Matilda also known as Mattie. A teen living in Philadelphia in the year 1793 when the horror rises. Mattie lives with her Mother Lucille, Grandfather Captain William Farnsworth Cook and her cat. Mattie is the main character in Fever 1793, and she had lot of encounters with adversity and her are some of the ways she dealt with them. The main way Mattie faced adversity that started it all was when Mattie and her grandfather got kicked out of the wagon when they were on their way to Ludington’s farm and a doctor thought that Mattie’s grandfather had the fever. They were left on the side of the road with no food no clothes and none of their suitcases and her grandfather was sick. Mattie got her grandfather over to a tree and laid him down. She saw some willow trees and one military trick was if you find a willow tree water is nearby. Mattie found some water and food for her grandfather. Even though they had food and water it was still a long way back to the next town and her grandfather was sick in hot weather. Robbers had invaded their house and grandfather said it was not like that the other day when he came. That night the robbers came again and Mattie wasn’t sure what to do so she ran for it but was grab before she could escape. The robbers tied her up and her grandfather came walking down the stairs with a musket and fired off a round. After he had shot a robber jumped on top of him and Mattie grabbed a sword and slashed the sword through the robbers back and ran out of the house and Mattie chased him. When Mattie came back her grandfather was about to die. Mattie didn’t know where to go or who to go to and that’s when she found a little girl named Nell that had lost her mother in the fever. Mattie decided to take Nell and to keep looking for her Mother or Eliza and eventually she found Eliza and found out where her mother
First Matilda’s mom gets the yellow fever so Mattie has to leave so she doesn't get the yellow fever. Matilda and her grandfather got a ride from a very nice family. They were trying to get a ride to a safe farm but then they came to a town and had to get checked for the fever.

She lives with her mom in an old apartment building after her father accidentally got shot by a member of a gang. Her dream, ever since fifth grade, is to go to college, something neither her mom, nor anyone in her building got to experience. Her mom always reminds her about college, making sure that LaVaughn, as Verna is mostly referred to in the book, knows that she doesn't have any money to pay for her to go into college, and that she has to work for it. LaVaughn sees a babysitting job open on her school bulletin board.

Mattie is making the hard decision to value her mother’s choice and not make her mother feel any worse because Mattie knows she has a complicated relationship with her mother, and has many differences with her. Mattie does not want to make her mother feel pressure because of the yellow fever sickness. Moving on towards the middle of the story, the Grandfather and Mattie decide to move out of the country, and leave the mother to rest, and get better, and Eliza to take care of the mother. However, this is no normal lottery that you might thinks of. The lottery that takes place in the town of Smallville is only done because of tradition.
It was half a days walk to the fort but once they got there she was pretty disappointed. it was only about ten rocks and a wood pole. The men where cutting down trees in the forest to build there homes only she did not know why. We use animal skin for our homes she said in her head. She hid behind a tree about a meter away from the men, and looked into the fort she stepped out and said, why are they using wood for there homes?
