those suffering attention deficit disorders, the recent rise in nonmedical use of Adderall has led to unfair academic advantages along with an increased pressure to use stimulants among students. Adderall is easily accessible on university campuses due to the lenient health care clinicians and the fact that one can find a person with a prescription willing to sell their pills or even give them away which has created a black market for the drug on campuses. College students are able to bypass psychiatrists and more stringent testing by going to the campus health clinic for an ADHD misdiagnosis (Stolz 2). Another factor that contributes to the demand for Adderall is money, those with a prescription not only benefit from heightening their academic performance but also have the opportunity to generate an income from the medication. Those using Adderall also enjoy an enhanced concentration in school while non-users have to do the same workload without …show more content…
The difference between users and non-users is apparent in grade distributions and exam scores because of the significant advantage given to those taking Adderall with recent studies supporting the fact
In the essay, Lamkin blames the use of these drugs on the universities and society for placing too much of an emphasis on competition and test taking abilities, and not enough on the actual education. By placing the blame on the universities and society, Lamkin is allowing the readers of this essay to relate and better understand the argument that he is making; because of the competition that many know is so great in the society that we live
This is a no brainer. The effects of a drug could apply to anyone; not just the mentally

Adderall is a prescription medication that is given to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Parents tend to think their kid has a problem from moving around a lot, playing when their parents want them to sit or acting up in school, such as choosing to not listen to directions when given, talking too much or playing in line. There’s a slight difference in
Studies show a “…range from 7.1% to 29% among adults, 5.3% to 55% among college students, and 1.7% to 4.5% among adolescents” (Weyandt et al. 20). The abuse of Adderall and other ‘study drugs’ e.g.
According to the 2013 National College Health Assessment study, almost half of students surveyed stated they felt overwhelmed with anxiety in the last year (Novotney, 2014). These numbers continue to rise among high school students and college students around the country. It’s no question why the percentage of Adderall use among college students is also rising. Adderall is a drug commonly prescribed to treat ADHD and its symptoms; however, its use among students without the ailment is rising. The drug heightens students’ motivation, focus, and concentration (Student Health, 2016).
When OxyContin went off the market in 2012, a new drug came to raise, Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a potent, fast acting, synthetic pain killer; its potency is 100 times greater than morphine and about 50 times greater than heroin (FISCHER, 2016). It was marketed to cancer patients and those In severe chronic pain. Fentanyl was created by a company called Insys Therapeutics, INC. This drug is beginning to take Canada by storm, with its potency overdoses and deaths are happening across the country, it is almost impossible to turn of the news without the mention of this drug.
The lack of knowledge concerning the effects Adderall has on one’s health and the misuse of the drug has led many students to believe that there are no negative side effects of the drug. The negative effects of Adderall on the human body outweigh the positive effects that are better known by college students. Ninety-five percent of the articles in media reports “mentioned at least one possible benefit of using prescription drugs for neuro-enhancement, but only fifty-eight percent mentioned any risks or side effects” (Lakhan). Since the negative effects of Adderall are not talked about much by the media not many college students are aware of what they are taking and what could happen. Negative side effects of Adderall and drugs similar to it
Students are using these substances to help them finish a paper quickly or cram for a test. One student that was interviewed in the video, said that she found the content that she was studying while on adderall was more interesting than when she is not on the substance. Another huge point that I took away from the video is that students are faking symptoms of ADHD to get a prescription for the adderall. This is an issue because it is making it easier for students to get their hands on the drug and consume it. Also students could sell the substance and make money off of it, which is illegal and could get them into a lot of
Methamphetamine use Overview: Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that is addictive and causes serious damage Central Nervous System. Causes: Methamphetamine can influence loads of mind structures, yet the ones it influences the most are the ones that contain a substance called dopamine. The purpose behind this is that the shape, size, and substance structure of Methamphetamine and dopamine are comparable. Before I let you know more about dopamine and Methamphetamine, I would do well to let you know how nerve cells work. Your mind is comprised of billions of nerve cells (or neurons).
When school finals approach, students act in desperate ways to find solutions for mental focus on selective subjects. Fifteen percent of college students have illegally been using Adderall the past year. Adderall impacts learning in various ways, but In the long run can cause more harm than aid. It may be more or less depending on the person but a mind or body crave for drugs exists. When it comes to LSD it is one of those more on the mind addiction side. However, LSD is found to be psychologically addictive; Meaning that after taking it people miss or crave the high or experience from it, which is why they 'll keep doing the drug.
When I was in 6th grade I couldn’t focus in class or focus on really anything. I was constantly moving and had to be active or I’d start getting body shakes just to get energy out. When my parents became aware of this they were immediately concerned and took me to the doctor soon after. I was taken to a testing center where they put a weird looking red hat on my head, put some sort of gel on the top of my head and asked me a bunch of questions. The whole procedure took about an hour and by the end I was diagnosed with ADHD.
Volunteers were screened by telephone. After screening, the eligible participants and the general practitioner received a medical questionnaire for the verification of the drug usage. Once enrolled in the study, the subjects attended a training day to familiarize them with the experimental procedures. The actual testing day was one week later and included the tests Risk Taking Test Traffic (RTTT), Trailmaking A and B (TMT-A and TMT-B), Digit Symbol Substitution Task (DSST), Reaction test (RT 1,2 and 3), Determination Test (DT) and Psychomotor vigilance task(PVT).
Drug abuse also affects education in a bad way because learners are taught about how drugs affect their bodies, families and society around them. Even though learners receive this education about drugs they choose to turn a blind eye on this because they still go ahead and do drugs and once they become addicted to these drugs they end up dropping out of school. Education is negatively affected by drug abuse because the percentage of learners who abuse drugs increases as time goes by which means the percentage of school drop outs will also increase as time goes by meaning that education about drugs is pointless to the
