How can students think that taking prescription drugs used to treat ADHD is fine to do if you do not have a prescription? How is illegally taking prescription drugs “safe” to do? Some students think this, and this essay will explain the dangers of doing this, and what can be done about this issue. Our society has an issue. There are students taking Adderall, a drug that is commonly used to treat ADHD, and they think there is no problem if they take it without having a prescription for it. People are going to the hospital, they are overdosing on these medications. They get it from friends, or steal it, and they can get addicted to it. This should not happen, and something has to be done about it. There is a problem with abusing and misusing ADHD prescription drugs. People who do not have ADHD are taking some of the medications prescribed to people with ADHD. This problem can be solved by having a system for doctors to tell if someone already has a medication from another doctor, only taking medication that is prescribed to you, and noticing any unusual behavior from family members or friends. Ritalin and Adderall are medications typically prescribed to treat ADHD, and they are the top two ADHD drugs to be abused. “It’s a drug …show more content…
"We discovered that these students frame stimulant use as both physically harmless and morally acceptable," (Devon Frye, Additude Magazine). The primary way FDA works to prevent misuse and abuse is through educating patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. This often occurs through the information FDA provides to each of these groups, such as in drug labels, medication guides, and alerts. The FDA is trying to inform people of the risks and hazards, but there are still people who either don’t pay attention, or are not aware of these things. (Laurie Raymond, M.D., Physician Health
Stimulants like these are used by students because of the effects it has on the user. Adderall makes the user stay awake and feel alert and focused, this makes it the perfect drug for a college student looking to stay up all night to study. College students are the ones most commonly taking Adderall without a prescription because its effects can help students stay awake to cram for tests, Amy Laskowski in “The other side of Adderall” claims: “A fall 2007 American College Health Association study found that over 90 percent of college students felt overwhelmed by all that they had to do” (1). It is not a surprise when it comes to college students using these illegal prescription drugs to boost abilities and to study harder and longer.
Duda also quotes study statistics by the Center for Substance Abuse Research who found that Adderall was the most popular drug taken by students to increase mental performance. He then goes on to explain the health risks from the drug and legal ramifications. He uses factual information stating that Adderall is a Schedule II drug, meaning using it without a prescription or selling it are state and federal crimes and can lead to expulsion from the University. The author then concludes the article by stating that students who do not take Adderall think that a chemically enhanced ability to focus gives users an unfair
Living with ADHD, I face many obstacles in my life regarding school, work, extracurricular activities and in other aspects of my life. I was officially diagnosed with ADHD when I was in the seventh grade, but despite the diagnosis later in my life, I always experienced difficulty involving school. The main challenges I face include my homework, especially if it is an assignment I have received in advance. When it comes to working on my homework, I am never able to sit down and finish it; I am always bouncing around from subject to subject. Because of the constant bouncing around while doing my homework, the biggest problem that I face with my ADHD arises, disorganization.
The results of my research will just identify the problem and make known the extent of Adderall and stimulant abuse. Future research will be needed in three distinct directions in order to elicit a change in policies. The directions for future research are: (1) the effectiveness of stimulants on individuals without ADHD; (2) the long-term health effects of stimulant abuse in non-ADHD users; and (3) mechanisms to easily test for Adderall use in students. Research in the first field will determine if Adderall abusers are truly gaining an academic advantage over their non-abusing peers. If it is found that they are gaining an academic advantage, universities will be forced to make a change in order to preserve equality.
Some studies are mentioned in this article that support the fact that the use of this drugs are just short term, one of this studies consisted in giving a group of 600 children with focusing problems (A.D.D.) four different treatments (medication, cognitive-behavior therapy,
(Forward: The Prologue Preamble Perambulate) SERVING NO ESSAYS BEFORE THEIR TIME While demonstrably neurotic to care about wines and worry over colleges, before their time - both of which, during the writing of these initial drafts, are in my far-flung future - I can’t help myself. If I had a nickel for every time someone told me I had OCD, I’d have $39.25! However, the dispassionate diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is not so singularly simple, for example, while some excitable clinicians propose I exhibit multiple symptoms of CDO, which is almost exactly like OCD, but in alphabetical order; other more melodramatic diagnosticians advocate for a verdict of Compulsive Disorder Extreme, which is indistinguishable from OCD & CDO, but sequential - just as it should be!
There 's plenty of drugs the world may think is fine to use only because it 's given to you by a doctor. All prescribed drugs are made to help someone in some kind of way; some drugs are being issued without having the focus on how it can affect the patient in a harmful way. In most cases, these drugs are free based on the patient health insurance, which may cause some to take advantage of the treatments. In that case, both the doctor and patient should be aware of the uses, abuses and side effects of these drugs such as Adderall. Adderall is a commonly prescribed drug that is known for treating mostly kids.
Research shows that the amount of syndrome medications prescribed to kids raised forty five p.c from 2002 to 2010. Of these medicine, Adderall was the second most-prescribed medication. Sales of the drug jumped quite three,000 p.c from 2002 to 2006. In 2010 alone, the entire variety of Adderall prescriptions flat-topped eighteen million.
According to the 2013 National College Health Assessment study, almost half of students surveyed stated they felt overwhelmed with anxiety in the last year (Novotney, 2014). These numbers continue to rise among high school students and college students around the country. It’s no question why the percentage of Adderall use among college students is also rising. Adderall is a drug commonly prescribed to treat ADHD and its symptoms; however, its use among students without the ailment is rising. The drug heightens students’ motivation, focus, and concentration (Student Health, 2016).
Typically, cognitive enhancement drugs like Adderall and Ritalin are only available through prescription for those students who have been diagnosed with ADHD, the other percentage of students who who don 't have ADHD purchase these drugs from those students at street prices. There are several reasons with students buying prescription-only drugs that were not prescribed for them buy a doctor. One problem is that they are considered "controlled substances" which are illegal to use without a prescription, meaning
A percentage of the population doesn’t consider prescription drugs very dangerous because they are prescribed by doctors. Unfortunately, that's true and it is very concerning to other people who are aware of the problem. We as a community must help each other and inform each other about the effects prescription drugs have. These types of drugs develop addicts which can be treated effectively depending the type of drug they took. There are two main treatments behavioral treatment and medications.
Although students may think that these requirements are making it hard to get treatment, it is hampering the abuse of Adderall. Duke University addressed the misuse of Adderall as declaring it as academic dishonesty, essentially cheating. Instead of trying to get a prescription or use Adderall illegally, students need to learn how to do things on their
The Freshman 15 is a thought that crosses the minds of most future college students, but most say that it won’t happen to them. This fear of losing a toned body after graduating high school bothers some more than others. They realize after high school there are no longer athletics, and they’ll no longer be exercising regularly. Also, when they depart from their parents house and begin to live on their own their eating habits change.
These drugs make individuals less excitable and calmer. Many people use anti anxiety pills without any other therapy because it seems like a shortcut for them.
